Chapter 240 The Heart Sutra
Old Master Gao has passed away.

At night, most of the people in Gaojia Town were woken up from their beds to begin preparing for the funeral of Old Master Gao.

The elderly prepared their coffins and burial clothes well in advance, tidied up their remains and placed them in the coffins, and set up the mourning hall overnight. They held religious ceremonies according to local customs and set up a long street banquet.

Slaughtering sheep and killing chickens, setting up stoves and pots, everyone is busy inside and out.

Lu Bian and Chen Xiang, two outsiders, became honored guests. Everyone at the funeral came to Lu Bian to offer them a toast, making it seem as if Lu Bian was the filial son of Old Master Gao.

"elder brother……"

Standing by the roadside, staring at the eldest son of Old Master Gao, now in his sixties, whom the wealthy man called his brother, I got goosebumps all over.

"No!" He waved his hand from the roadside.

“Now my Gao family town is relying on you. You are like my own brother!” said the wealthy man.

"The group of people thirty miles away were not some vicious bandits; they were refugees who had fled from elsewhere."

“I negotiated with them last night, and they’ve settled down at the foot of the mountain, forming their own village. Your Gaojia Town should give them a little help to get through this year or two, and they won’t have to worry about the future,” said the wealthy man Gao by the roadside.

"Where did they escape from? Why did they escape?" Master Gao asked with great concern.

“It came from outside Tibet; they say it’s a rat plague.”

"what!!"

Master Gao's expression immediately changed.

A rat plague is a disaster caused by diseases spread by rats!
They weren't afraid of famine or war, but they were afraid of epidemics.

Master Gao quickly distanced himself from the roadside, fearing that the roadside might also carry the disease and infect him. At the same time, he turned around and looked around, wanting to pass on a message to his servant to have the able-bodied men who had just returned gather together and be quarantined for a few days to see if anyone had gotten sick.

“Master Gao, please don’t be anxious.”

"How could I not be worried?! Lu Yingxiong, you don't know how serious the epidemic is. If these diseased rats spread the disease, our Gaojia Town will be wiped out!!"

"My wording caused you to misunderstand."

"This rat infestation is not the same as that rat infestation; it means that rats have become rampant and devastating."

"Ah!" Master Gao was taken aback. "This is almost like a locust plague, isn't it?"

Master Gao imagined the scene of rats covering the ground and shuddered.

"If there are too many rats, they'll spread diseases, won't they?" Master Gao muttered to himself.

"The nemesis of mice...the cat!"

"Yes, we need to raise more cats."

"Master Gao..."

"What advice do you have for me, brother?" Master Gao asked earnestly.

"You can't keep out so many rats with a cat. If hundreds of rats pounce on you, you can eat the cat until you're just a skeleton."

After thinking about it, Master Gao felt that what the man on the roadside said made sense, and his expression changed again.

"Then how can we prevent it?" Master Gao asked.

“Master Gao, you have no need to worry about Gaojia Town.”

"I'll go and see for myself the extent of the disaster in the west."

Gaojia Town is located in the Kingdom of Wusizang, while the neighboring Kingdom of Sihai is suffering from a rat infestation.

……

In a mountain village thirty miles away, hundreds of refugees awoke from their sleep.

They all felt that they had the same dream: a divine being instructed them to live here and left them seeds that could yield a thousand catties per mu. The dream taught them how to grow this grain that they had never seen before.

When the hundreds of people opened their eyes, they indeed saw a small mountain of potatoes piled up in the open space in the center of the stronghold. No one touched them amidst the noisy discussions. Finally, the current leader of the stronghold came out and distributed the potatoes one by one. They then cleared new land on the mountainside and planted the potatoes.

When everyone gets moving, the psychological suggestions planted by the roadside also motivate the displaced people to act according to his ideas.

As evening approached, a convoy of vehicles arrived from the direction of Gaojia Town. More than a dozen vehicles were parked at the foot of the mountain, loaded with piles of old grains. He stood at the head of the convoy by the roadside. He went up the mountain and called everyone down.

Upon seeing over a dozen cartloads of grain, the refugees felt completely at ease. If they ate sparingly, they wouldn't have to worry about starving for at least a few months.

On the second trip, the roadside conducted a more in-depth "magnetic field mind reading" on the leader of the refugees, carefully reviewing the refugees' experiences.

They had been directed to this direction, Gaojia Town.

These hundreds of refugees fled from the Kingdom of Sihari and headed east, accidentally arriving at Mount Futu.

An old Zen master lived on Mount Futu. He told them to go to Gaojia Town, where they could find a way to survive.

“Zen Master Wuchao…”

The roadside view immediately reminded me of this neighbor of Pigsy from "Journey to the West".

Zen Master Wuchao transmitted the Heart Sutra to the Tang Dynasty monk Xuanzang. Even earlier, he asked Zhu Bajie if he wanted to follow him in his practice, showing that he knew the past and the future.

After the monk Xuanzang received the Heart Sutra, Zen Master Wuchao was pulled aside by Xuanzang to ask about the journey to the West. The old Zen master recited a few lines of poetry, outlining the dangers that Tang Sanzang would encounter along the way.

"Agarwood, this is really on the way."

The path that the refugees took was the same path that Chenxiang took on his journey westward, and also the path that Tang Sanzang took on his journey westward hundreds of years ago.

They only needed to follow the trails left by the refugees to be on the same path as the Journey to the West.

Lu Bian was secretly hoping to see that Zen Master Wuchao.

He wanted to know what kind of future Zen Master Wuchao could see in Chenxiang.

Having basically dealt with the refugees, Lu Bian and Chen Xiang didn't waste a moment and continued westward.

The refugees came from Mount Futu, a journey that took about a month, while Chenxiang and his group didn't need that long.

Futu Mountain, as its name suggests, is covered with Buddhist stone carvings, with the entire mountain carved with images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Arhats.

There are not only stone statues, but also murals.

Lu Bian and Chen Xiang wandered around Mount Futu again and again, but they could not find any trace of Zen Master Wuchao.

If we can't find the person, then so be it.

Those on the roadside speculated that Zen Master Wuchao had foreseen Chenxiang's arrival and had hidden himself away early.

That’s okay.

Just treat this as a vacation.

The cultural landscape of Mount Futu is unlike anything else you can find elsewhere.

The exquisite craftsmanship of the Buddhist statues covering the mountain has inspired many people along the roadside.

The two of them even discovered the Heart Sutra, Mahaprajnaparamita, engraved on a black stone tablet. The script was Cuan script, and it contained 270 characters.

"Let's go."

He spoke to Chenxiang by the roadside, and Chenxiang nodded.

Chenxiang silently recited the Heart Sutra once and memorized it completely.

The Heart Sutra is the ultimate guide to spiritual cultivation...

"You're leaving already?"

Suddenly, Lu Bian and Chen Xiang heard a child's voice. After searching around, they found a chubby little monk in front of a mural on a flat mountain wall.

"..."

"What are you doing here?" someone asked from the roadside.

"I'm painting here. Look, this is what I painted," the chubby monk replied with a smile to the roadside.
