The Mystery of the Inner Demon

Chapter 294 Admitting a Mistake

Chapter 294 Admitting a Mistake

Wu Shanqiu seemed to be deep in thought, then clapped her hands: "Oh! That man who brushed past us, I remember him!"

Qi Fei and Wu Shanqiu appeared in the surveillance footage. However, what seemed like an ordinary event that day turned out to be much more intriguing from an outsider's perspective.

When Qi Fei and Wu Shanqiu left Ma Ziqiang's house, Wu Weiwei entered the frame, observing cautiously. She was clearly waiting for Qi Fei and Wu Shanqiu to enter the elevator so she could deliberately follow them in.

Qi Fei stared intently at the screen. When the elevator doors opened on the first floor, a man walked in. The surveillance camera clearly captured his appearance. Qi Fei's memory was correct; this man was Lin Yu.

When Lin Yu reached out and pressed the floor button, Qi Fei and Wu Shanqiu both opened their eyes wide, because he had pressed the 18th floor.

He looked somewhat uneasy, anxiously watching the floor numbers flashing on the elevator screen. After exiting the 18th floor, he turned right and headed towards Ma Ziqiang's apartment. Unfortunately, the security camera outside the elevator only captured the area where he exited the elevator. A few minutes later, Lin Yu reappeared on screen, leaving the building with his hands in his pockets, seemingly much more relaxed than before. No one knows what happened during those few minutes when he was out of the camera's view.

In the interrogation room, Song Yun silently watched the footage of Lin Yu going upstairs, then decisively shook her head: "I don't know this person."

At this point, Song Yun's denial was seen by Qi Fei as a blatant provocation.

“He went to your house!” Qi Fei said immediately.

“No one knocked on the door after you left. Maybe this person went to the wrong floor,” Song Yun said calmly. “My parents-in-law can testify to that.”

"What a coincidence, he went to your 18th floor and died a few days later?" Qi Fei stared at Song Yun's pitiful face and said coldly.

"Is he the one who fell from the building across the street?" Song Yun seemed to be hearing this for the first time.

Where were you between midnight and 4 a.m. last night?

“I’m at home, I didn’t go anywhere. Can’t you check the security footage?” Song Yun answered without hesitation. “It should be easy to find out if I went out. I went for a run around 9 p.m. last night and came home. I haven’t gone out since.”

Whether Qi Fei was being paranoid or not, she spoke with such confidence, as if she already knew that the surveillance cameras in the entire neighborhood had been blocked last night, and no one knew whether she had actually left the house or not.

Wu Shanqiu, who was standing nearby, also found it strange: "Ma Ziqiang's body is barely cold, and you still have the mood to go out for exercise?"

“Running helps me release the grief of losing Lao Ma. Staying cooped up at home makes me even sadder,” Song Yun said, but she didn’t shed a tear. She was completely different from the grieving widow she was when she was first questioned. She was unusually calm, as if she had been possessed.

Qi Fei frowned: "You're very confident that we can't possibly have anything to do with you in Ma Ziqiang and Lin Yu's deaths. Why?"

Song Yun looked directly at him: "Because I am innocent. You are a police officer, you need to provide evidence."
-
Qi Fei and Wu Shanqiu returned to Huantai Community to investigate. As they passed by the real estate agency, they met the manager who had previously helped them contact Ma Ziqiang's upstairs and downstairs neighbors.

"Officer, has the investigation into the two dead bodies in the neighborhood been completed?" His anxious manner aroused Qi Fei's suspicion. "Is this any of your business? Why are you so concerned?"

"Oh dear, it's related!" the store manager said. "Two people have died in succession in this Huantai residential area. There are rumors that the feng shui here is bad. Several sales contracts that I was about to sign have fallen through. I'm so worried!"

Qi Fei was both amused and exasperated. Before he could say anything, a familiar voice came: "Going to the police won't help with this. You have to come to me."

Qi Fei was pleasantly surprised and looked in the direction of the sound. Sure enough, it was Zhong Kui standing in the autumn sunlight. Her black hair shone brightly in the light, and she looked completely refreshed.

However, Zhong Kui looked at him with empty eyes, as if she hadn't seen anything. She deliberately walked to the store manager's side and said, "Tell the customers that I have a way to ward off evil spirits and ensure that they will have a safe and smooth life after moving."

The store manager looked at the stunning girl in front of him, completely bewildered: "Are you a feng shui master?"

Zhong Kui pursed her lips and said, "I can give you a free consultation to help you retain customers who have changed their minds. If it works, we can talk about cooperation, and the fee can be discounted." She openly discussed business with Qi Fei.

"Xiao Kui, when did you return to Nancheng?" Wu Shanqiu went up and took Zhong Kui's hand without any hesitation.

This made the store manager even more confused: "You know each other? Are you police officers?"

"Don't get me wrong, she's my girlfriend." Qi Fei grabbed Zhong Kui and said, "Sorry, she just likes to tease people, don't take it seriously."

Zhong Kui shook off Qi Fei's hand and said, "Hmph, who's your girlfriend?"

The store manager, looking on with amusement, realized it was a young couple having a tiff. He muttered, "Girls these days have quite the tempers. Speaking of which, that young man who jumped off the building mistook a girl for his girlfriend. She was so upset she almost called the police. The guy was pretty good-natured, though, and kept apologizing. He seemed like a nice person. It's such a shame he's gone."

"Tell me more details?" Qi Fei and Zhong Kui asked in unison, then looked at each other in bewilderment.

Zhong Kui angrily turned her head away and stared directly at the store manager, asking, "Do you remember what happened when they argued?"

The shop manager, probably never having been stared at so intently by such a pretty girl before, blushed instantly and stammered, "That day I was in the shop when I saw a girl walk past our door. The young man who died caught up with her in a few steps, patted her on the shoulder, and asked her when she was coming over that night. The girl asked him who he was, and he gave his name, saying that we had agreed to meet at his house that night. The girl was furious and said she didn't know him at all, calling him a pervert. Only then did the young man realize he had mistaken her for someone else and quickly apologized."

"You remember it so clearly?" Qi Fei questioned from the side.

The store manager scratched his head sheepishly: "Hehe, actually it's because that girl was really pretty, I couldn't help but take a few more glances, and that's when I saw the young man chasing after me. I was wondering what kind of new way to pick someone up was... Who knew that the next day I would see the picture of the young man who fell to his death from the 18th floor, and when I looked at it, I thought, 'Hey? Isn't that the young man from the misunderstanding...'"

"He said he made plans to meet at his place tonight?" Qi Fei frowned. "If it's not that girl, then who did he invite?"
