Chapter 304 The Eternal King

Consciousness returned to her body, and she slowly opened her eyes by the roadside.

I heard someone chanting scriptures and smelled incense smoke. I got up from the roadside and found that it was the monk Dayuan chanting scriptures for my salvation.

"Huh? Benefactor, you are alive."

"I'm not dead," the man by the roadside said irritably to the monk.

"How could you not be dead, benefactor? You should be back in life now. If your breathing had stopped and your heart had stopped, you would be dead."

"My mind is wandering beyond this place," said the man by the roadside.

"When a person dies, their soul leaves the body, which is pretty much the same thing," the monk said.

"Fine, I won't ask you guys to watch over me next time. I'll just dig a hole and lie down in it myself," he said from the roadside.

"That's good." The monk smiled.

"Now that you're awake, let's continue our journey. I've already exorcised the ghosts here; I'm just waiting for you."

This place is within the territory of Pingdingshan. There is a demon cave called Lotus Cave. Hundreds of years ago, when Tang Sanzang and his disciples went to the Western Paradise to obtain Buddhist scriptures, they encountered the Golden and Silver Boys of Laozi here. The Great Sage fought with the Golden and Silver Boys here, killing many and leaving corpses strewn all over the place. Since then, countless lonely ghosts and zombies have been wandering around.

The monk Dayuan, the reincarnation of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, was a perfect fit for the job. The monsters who died here became ghosts and were all sent to the underworld for reincarnation by the monk in one go.

He stretched his body by the roadside and spent the whole day helping Logan, which didn't delay Chenxiang's journey westward much.

I flipped through "Journey to the West" in my mind and knew that their next destination would be Wuji Kingdom. The book describes how it took Master Xuanzang four or five years to travel from Chang'an to Wuji Kingdom. The Great Sage compared it to how they were only going to reach Mount Ling but hadn't even stepped out of the main hall.

It must be quite a long way from Pingdingshan to Wuji Kingdom.

……

Three months later, Lu Bian, Chen Xiang, and their group entered the territory of Wuji Kingdom.

Apart from the monk Dayuan's former fiancée, who was a mortal, each of them possessed extraordinary abilities. Their ability to arrive in Wuji Kingdom after three months was largely due to their superhuman speed.

Excluding human factors, the territory of Wuji Kingdom was larger than it was during Tang Sanzang's journey to the West several hundred years ago.

The group stayed at an inn in the border town, where they saw the black-boned chicken, a specialty of the Kingdom of Black-boned Chicken, among the meals provided.

The Kingdom of Black Chicken takes its name from the black chicken. Every village and town raises black chickens, and the people kill and eat them during festivals or important life events.

The monk Dayuan ate only plain rice. But he never expected that the Kingdom of Wuji would add chicken oil to the rice when cooking it, so the monk ended up eating chicken oil rice instead of plain rice.

The black-boned chickens of the Black Chicken Kingdom have black combs, black feathers, black skin and claws, and even black bones.

After resting for a day in the border town, I curiously inquired about the local customs and traditions along the roadside.

He discovered that every household had a portrait of a certain person hanging in their main room. After inquiring, he learned that the portrait hanging in each household was actually of the ruler of Wuji Kingdom.

According to locals, the ruler of Wuji Kingdom attained immortality and has lived to this day since he was resurrected hundreds of years ago. It was under the rule of this immortal ruler that Wuji Kingdom expanded its territory and became a rare major power in the western lands.

While other small countries are still struggling with the succession to the throne, Wuji Kingdom had already escaped this problem centuries ago. Wuji Kingdom once had a crown prince, but he died of old age while waiting for the king to abdicate.

When ordinary people chat, they often talk about why the ruler of the country can live forever.

The official claim is that the king was blessed by Buddha, and his resurrection was a transcendence of Nirvana.

"Esteemed guests, why don't you stay a few more days? In a few days, it will be the Nirvana Festival of our Wuji Kingdom."

After resting for a day, they were about to continue westward when the innkeeper tried to persuade them to stay.

"What Nirvana Festival?" someone asked from the roadside.

"It is the festival we celebrate the resurrection and nirvana of our eternal king," the innkeeper replied.

"What do people do to celebrate the holiday?" someone asked from the roadside.

"We'll kill a chicken and eat it," the innkeeper replied. "And anything else?"

"Eat eggs."

"Really boring."

I settled my bill at the roadside and got directions from the innkeeper. Heading west was also the direction of the capital of Wuji Kingdom.

“Lu Bian, aren’t you curious? How could one of the mortal emperors achieve immortality? It doesn’t make sense,” the Fourth Princess of the East Sea said to Lu Bian.

“Ordinary kings cannot live forever, but the ones who protect Wuji Kingdom are the Venerable Xuanzang and the Great Sage,” said the roadside.

"The king of Wuji Kingdom was resurrected after eating the golden pill that the Great Sage obtained from Laozi."

"The last breath that brought the King of Wuji back to life was blown into his mouth by the Great Sage."

"How do you know so much?" The Fourth Princess asked, somewhat surprised.

“I know that from a book,” the roadside man replied.

“This is very unfair,” said the monk Dayuan, frowning.

The reincarnation of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva had an innate and strong understanding of the balance between life and death. The monk Dayuan subconsciously felt that King Wuji should no longer live.

"Monk, would you like to hear a story?"

“I’ll listen if it’s about the King of Wuji,” the monk said.

“I’ll talk about his,” said the man by the roadside.

“A long, long time ago…not too long ago, King Wuji was a benevolent monk. The Buddha sent Manjushri Bodhisattva to guide him to the Western Paradise so that he could attain the golden body of an Arhat as soon as possible. However, Manjushri Bodhisattva disguised himself as an ordinary monk to test King Wuji. As a result, King Wuji hung him in the river and submerged him for three days and three nights.”

"Manjushri Bodhisattva reported to the Buddha, and the Buddha then decreed that the King of Wuji should also be submerged in water for three years. The king was then pushed into the well by Manjushri Bodhisattva's mount, the Green-haired Lion Spirit, and the Green-haired Lion Spirit ruled the Kingdom of Wuji for three years."

"Later... then the monk Xuanzang and his party, who were traveling west, came and rescued the king of Wuji Kingdom."

"This Manjushri Bodhisattva is too wicked," said the monk Dayuan.

"How dare you speak like that? Bodhisattvas are petty; be careful he punishes you." The monk Dayuan was pointed at by the roadside.

"..."

“Chenxiang also ate a golden pill…” The Fourth Princess looked at Chenxiang.

“If Chenxiang is willing to be a mortal, then the King of Wuji Kingdom would be his senior,” said Lu Bian.

“I will not be confined to the mortal realm,” Chenxiang said.

Everyone knew that Chenxiang was going to mess with his uncle.

As he left the inn, the monk Dayuan stared at the portrait of the King of Changsheng Kingdom hanging on the wall for a long time, memorizing the appearance of the King of Wuji Kingdom.

Once they left the town, they walked west along the roadside.

The children walked energetically at the front, while Lu Bian and the monk Da Yuan walked behind them.

"Don't do anything reckless," he whispered to the monk Dayuan by the roadside.

"Killing the King of Wuji Kingdom will cause a lot of trouble."

"No," said the monk Dayuan firmly.

"There is no place in the mortal realm where an immortal emperor can live," the monk said, his voice seemingly coming from the underworld.
