Chapter 198 Li Guanqi is trying hard to remain serious (Part 1)
The morning sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, spilling into the room, which was decorated with a girlish touch.
Several carefully tended succulent plants were placed in one corner of the desk, while the corkboard was covered with sticky notes with various encouraging words written on them.
"Believe in the power of the deck!"
"Let's be full of energy today!"
"The target is the Fate Duelist!"
"Every duelist who reaches the pinnacle has a destiny-ordained draw!"
"Ahhh!"
"Go for it, Tang Xin!"
Her handwriting was delicate yet playful, with an uncontrollable madness.
Tang Xin sat at her desk. Today she wasn't wearing her team uniform, but her favorite light pink hooded sweatshirt. The sweatshirt had a cute cat pattern printed on it, which she had drawn herself as Dean Pierli.
She took a deep breath, clasped her hands together, held the pen between her palms, closed her eyes, and muttered to herself with a serious and devout expression on her face.
"Magic pen, oh magic pen, please bless me!"
"May my day go smoothly, may I know all the answers I need, and may I guess all the correct ones!"
"And another thing, your opponent absolutely has to get stuck with a bad hand! Completely and relentlessly with a bad hand! Stuck him until he's completely lost and questioning his existence!"
She paused, seemingly feeling it wasn't specific enough, then took out her deck, picked out a few cards, and began her pre-match briefing.
"Jelly and Pudding, remember to come and save me!"
"The mail carrier! Don't come!"
"And you! [Owl], you're not allowed to draw either. You two stay in the deck, you hear me!"
"Tang Xin." Yi Mi's voice came from outside the door, with a hint of a smile, "Are you all packed? Time to go."
"Coming, coming!" Tang Xin hurriedly stuffed the card deck back into the card box, then quickly tidied her slightly messy hair and hoodie in front of the mirror before running to open the door.
Immy, standing outside the door, leaned against the doorframe and looked her up and down.
"Xiaomi, are you really not going to sign up? Why not take the test? It'll be good to gain experience and try your luck," Tang Xin couldn't help but persuade her.
Today is the big day for the annual assessment of the Soul Reaper's Office. Except for a few particularly important positions, almost everyone in the fortress is on holiday.
For many ordinary people, this assessment is like a narrow bridge to change their fate. Even if they are penniless and have no cards, as long as they pass the written test, the Spirit Control Bureau will provide them with a "quota" to configure a card deck during the practical assessment stage. In theory, it is indeed possible for ordinary people to make a comeback.
"Forget about this year, I'll cheer you on from the sidelines." Immy smiled, but the smile quickly faded, and her expression turned unusually serious. "By the way, be careful today. I have a feeling... a group of people who don't seem right have arrived."
Perhaps it was Tang Xin's unintentional remark last time that "I feel sorry for puppeteers" touched her, and she unusually wanted to be friends with a living person.
"Someone who doesn't seem right?" Tang Xin's heart skipped a beat, and she frowned slightly.
“Yeah, it’s those bounty hunters from the dungeon.” Immy lowered his voice. “I don’t know who vouched for them, but they got them a batch of temporary supercomputing rings so they could sneak into the exam area.”
Tang Xin retorted instinctively, "I'm not a wanted criminal, what am I afraid of?"
“Of course you’re not,” Immy said with a playful smile. “But the myna bird you’re so fond of is.”
"His bounty is only 300,000. There are so many people at the assessment venue, and the security is so tight. How could they dare to make a move..." Tang Xin's voice trailed off, her cheeks flushing uncontrollably. She suddenly realized what she was talking about, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "What nonsense are you spouting!"
"What do you mean by 'longing for someone'..."
"Yes, yes, I didn't read it, I didn't read it." Immy dragged out her words and sighed helplessly. "Have you really been able to concentrate these past few days? You spend five minutes looking at a question and half an hour looking at someone. Your eyes are practically drooling."
"I really don't understand you."
"How could you possibly fall for a numbered citizen..."
"Stop talking!" Tang Xin couldn't take it anymore. She reached out and covered Yimi's mouth, growling with a mixture of shame and anger, "I'm going to be the woman who becomes a duelist of destiny!"
She stomped her foot forcefully and emphasized, "Men only slow down my card-drawing speed! They're a nuisance!"
Before she finished speaking, she rushed out like a gust of wind, running towards the team's base gate without looking back.
Immy watched her fleeing figure, smiled helplessly, and a trace of worry flashed in her eyes: "Living people are such a hassle."
Bianyuelong Fortress, the annual assessment point for the Juling Division.
