A brave man may not live, but he cannot die
Chapter 21 Extraordinariness, Identity, and Work.
Chapter 21 Extraordinariness, Identity, and Work.
The Chocobo pulled the cart and ran on the streets of Sivir.
This bird resembles an ostrich on Earth, but is larger, with a longer neck and a wider beak. Like the ostrich, its wings are atrophied and it cannot fly, but its legs are thicker than a horse's, and its speed is comparable to that of an ordinary horse.
The system had previously introduced Chocobos as common creatures in Tamilan, with an extremely wide distribution. While the wealthy still opted for horses, which offered greater endurance, speed, and docility, Chocobos were more versatile and easy to feed, and even after death, they could be made into meat and sold. Therefore, Chocobo carts could be found almost everywhere, making them a common means of transportation for the common people.
"A week ago, I didn't tell you much about the extraordinary people because I had to rush back to the academy to finish up your business. Have you taken down your confession?"
Quinn nodded.
"Commissioner Ankua fed me all sorts of potions, and I was in a coma afterward. When I woke up, a week had passed. I had no idea what had happened, but I had a headache and a sore bottom."
"Very good, but take away the last sentence."
"Wait, this can't really be the academy's interrogation method, right?" Quinn was horrified.
"Veritaserum? That stuff is very safe and usually doesn't cause any problems."
Ankuya said seriously as he drove, "At most it will affect the intelligence slightly, to the point of becoming mentally retarded, but it won't kill anyone."
Quinn had a black question mark on his face.
This is called "slightly"?
The speed of the Chocobo is not very fast, only ten kilometers per hour, and you can slightly feel the breeze on your face.
As the industrial and residential area of Ashwell, Xicheng District's streets aren't particularly attractive. Roads are sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, and houses are overcrowded. Stagnant water puddles along the roadside, and a faint haze hangs in the air, making the entire city seem shrouded in fog.
These are all waste gases emitted by factories.
Quinn had grown accustomed to the chemical smell that he had to get used to.
Beneath the smog, the lives of the citizens are full of vitality and prosperity, which reminds Quinn of the Indian videos he had seen. The vendor markets that thrived in the dirty and messy environment were so similar.
The vendors in the other world are much wilder, from all kinds of weird beastman restaurants, to the street dealers for people to gamble, as well as fortune tellers, magic tool sellers, and potion mixers on the street.
"I'm not a transcendent, so I can't tell you about my real experiences. What follows is some common sense."
Ankuya's voice was almost compressed into a line, and it was carried into Quinn's ears by the guidance of the wand.
Passersby around could only see the handsome driver opening his mouth constantly but could not hear what he said.
"Leaving aside the Abyssal Sequence for now, the remaining sequences can be roughly divided into two types—Clerics and Warriors."
"To become a priest, one must join the church. Advancement isn't too risky, as long as one is sufficiently devoted to the gods. However, the low risk comes with the fact that the priest's destiny doesn't depend on humans, but on the gods themselves. It depends on whether one's devotion can impress the almighty gods and allow them to grant more power."
"The reason the seven great divine religions have been able to preach for thousands of years and remain standing is because they can steadily produce extraordinary people. As long as there is a steady stream of believers joining, they can always remain strong."
"The power of the clergy is tied to the gods. For example, the White Church's clergy are better at healing. In terms of combat power, the strongest is the Gospel Destiny of the Holy See of Light, while the others have their strengths and weaknesses. Of course, there are exceptions, so it's hard to generalize. Most clergy don't appear on a daily basis. They preach in the city, either as priests or bishops, and are usually only called upon to handle special incidents."
Quinn mused, "Like that time I did?"
He nodded slightly. "As long as it's a vicious mysterious incident, you'll see the presence of a clergyman. Who the clergyman belongs to depends on whose diocese is in charge."
"As for the combat class, it is completely different from the clergy class. The risk of advancement is extremely high. If you are not careful, you will fall into madness."
Ankuya said calmly:
"But also... extremely strong."
"There's no traceable evidence of the origin of the War Class. The most mainstream view in the mystical community is that the War Class existed during the mythical era of the First Era, a reward bestowed upon humanity by the gods."
"During the Age of Cataclysm at the beginning of the Third Era, humanity, in order to continue civilization, began attempting to recreate that bounty without the gods' aid. Warriors resorted to extremes, devouring all manner of cryptic demons, performing incomplete rituals, and even desecrating the gods' corpses. Ultimately, at the cost of countless lives, they discovered a viable method."
