Chapter 312 Caused by a Long-Term Vegetarian Diet

Chapter 312 Caused by a Long-Term Vegetarian Diet

The monk never forgot to find a place for his former fiancée to settle down.

When he was in the Kingdom of Wuji, he saw that all the people worshipped the King of Wuji, and he decided to exclude the Kingdom of Wuji from his mind.

Now that he had entered Chechi Kingdom, the monk began to examine the environment of Chechi Kingdom in his mind.

As they traveled westward, the people of Chechi Kingdom saw that among Chenxiang's group was a monk who invited them all to fast, specifically requesting that they do so out of respect for the Buddha.

They not only respect Buddhist monks, but also Taoist priests.

In China, Buddhism and Taoism also get along well.

Passing through a village, I saw a funeral being held. Monks were chanting sutras to pray for the deceased, and Taoist priests were performing rituals. This back-and-forth chanting had become a custom.

Chechi Kingdom was just a small country; after passing through a few villages and towns, one would arrive at the capital.

Outside the capital city, there is a temple. On the stone tablet next to the temple, there is a story recorded about the battle of magic between the four disciples of Tang Sanzang and the three national teachers of Chechi Kingdom.

After the four members of the Tang Monk's group traveled west, the king of Chechi Kingdom adopted an attitude of not offending anyone. He treated monks and Taoists with great respect. The original three national teachers were actually incarnations of demons, and even wild animals were treated with great care. Gradually, this led to the current atmosphere in Chechi Kingdom.

Nowadays, throughout Chechi Kingdom, people pray to gods and Buddhas for everything, and even when they have nothing to do, they seek out gods and spirits to worship.

Wherever there are people living, there will be temples; wherever there are animals, there will be people making offerings.

People worshipped man-eating beasts like tigers and wolves as incarnations of gods. If someone could subdue a beast, they were considered a reincarnation of a deity and immediately granted official titles and ranks.

In other words, Chechi Kingdom was a small country that could withstand such treatment; a slightly larger country would have already changed dynasties long ago.

The gap between the monarch's potential and the people's moral standards was not large, and no one had any thoughts of rebellion. Even small vendors selling steamed buns in the capital could set up their stalls right at the foot of the palace.

Upon arriving at the capital of Chechi Kingdom, temples were even more numerous, with each deity having its own independent temple. Although they were not large, some small temples being the same size as local earth god temples, offerings and incense were offered without ceasing for a single day.

"The Temple of the Great Sage Equaling Heaven?"

Chenxiang went inside out of curiosity. There was a statue of the Monkey King in the temple, and Chenxiang prayed with the locals.

"The Temple of the Victorious Fighting Buddha?"

Chenxiang went inside again. Inside the temple was a statue of the Great Sage who had attained Buddhahood, and the incense was burning brightly. Chenxiang followed the people and paid his respects.

"The Temple of the Mighty King Bodhisattva?"

When Chenxiang entered, he saw that the statue in the temple was a bull-headed bodhisattva. Chenxiang bowed and thanked the bodhisattva's daughter for her hospitality a few days ago.

"The Monkey King Temple?"

Chenxiang simply stood in front of the temple and looked around, because the temple was full of monkeys, and the roof was covered with monkeys. Entering the Monkey King Temple was like entering a monkey den.

"Why is there a rat temple?"

"Chenxiang, look what's next to the Rat Temple?"

Chenxiang looked to the side and saw that next to the Rat Temple was the Civet Temple.

The rat temple is diligently worshipped by people, and the rats in the temple are all lazy and not afraid of people.

The tanuki temple next door is a tiny room, about the same size as the local earth god temple, with several cats crammed together, none of them giving way to the others.

One cat was pushed out by the other cats, so it darted into the rat temple, caught a rat, and started toying with it until it died.

The group strolled around the city until evening before finding an inn to stay in.

"Young monk, where are you from? Could you show me your ordination certificate?" The innkeeper sized up the monk, Dayuan.

“I am a monk from another country, and I do not have a certificate of ordination.”

"Then we'll have to treat you as a regular guest and charge you for your room," the innkeeper said.

"So, monks with ordination certificates can stay for free?" the monk asked curiously.

"Of course." The shopkeeper nodded.

"I have only just arrived in the city today. Why is it that monks are treated so well here?" the monk asked. "Our king once became a monk at the age of thirteen, but later returned to secular life. Now he is a Taoist priest," the shopkeeper said. "Treating monks well is treating our country's nobles well."

"Why does the king act as both a monk and a Taoist priest?" someone asked by the roadside.

"Of course, we want to live forever," the shopkeeper smiled. "Everyone knows how few people in this world can achieve immortality, so the king only said that living a few more years would be good."

The inn included a meal with the accommodation. The waiter served everyone food, and upon closer inspection, it was all vegetarian food.

"I'm sorry, sir, we locals are all vegetarians. If you want meat, you have to tell us in advance. The meat dishes are also limited to chicken, pork, and lamb."

"The wine is also vegetarian."

They didn't mind the roadside incense burning, and their vegetarian diet only reinforced their stereotypes about Chechi Kingdom.

No wonder the locals all look like skeletons; it's because they've been eating vegetarian food for a long time.

The monk shook his head.

Chechi Kingdom seems alright, but it's not a place you can stay for long.

The king did not order the entire population to be vegetarian, but the people voluntarily adopted vegetarianism, resulting in a significant decline in the overall physical health of the population.

Chechi Kingdom had no external threats, but was plagued by internal problems.

The next day, Chenxiang continued to wander around the city.

The people here are very serious about their faith, and the statues they make for gods and Buddhas, whether they are made of clay or carved from wood, are all exceptionally exquisite.

Standing by the roadside, I thought to myself, "I'm so glad I can enjoy this without having to buy a ticket. What a bargain!"

"Monkey Hair Temple?"

Chenxiang stopped in his tracks, utterly bewildered by what the people here were thinking.

"Let's go in and take a look." The roadside pushed Chenxiang into the Monkey Hair Temple.

The Monkey Hair Temple has an odd name, but it still enshrines the Monkey King. However, the statue of the Monkey King is quite different. In addition to the Monkey King standing tall in the center, there are monks standing around him with their arms raised and fists clenched.

The walls surrounding the statue are covered with colorful paintings that explain the origins of the Monkey Hair Temple.

In the Monkey Hair Temple, the offering was a fruit, and there were only a few sticks of incense burning; hardly anyone came.

Suddenly a group of people arrived at the temple, and the temple abbot hurriedly came to greet them.

"Thank you for your trouble, esteemed benefactors."

The abbot arrived carrying a donation box, grinning foolishly at the roadside, completely ignoring the monk Dayuan in the center.

"Master, may I introduce you?" The Fourth Princess took out a few gold leaves and put them into the abbot's donation box. The old abbot's face was as happy as a blooming chrysanthemum.

"Of course you can."

"Where are you gentlemen from? You don't look like you're from this country."

"It came from abroad," the roadside person replied.

"This Monkey Hair Temple is dedicated to the monkey hair of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Victorious Fighting Buddha."

"Legend has it that if you tuck a hair of the Great Sage between your ring finger and make a fist, and shout 'Great Sage Equal to Heaven' when you encounter bad things, Grandpa Great Sage will come to protect you."

"Just like that!!"

The old host raised his fist, but didn't shout.

"Would you like some monkey hair from the Great Sage? It's still preserved in the temple, for just..."

The old host made an internationally recognized gesture for asking for money.