A massive sculpture bearing the emblem of the Spirit Control Division stood in the center of the square, surrounded by a constant flow of people. Most of the examinees were young, their faces showing a mixture of tension and anticipation. Many were looking down at their phones, quickly reviewing their final study materials. Le Tong and Chu Chan, dressed in standard silver-gray combat uniforms, patrolled through the crowd, their eyes sharp, the guns at their waists and the spirit summoning devices on their wrists gleaming with metallic light.
A dozen or so intelligent mechs, each three meters tall, moved with steady steps, their mechanical eyes flashing red as they silently scanned everyone who entered the area.
Tang Xin was right. Under such vigilance, no bounty hunter would dare to take action on the spot for 30. Anyone who disrupts the examination room order is subject to the right of the Spirit Control Division agents to kill on the spot. If there is a guarantor, they will be held accountable further.
"Wow, there are so many people..." Li Guanqi was stunned by the scene before him as soon as he stepped into the square.
Several thousand people gathered in the square, their movements perfectly synchronized, still studying and reviewing their books!
It's still rolling, still rolling!
His gaze swept subtly over several inconspicuous corners at the edge of the square, where a dozen or so people dressed in worn clothes and with wary eyes were gathered in twos and threes, standing out from the excited or anxious candidates around them.
A strong aura of a "slacker" emanated from him, impossible to conceal even from a distance.
Li Guanqi thought to himself that these people were more looking for something than taking an exam.
A shifty-eyed boy met Li Guanqi's gaze. He paused for a moment, then quickly looked down at the screen of his smartphone, before looking up at Li Guanqi again, as if repeatedly confirming something. After confirming, he sidled up to a tall man and whispered a few words furtively.
The tall man followed suit, glancing at the smartphone, then looking up to carefully examine Li Guanqi, before finally whispering an instruction to a younger henchman beside him.
The younger brother understood, and cautiously scanned the surroundings to make sure no patrolling agents or mechs were paying attention before quickly walking through the crowd toward Li Guanqi.
Li Guanqi was suspicious and his gaze fell on the young man, who was in his early twenties. His gait was slick and street-smart, but he didn't carry any conspicuous weapons.
But this person's face... looks familiar.
The henchman approached Li Guanqi, stopping two steps away to indicate he meant no harm, and asked in a very low voice, "Mr. Number 0748?"
Seeing that Li Guanqi had no reaction, he continued, "We are the Black Scorpion Excavation Gang, and the brothers in the gang would like to invite you to... to plot an important matter together."
He subtly gestured with his chin toward the group of people in the corner.
"Your bounty... hehe, 300,000 gold points, not a lot, not a little, and there are quite a few hyenas watching outside."
The underling's tone carried a hint of threat, which quickly turned into a conciliatory one, "But rest assured, our Black Scorpion Gang has no interest in that little bit of money. What we value is your potential. We are seeking an... ally."
The Black Scorpion Excavation Gang? Allies? Li Guanqi sneered inwardly, but his face remained expressionless as he calmly looked at the other party.
interesting.
With more than an hour to go before the preliminary test, he wanted to see what these people were really up to.
Li Guanqi didn't speak, but nodded slightly. Then, he took a step and slowly walked to the front of the Black Scorpion Gang.
"My name is Zarug." The one-eyed leader of the Black Scorpion Gang introduced himself, with a hideous scar across his face and sharp, eagle-like eyes.
The men standing next to him followed suit, identifying themselves as such.
"Zike." The rat-like boy shrank back, looking somewhat timid.
"Mina~" The tall, beautiful woman had a slender whip wrapped around her fingers, the end of which was slightly raised.
“Gao Ge,” the muscular, towering man said in a deep voice.
“Cliff,” the street urchin said.
Zarug scrutinized Li Guanqi with his single eye, his voice low: "Number 0748?"
Li Guanqi didn't speak, but simply looked back calmly.
Zarug grinned, revealing his slightly yellowed teeth: "Don't be nervous, kid. Our Black Scorpion Gang wouldn't even look at your 300,000 gold point bounty."
He paused, his one eye sweeping over the other hunting groups, his tone tinged with disdain, "Those hyenas outside might be eyeing us, but we have bigger business to do."
Li Guanqi's eyebrows twitched almost imperceptibly: "Oh? What big deal?"
“We’re going to capture someone.” Zarug leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice as if sharing a huge secret, “You probably know him too, a guy codenamed ‘Silver City Son-in-Law’.”
Upon hearing this ID, Li Guanqi's heart skipped a beat, but his face remained calm as he said seriously, "This guy's bounty must be quite high; it's not something we little people can get our hands on."
Zarug, oblivious to his odd behavior, continued, "It is very high, however, we have received reliable intelligence that his combat strength is not high."
"There are absolutely no epic cards!"
Discovered? !
Li Guanqi's heart was in turmoil, but his face remained calm: "Then what is the purpose of your seeking me out?"
"I can't beat that guy; he's terrifyingly strong in duels."
