Chapter 393 The Gatekeeper Who Only Stops Wizards
Chapter 393 The Gatekeeper Who Only Stops Wizards
"I really didn't teach it that..."
Cohen's voice drifted out from in front of Rolf.
"I'm ready to lead you to jump off the plane—"
“Wait—it must have spotted something familiar—” Newt quickly interrupted Cohen after hearing his dangerous remark. If things went wrong, Newt would immediately Apparate the two of them to the ground. Being carried around in the air by Cohen was no better than being dragged to the ground by a griffin…
The griffin's ability to make sharp turns in the air isn't particularly strong. If it doesn't want to crash into the reinforced concrete of Patras, it will start flapping its wings to cushion the impact when it's five or six meters off the ground. This gives Newt ample time to assess whether the griffin will actually crash into the Muggle streets.
And what it did next was exactly as Newt had predicted. When it was parallel to the two- or three-story houses around it, the griffin flapped its wings to slow down so that it could land smoothly.
"What are you doing, little thing?! My precious grandson is still on your back—" the old water snake hissed angrily at the griffin.
As soon as he landed, Rolf jumped off the griffin.
Some passersby became curious about the voices and sounds of collisions coming from this corner, but under the effect of the Muggle-repelling charm that Newt had just cast, they would suddenly rush home in a panic, breaking out in a cold sweat, as soon as they approached the alley.
"It looks like he suddenly realized that Old Wang next door seems to have come to visit today..." Cohen guessed, watching a Muggle with wide eyes and sweat on his forehead running in the opposite direction.
"Screech!" The griffin cried out anxiously, nudging Cohen with its beak before sniffing around—
“Why can’t the griffin speak in a language I can understand…” Cohen pursed his lips, “But if we summon the Chimera Beast, there won’t be enough room here…”
The streets here are mostly very narrow, and a beast of that size like the Chimera would likely bump into people while walking—let alone cars.
Letting it float in the sky doesn't seem quite right...
So Cohen simply abandoned his plan to announce the Chimera Beast now.
"Don't stray too far from me," the old water snake warned Cohen, "or we'll be exposed."
"I understand," Cohen said. "But do you have a general idea of what the griffin is calling? What does it mean? It looks like a dog circling around looking for its tail..."
"I've never been able to understand what they were saying, father and son; it was all just gurgling or whimpering," the old water snake said. "They're probably hungry..."
"I think you're hungry," Cohen said helplessly.
The old water snake had been eyeing the fishing boats in the harbor since it was in the sky.
"Cohen, are you still here?" Rolf asked in a low voice, having been unable to confirm Cohen's location since dismounting from the griffin.
“I’m on your right—oh well, let’s not bother with invisibility, we’re not wearing any wizard robes…” Cohen said, [Let’s take off the invisibility.]
"Call me Grandpa." The old water snake made a request. "Call me Grandpa and I'll—"
【…】
Cohen didn't speak, but after three seconds of silence, the old water snake helped Cohen and his companions remove their invisibility.
"Don't follow Hisoka's weird habits anymore," Cohen said. "His fatherly love is overflowing, so are you becoming overly doting?"
"How did you know—" the old water snake asked in surprise.
"It's the only snake in the whole box, and it insists I call it 'Dad.'" Cohen said dryly.
-
Although the griffin's navigation method seems completely unreliable, it is actually...
That's completely unreliable.
It brought the three people and the snake to the entrance of the city hall.
"Screech—" The griffin was about to cry out when the old water snake pressed it down with its tail.
"Don't get caught—you're making such a racket while you're invisible..." the old water snake scolded. "There are so many people here..." "It stopped here?" Rolf turned his head and asked Cohen.
To passersby, the three of them looked like two children traveling with their grandfather—the city hall was indeed magnificent, but standing there for so long and staring at it seemed a bit unusual.
"Robbing the city hall, huh? That's interesting," Cohen said, rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
“No wonder Dumbledore was so concerned about me coming with you…” Newt touched his gray hair, half-strained and half-nostalgic, and said, “Your description of the robbery is an exaggeration, isn’t it?”
Cohen blinked.
"?" Newt stared wide-eyed and slowly turned his head.
"?" Rolf, who was about to agree, also stared at Cohen with wide eyes.
“Just kidding, I’m not some antisocial criminal,” Cohen said.
If the poachers led by the griffins are at City Hall, Cohen thinks the people there are likely involved—and it might end up being a robbery by Cohen alone.
However, it's not a big problem; no matter how big things get, it's not too terrible.
Go talk to my Dumbledore and his fellow Dementors!
“Let’s go in and take a look,” Cohen suggested.
Many other tourists walked in openly and without being stopped by the security guards at the entrance—they should have been allowed to as well.
……
“You can’t come in,” the Muggle guards stopped them.
“I need to write a travelogue.” Cohen condemned the man’s behavior of stopping him without even checking his identity, and offered a perfectly legitimate reason: “I can’t exactly write in my travelogue that I was stopped at the Patras City Hall by the doorman when summer vacation is over, can I?”
"No, you need to show relevant proof." Although the guard looked at them with a strange and puzzled expression, he still stopped them outside.
“What kind of proof? We have passports for tourism here,” Newt asked, frowning.
At that moment, a couple of tourists, who appeared to be a married couple, walked confidently through the city hall gates. The gatekeeper merely glanced at them and let them through.
"Hmm?" Cohen raised his eyebrows.
"No."
“It’s a bit too deliberate,” Cohen said with a sullen face.
If this man's soul hadn't clearly been that of a Muggle, Cohen would have treated him as an accomplice of Silver Key.
"You didn't cause any trouble here, did you?" Newt whispered to Rolf.
“I swear I didn’t!” Rolf replied nervously, his voice barely audible.
“I’m going to use the necessary means—” Cohen said to Newt.
But Newt shook his head and pulled them away from there.
The griffin and the old water snake quickly followed Cohen.
“He’s just a Muggle—and there are a lot of people around, maybe even the Greek Ministry of Magic is watching. Don’t do anything rash.” Newt led Cohen and Rolf to a shady spot by the roadside and warned them, “Cohen, the ‘necessary means’ you just mentioned wouldn’t be…”
“Leech,” Cohen said. “I’m a good Dementor…”
