Chapter 235 Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
Chapter 235 Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
The morning bell and evening drum were ringing out, and suddenly the sound of drums could be heard from the Guanyin Temple. Chenxiang got up, tidied the scriptures on the table, ignored the roadside, the black bear spirit, and the two princesses from the South Sea, and walked towards the dining hall on his own.
It's time for dinner.
"Look, he has food and drink here, and books to read. If he devotes himself to cultivation for a few years, he can attain enlightenment. So what's wrong with letting Chenxiang stay with me?"
"Black Bear, you're just being greedy," someone by the roadside said.
"Yes, I am greedy, otherwise why would I wear this restraining headband?" the black bear spirit laughed.
“I don’t want to be his teacher. I just want him to stay here and finish reading all 5,048 volumes of scriptures.”
"Is it just about reading these Mahayana scriptures?"
"You won't get more than you want; you'll have to go to the Western Paradise to see the Buddha Tathagata," the black bear spirit continued with a laugh.
“Chenxiang has not even fully comprehended one of my scriptures. It’s fine to just read it, but he can’t understand these scriptures.”
"How will you know if you don't try? Just give it a try!"
"Hey, by the way, could I borrow your scriptures to take a look?" The black bear spirit's greed was aroused again.
"You can borrow it from Chenxiang," someone by the roadside said.
"Didn't you make him addicted to reading?"
"Okay, I'll give it a try."
The black bear spirit turned and left, ignoring the roadside, as he was going to have dinner.
After mealtime, the dining hall will no longer provide food.
Eating on time is a good habit he has cultivated since he attained enlightenment.
The man by the roadside raised the black bear demon's red-tasseled, black-shafted spear and hurled it at the demon's back.
Hearing the sound of the wind, the black bear spirit turned around and caught the flying spear in his hand, while taking several steps back.
The burly man's face twitched, and he cursed under his breath.
In a Guanyin Zen temple filled with demons, the air was thick with demonic energy, and mortals dared not approach. Chenxiang was the only human in the temple.
When they ate in the vegetarian hall, it turned out that all the dishes were vegetarian. The black bear spirit had trained the little demons very well, and they no longer ate meat, but vegetarian meat.
After dinner, everyone rested, adhering to the principle of working at sunrise and resting at sunset.
"Hey, are you just going to stand there and watch?"
Outside the dormitory, by the roadside, one could see through the window that Chenxiang and the little demons were sleeping crammed together on a large communal bed.
"Of course I want to see what's going on with Chenxiang," he replied to the question from the South China Sea Princess by the roadside.
"What a coward!" the Third Princess cursed at the roadside.
"What if we just demolish his temple? This can hardly be considered a Zen temple of Guanyin Bodhisattva; it's just a monster's lair."
"Fourth Sister Wang said some good things about you in front of us."
"Hey? Where is the Fourth Princess? Where did she go?" someone asked from the roadside.
"She first went to the South China Sea to find us, and told us to go to the Kingdom of Miaoxiang to find you. Then she went to see Guanyin Bodhisattva to ask about the black bear monster," the Third Princess explained.
"I think she's still trying to see me," someone by the roadside said.
"I think so. Not just anyone can see Guanyin Bodhisattva."
"Didn't I hear this bear say during the day that there's no one to help with matters concerning agarwood? Even Guanyin Bodhisattva probably won't intervene."
"Ugh……"
"How did Fourth Sister end up in this mess..." The Third Princess said with great regret.
"The Fourth Princess and the Third Holy Mother are good friends. Don't you have any connection with the Third Holy Mother?" someone asked from the roadside, puzzled.
"Haha, you may not be familiar with the reputation of us sisters."
"The Fourth Princess is unmarried, and so are you two older sisters. What bad reputation do you have?" The woman on the roadside sized up the Third and Second Princesses of the South China Sea.
"My second sister, she's a fighter." "Me? I like to make bets with people."
"Fourth Sister, you didn't realize it, she hides it very well, she likes to drink a little wine."
The expressions on the roadside were subtle.
The dragon princesses of the Four Seas Dragon Palace certainly have unique hobbies.
One is an alcoholic, one is a gambler, and one may even have a tendency to be abusive. No wonder none of them can get married.
“We don’t get along with the Third Holy Mother. Fourth Sister was often taken care of by the Third Holy Mother when she was drunk, and she felt bad about it, so she became friends with the Third Holy Mother.”
Having his secret exposed by his two older sisters, he recalled some details of his time with the Fourth Princess of the East Sea. During meals, she did indeed have a fondness for drinking, just like him.
"We were quite surprised when our fourth sister became friends with the Third Holy Mother."
"The Third Holy Mother's brother is a big figure in the Three Realms. I always feel that the Fourth Sister is marrying above her station."
"To climb too high? Is that a fair description?" The man by the roadside was busy collecting scrap wood from the library and making a bonfire.
"We also found it incredible that you could be Chenxiang's godfather, but now it seems you do have some ability."
"We're in the South China Sea, and we've gotten to know that black bear."
"Do you know what Guanyin Bodhisattva said...?"
"What did you say?" Lu Bian interrupted the Third Princess.
"Guanyin Bodhisattva once told the Great Sage that the black bear had many supernatural powers, no less than the Great Sage."
“I know that,” Lu Bian nodded.
"you know?"
He picked up a Tripitaka book from the roadside.
The library was reduced to ruins, and the scriptures were scattered on the ground.
People on the roadside were curious about what this scripture, which recorded Mahayana Buddhism and was brought from the West, actually contained.
By the light of the fire, he also began to look through the scriptures.
The contents of the scriptures are obscure and difficult to understand. You can recognize each word on the street, but you can't understand their meaning when they are put together.
There are too many proper nouns, too many metaphors, and even more allusions.
The scriptures you see by the roadside now are the versions translated by Tang Sanzang. If they were the original, unwritten scriptures, they would be even more baffling to readers.
When Xuanzang returned to Chang'an after retrieving the Buddhist scriptures, his journey to the west was not yet over. He translated all 5,048 volumes of scriptures at the Great Ci'en Temple and preached to the monks.
"Why do you think the Black Bear Spirit forced Chenxiang to stay?"
He looked at the two dragon maidens from the roadside.
The second and third princesses exchanged a glance and then shook their heads.
"Alas, I heard something that might be related to agarwood." The Third Princess suddenly remembered something.
"Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has been reincarnated again, and it is said that his reincarnation is of extremely noble status."
"What?!" someone exclaimed in surprise. "Is it Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, who vowed not to become a Buddha until hell is emptied?"
"Mm." The Third Princess nodded.
“Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva has been reincarnated four times.” The Third Princess added, “It was thought that with the transmission of Mahayana Buddhism to Jambudvipa, the evils in the human world would decrease, but the Tang Dynasty fell and the human world became a hellish scene, so Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was reincarnated and came to the human world.”
"..."
"Does the Black Bear Spirit think that Chenxiang is the reincarnation of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva?" asked the roadside.
“How could that be?” The Third Princess immediately refuted the audacious idea from the roadside.
"It is the reincarnation of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva that Chenxiang was able to meet."