Quinn couldn't help but feel a surge of admiration.
There were such people in his hometown.
"Knight, Ninja, Warrior, Archer, Thief, and Mystic—six combat classes, corresponding to six different fighting styles. Each contains knowledge and extraordinary powers from ancient times. Humans can ascend to combat class extraordinary powers by taking potions made from extraordinary materials and performing arcane rituals."
"Any destiny has nine sequences, and from sequence nine to sequence one it is further divided into five stages. Every time you advance in sequence, you need to take the potion and perform the ritual again. The lower the sequence number, the stronger it is."
The more Quinn listened, the more familiar it sounded.
But he just couldn't remember where he had come across similar content.
Is it a novel?
"So the pinnacle of transcendence is Sequence One?" He asked curiously, "What kind of power does a Sequence One possess? Can they fly in red shorts?"
"Close. Very close, very close, infinitely close to God."
Ankuya said roughly: "I found a teacher for you. When you become a transcendent, go and learn from him."
"Before that, you must first advance to the [Brave] Fate."
Quinn was faintly excited, the highlight was coming!
"The fate of the brave is unknown to the occult community. Most transcendents believe there are only twenty transcendent sequences, but in fact, there is a fate specially prepared for those who travel through time."
"Specially prepared for time travelers?" Quinn was slightly surprised. "There's even this kind of time travel gift package?"
"I'm afraid even the hero himself doesn't know where this sequence came from. In history, there have only been seven extraordinary people with the destiny of the hero, or maybe eight now - they are the time travelers who came to Tamilan. It is because of the existence of the destiny of the hero that the heroes of all generations can defeat the devil." There was no ripple in Ankuya's dark eyes.
Quinn shuddered after hearing this, and had an ominous feeling that some chicken soup recipe was about to begin.
"This, this, this is not appropriate to give me the fate of a hero, right?"
The emperor gave the eunuch a knife, or was it just a trick to test his loyalty?
"What are you thinking?" Ankua glanced at him, his tone full of sarcasm. "You don't think that becoming a Brave Sequence Extraordinary will pose a threat to His Majesty, do you?"
Quinn nodded and groveled, "How dare I!"
This reaction is saying "I feel".
Ankuya laughed out loud: "Oh, you really don't know anything about the history of Taimulan."
"The reason why heroes throughout history have been able to defeat the Demon King is not only because of the Order of Heroes, but also because of the unity of the human world and the help of the gods. Do you think a mere hero can kill a god? How ridiculous."
Ankua didn't talk much about this topic.
"The strength of the Hero's destiny far exceeds that of the six major combat classes, and far exceeds that of the priest class. If you want to kill a Hero, you must also be a Hero."
He gently pulled the reins, and the Chocobo turned into an alley. "The previous Demon King left behind a potion formula for the Hero Sequence. The demons have tried, but all those who took the Hero Potion died suddenly, and even their souls were corrupted into unclean things."
"Huh? Then you give me some?"
"We speculate that this potion can only be taken by the soul of a time traveler," Ankua said, smiling at him. "Of course, if you die, we will revise our speculation and state that only the 'chosen hero' can take it."
Quinn exclaimed, "What the hell!"
"Sequence Nine of the Hero's Path is called 'The Useless Person'," Ankua said.
"Useless person?"
What kind of name is this?
"And the ingredients for the potion are very simple. Just mix two parts of ashes, add some water and drink it." Looking at the road that was becoming more and more secluded and remote, Quinn felt a chill.
".Ankuya, you're not going to take me to dig graves, are you?"
"Dig up the grave?" Ankua shook his head. "Those two sets of ashes won't be that easy to get."
"What kind of ashes do you want? Human? Animal? Monster? Will eating them really not give me diarrhea?"
Wow, awesome, there is such a magic potion recipe, I will report it immediately.
Ankuya said calmly, "One for the hero, and one for the demon king."
"."
His expression was wonderful.
"Your Majesty has already prepared the Demon King's portion for you, but we're still short of the Hero's. The Demons once snatched the remains of several heroes, but I don't know what Your Majesty did with them. Now we have to find another one."
Hmm? Could it be that Ankuya doesn't know about the system?
