Chapter 250 The Cowardly Will Not Survive

Upon noticing the commotion behind him, Steward Du felt a chill run down his spine. He leaned back and spoke in a low voice to the servants around him and Ruixin in the carriage, "Everyone, be careful. Those people have probably figured out our trick."

"They've caught up."

Apart from Steward Du, who was driving the carriage, the other people who followed on horseback were a little flustered, not to mention Ruixin, who was now sitting alone in the carriage.

She reached her trembling hand to the carriage window, but didn't even have the courage to open the curtain.

"Don't panic!" Steward Du's voice came from outside the carriage.

After that sound, the previously disordered sound of hooves became orderly again.

Ruixin withdrew her hand, forcing herself to calm down, but she was still trembling with fear.

At this moment, she suddenly missed her mistress very much. If her mistress were here, she would not be so afraid. If her mistress were here, she would not be so afraid.

Suddenly, Ruixin felt the carriage was shaking more and more violently.

The sound of horses' hooves chasing behind them grew clearer and clearer. Steward Du gritted his teeth, turned around and said to Ruixin, "Madam, hold on tight."

Rui gave a flustered "hmm" and gripped the seat tightly with both hands. The next second, the carriage seemed to lift off the ground and suddenly shot forward.

Ruixin was so shaken that she almost vomited; she felt as if her internal organs were about to be shattered.

But a carriage is a carriage after all, and it can never outrun a horse that has no burden.

The group soon surrounded Steward Du and his men.

Steward Du and the other servants of the Du family pulled out weapons from under the carriage, preparing to fight.

The scout leader immediately pulled out the token from his waist and asked, "Why are you running so fast?"

"These mountain paths are narrow; if something really happens, you're all asking for your lives!"

Manager Du had been in business for many years and naturally dealt with government officials. When this person produced the token, Manager Du was somewhat bewildered.

So it turns out that the people who have been following them all this time are government officials?
Seeing that the Du family did not react, the head constable shouted, "What are you all standing there for! Put down all the weapons you have in your hands!"

The servants of the Du family dared not move, and all turned their gazes toward Steward Du.

Seeing this, Steward Du took the lead and put down his weapon, and the rest of the Du family followed suit and threw their weapons on the ground.

The head constable politely addressed the carriage, "Madam Lin, please forgive my rudeness earlier."

"May I ask you to get out of the car now, madam? I have something to tell you!"

Ruixin covered her mouth with one hand and her chest with the other, feeling as if her heart was about to jump out of her chest.

Manager Du glanced deeply behind him, about to offer a word of warning, when he heard a voice coming from inside the carriage.

"My lord, I have caught a cold and just experienced the bumpy ride in the carriage."

"In my current state, I really don't know how to face the adults."

"I wonder if you have something to say, sir? May I speak directly?"

Upon hearing the woman's voice from inside the carriage, the officials felt reassured and their tense expressions lessened.

Only the head of the officials felt something was amiss, so he spoke up forcefully.

"Please alight from the carriage, Madam!"

"If Madam insists on not getting out of the carriage, then don't blame us for being rude."

Ruixin, who was in the carriage, had been speaking with bated breath, but now she was so frightened that she collapsed onto the carriage.

Seeing that there was no further movement inside the carriage, the head constable waved to the constables behind him.

"Madam, then I have no choice but to offend you."

As they spoke, the officials dismounted and prepared to drag Bai Wanqing off the carriage.

Upon seeing this, Steward Du quickly stepped forward and said with a smile, "Gentlemen, how could we possibly trouble you!"

"I'll go invite them! I'll come invite them."

The officials had no choice but to stop and wait for Steward Du to help the man out of the carriage.

Ruixin was practically carried out by Steward Du, for no other reason than that she was terrified.

When the officials saw that only one person emerged from the carriage, they all gasped.

"Where is your master?" the head constable asked sternly.

Manager Du and the others remained silent, while Ruixin, pale-faced and biting her lip, also kept quiet.

