"Yan Hui".

"Yan Hui!"

What are you thinking about? You've been spacing out.

The gentle voice slowly brought Lin Jue back to his senses, and the blurry scene before his eyes gradually became clear.

The walls were painted snow-white, and the overhead lights were so bright they were almost blinding. The bookshelves were filled with medical books, and next to them was a human skeleton model. A wall of banners hung nearby, bearing inscriptions such as "Miraculous Healing Hands" and "Benevolent Doctors."

It's clear that this is a consultation room.

Sitting across from him was a doctor in his thirties. The doctor had handsome features, and his eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses held a gentle smile. He was looking at him with concern: "Why did you space out while we were talking?"

Lin Jue looked at the nameplate on the other person's white coat, which had the two large characters "Zhou Yue" engraved on it.

"I don't know either. My head just started to hurt a bit. It felt like I had a daydream, but I can't remember any of the details." Lin Jue massaged his temples. He felt like something was missing from his head, but he couldn't remember it at all.

"You can fall asleep with your eyes open?" Zhou Yue laughed. "Looks like you've been under a lot of pressure lately. High school students study hard, but you still need to make sure you get enough rest."

Dr. Zhou's tone was very gentle, and Lin Jue felt a sense of warmth from him, so he couldn't help but ask, "Dr. Zhou, have we met before?"

Zhou Yue was taken aback by his question. He stood up from his desk and reached out to touch Yan Hui's forehead: "Yan Hui, why are you talking nonsense? You've been to my clinic several times. Do you think we've met before?"

“No…” Lin Jue shook his head: “That’s not what I meant…”

He thought for a long time but still couldn't describe the feeling. It was like he and Zhou Yue had gone through many things together, but in his memory, he and Zhou Yue were just a patient and a doctor, and their contact wasn't very deep.

"Never mind, I don't know how to explain it." Lin Jue sighed, thinking that he might really be under too much academic pressure lately, which was why he felt a little strange.

"Alright, go sit on the bed. Let me see how your injury from last time is healing," Zhou Yue said, pointing to the examination bed beside him.

Lin Jue obediently sat down, rolled up the cuff of his right trouser leg, revealing a scar seven or eight centimeters long on his calf.

Zhou Yue leaned closer to look and then smiled, "The stitches have all been absorbed, and the recovery is going quite well. I'll prescribe some topical medicine for you later. Apply it for a few days, and make sure your leg doesn't get wet during these few days, and don't do any strenuous exercise."

As he spoke, he seemed to remember something, and his tone became somewhat teasing: "Why would a student like you climb over the wall? Now look what you've done, your legs are all scraped by the fence, and you can't jump or run for a long time."

"I just feel suffocated and want to go out for some fresh air." Lin Jue slowly pulled down his trouser leg.

“Sigh, it’s normal to feel pressured. I went through the same thing when I was studying. Once your leg is better, you can go out more often, go hiking or get some fresh air.” Zhou Yue returned to the table, took out the pen he had been holding in front of his chest, and wrote a prescription.

Lin Jue looked at the pen Zhou Yue was writing furiously in his hand: "Dr. Zhou, why did you open a clinic? You're a medical doctor with excellent medical skills; you could easily work at a big hospital..."

"As long as I can save lives, it doesn't matter where I am," Zhou Yue said without looking up. "But I think you have a better future. The community clinic is too small and completely limits your potential," Lin Jue said with some regret.

“Yan Hui, I’m not studying medicine for my future.” Zhou Yue put down his pen and turned to look at the banners on the wall behind him: “On my first day of studying medicine, my mentor told me eight words.”

"Investigate things thoroughly and understand their principles, so as to benefit the people's livelihood."

"The purpose of being a doctor is to treat medical principles with a rigorous attitude and serve the well-being of the people with superb medical skills. No matter how small the clinic is, it can still save lives and heal the wounded. Those banners are the recognition of patients for me. Curing patients is what I care about most."

"Besides, I feel that hospitals sometimes limit my abilities even more than clinics."

“For example…” Zhou Yue pushed the prescription on the table in front of Lin Jue: “Go get the medicine, you don’t need to pay.”

"No, Dr. Zhou, you've treated me for free these past few times, I can't owe you too much." Lin Jue hurriedly declined, pulling out a crumpled wad of change from his school uniform pocket, about thirty or forty yuan. This made him very embarrassed, as this amount wasn't even enough to cover the small amount he owed.

His voice lowered: "Keep it for now, I'll find a part-time job later to make up for the medical expenses."

Zhou Yue returned the money to Lin Jue: "I know your situation. You should keep this money for food. I don't need you to pay me back."

Seemingly to protect Lin Jue's pride, he added, "Study hard, and when you really make money in the future, please make me a banner."

Lin Jue looked at the crumpled money and felt quite embarrassed, but his situation was indeed very bad. His parents had passed away in a car accident a few years ago, leaving him all alone. Most of the money his parents left behind had been used to pay for his tuition, leaving only a small portion for living expenses, and they were struggling to make ends meet.

"Am I all alone now?"

He was startled; he had a feeling there was someone else, but he couldn't remember who it was.

"Alright, go on, I have to see the next patient." Zhou Yue rubbed his lower back: "I really envy you young people, unlike me, my back hurts so much after sitting for a while."

"Thank you, Dr. Zhou." Lin Jue put away the money and prescription, and bowed to Zhou Yue.

As he walked out of the consultation room, he looked at the patients queuing outside and couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion. Dr. Zhou was indeed a very good doctor, perfectly embodying the meaning of "a doctor's benevolence." Many people in the neighborhood would choose to come to this clinic for treatment when they were sick, and everyone recognized Dr. Zhou's medical skills and character.

After grabbing a bag of medicine from the pharmacy, Lin Jue hurried outside. The clock on the wall had already struck 1, and there was only half an hour left before lunch break and afternoon classes.

As Lin Jue walked out of the clinic, he had a strange feeling. The clinic's environment felt very familiar to him, as if he had done something bizarre in this clinic not long ago, and the daydream he couldn't remember seemed to have started in this clinic.

"How strange..." He shook his head, shaking off the random thoughts in his mind, and realized that he was indeed suffering from sleep deprivation. The passing of his parents and the predicament of facing life alone had put him under a lot of pressure lately.

As he walked out of the clinic, he turned his head and looked back. The sign for Haitian Clinic was hanging above the entrance, and through the glass door, he could see patients and staff coming and going inside.

Even though the clinic was so close, he had a strange, unreal feeling about it. (End of Chapter)