"There were only seven heroes to begin with. Their remains are either missing or carefully guarded as treasures within the Cult. Now, there's only one we can possibly find and possibly capture—" Anqua pulled the reins, stopping the Chocobo. "That's Merlin, the founder of Grindelwald Academy and the second hero."
"We're here, get off the car."
In front of us is a pub decorated with neon tubes.
This brightly lit building was out of place with the shabby, low-lying shanties surrounding it. Many passers-by from the West were sitting at the door of the bar. They were covered in tattoos and looked at the two men warily.
Quinn whispered, "Is the Second Hero so punk that he buried the body in a place like this?"
"No, let me help you get an identity first."
The two of them had not taken a few steps forward when they were stopped by someone.
"What's the matter?" the leader asked in the Taimuran language with a strong accent from the Western Continent.
Ankuya calmly replied, "Looking for Antigone, doing business."
The leader swept a cold gaze over the two of them, and finally tilted his head slightly, indicating that they could pass.
On the second floor of the bar, they met Antigone.
This was an orc, and a short one from the Anati (Note 1) tribe. He had his raccoon tail coiled on a chair, his eyes rolling as he scanned the information handed over by Ankua.
"Help me make a household registration certificate for the Western Continent, an ID card for the city of Aknets in the Kingdom of Ron, and a passport for Ron."
"." Antigone looked up and sized up Quinn. "Are you sure you want to get a residence certificate for the Western Continent for this black-haired, black-eyed guy?"
"This has nothing to do with you." Ankuya looked completely cool and aloof with a poker face.
"Hehe, of course, as long as you pay, but..."
Antigone asked in confusion, "Is there a place called 'Litang' in the Western Continent?"
Ankuya's face was full of black lines. How the hell should I know.
Quinn smiled shyly behind him. If he had known that it would be written in the household registration book, he would have changed it to Pudong. Reborn in a Different World: I am the Master of Shanghai!
Antigone leaned back in her chair, her tail wagging cunningly.
"What level do you want to make? I have three types: fake at first glance, slightly fake, and absolutely real!"
"What's the price?" Quinn asked tentatively.
"Very cheap, a little expensive, really expensive."
"."
The orc that Ankuya found is very reliable.
After receiving a whopping price of 4 gold pounds and 8 silver coins, three certificates with Quinn's photo on them were made in less than half an hour.
The quality is 'absolutely genuine', and Qian Ankua paid for it.
After getting the documents, the two rushed to the police station building without stopping. Ankuya asked the sheriffs to issue a certificate of no criminal record to Quinn on the grounds that the investigation was completed and the suspicion was cleared, and stamped the fake certificate by the way.
Now the fake certificate became real, and Quinn was transformed from an illegal resident into a good citizen with the dual guarantee of Ron Kingdom and the sheriff.
Ankuya found a restaurant run by orcs and treated Quinn to a meal.
This was Quinn's first proper meal after arriving in this other world for nearly half a month. He had no idea what "Swift Crab Meat" was, but it was incredibly delicious, seasoned like Southeast Asian curry, and nearly brought tears to his eyes.
In the afternoon when the sun was moving towards the west, Quinn and Ankua came to a single-family house near the east city.
This is Ankuya's home.
There were no demon-related decorations in the house. Apart from cabinet after cabinet of wine, there were only piles of books and notes, leaving no place to rest.
"I originally prepared several plans of action. But since you want to become a Transcendent, you can only choose the most risky and profitable one."
He had a heavy book on his knees and was constantly scribbling something with a quill.
The cover of the book vaguely reads "Grindelwald's Exercises".
"So one of my tasks is?"
Well-fed and well-drinking, Quinn was enthusiastic about his work.
"There's only one place where I can meet two suspected heroes at the same time and get the ashes for making potions—"
"Grindelwald's Arcane Academy?" Quinn immediately followed up. He had already guessed this. "You want me to enroll as a student?"
"."
Ankuya closed the book and asked calmly, "Do you want to look in the mirror?"
Quinn stroked his prickly beard and smiled innocently, "I'm 18 this year, I just grew up a little too fast."
"My friend, you look 18 years younger than you do at 80."
"Hold."
Ankuya threw the circled exercises in front of the crying tough guy Quinn, and the thick book made a terrifying sound when it hit the ground.
"Although you can't be a student, you can be a teacher."