The head constable shouted that something was wrong and rushed to the carriage. Sure enough, there was no one else inside.

"Where is Madam Lin?" the head constable asked angrily.

Neither Steward Du nor Ruixin would say anything, leaving the head constable feeling utterly overwhelmed, and the faces of the other constables also turned ashen.

Needless to say, if anything happens to Madam Lin, none of them will survive.

The head constable walked up to Steward Du and grabbed him by the collar.

"Manager Du, even now you still won't tell us?"

"Do you know why our superiors sent us to follow Madam Lin?"

"Aren't you afraid that Madam Lin might encounter trouble on the way?"

“If anything really happens to Madam Lin, you can forget about your head, this girl’s head, and even the heads of us officials.”

Looking at the expressions of the officials in front of him, Steward Du slowly realized that these people really did not intend to harm them.

Otherwise, they would probably be beheaded by now.

"Okay! I'll tell you!"

Steward Du had no choice but to reveal Bai Wanqing's whereabouts. The head constable grinned, cursed under his breath, and immediately led his men on horseback to chase after her.

Seeing that everyone had left, Ruixin hurriedly asked Steward Du, "Steward Du, what should we do?" Steward Du mounted his horse and said to Ruixin, "Miss Ruixin, you should follow them slowly to Yangzhou."

"I'll go after them right now."

After saying that, Steward Du led several members of the Du family toward Bai Wanqing's location.

At this moment, Bai Wanqing was still lying in the woods, her eyes fixed on the group of people fighting down the mountain.

Bai Wanqing originally intended to rest here for a while, but before she could even close her eyes, she heard the sound of horses' hooves not far away.

She had no choice but to hide herself and observe the movements below the mountain.

A pretty figure was being chased by more than a dozen men in black.

Bai Wanqing frowned slightly, not expecting to see such a thing in broad daylight. She wondered what enemies this person had offended to try to kill her.

The person being chased was clearly injured, and soon he was surrounded by the group of men in black.

The man struggled with all his might, but the black-clad men's encirclement of him kept getting smaller and smaller.

The man struggled more and more, and it was clear that he was about to lose his life.

She suddenly roared, "What if you kill me?"

"What you're trying to cover up will eventually be exposed."

"You're scared! Scared!"

Upon hearing the heart-wrenching screams, Bai Wanqing's pupils constricted, and she quickly stood up from a pile of leaves.

She didn't have time to think, so she took out a small porcelain bottle from her waist and ran down to the upwind side of the mountain.

She then opened the medicine bottle in her hand. One bottle wasn't enough, so she opened another. She continued until she opened the third bottle. The group of men in black down the mountain, including the woman, all went limp, and Bai Wanqing finally stopped.

Bai Wanqing rushed to the woman's side, and the woman looked at the person in front of her in surprise.

"Wanqing."

The men in black also noticed Bai Wanqing. They wanted to draw their swords and attack, but because they were poisoned, none of them could move for a moment.

"Susu, let's go!"

Bai Wanqing wrapped Cheng Susu's hand around her shoulder, then suddenly lifted her up, and the two of them stumbled to their feet.

Bai Wanqing was not a martial artist, so she wasn't very strong. After taking only a few steps, her body began to tremble uncontrollably.

The men in black behind him were all experts; although they were poisoned, it was only temporary.

If they didn't escape quickly at this moment, they would both likely lose their lives once the poison in those people was neutralized.

Bai Wanqing struggled to lift Cheng Susu onto the horse, and then mounted the horse herself.

"Hold on tight!" Bai Wanqing turned around and said to Cheng Susu behind her.

However, Cheng Susu was injured and had just been poisoned. Even though Bai Wanqing had given her the antidote, she still didn't have much strength.

She simply tilted her head and gently leaned against Bai Wanqing's back.

"Wanqing, put me down."

"Otherwise, neither of us will survive."

Bai Wanqing growled, "What nonsense are you spouting!"

Bai Wanqing noticed that Cheng Susu was not in good condition, so she took off her own bundle and used it as a rope to tie Cheng Susu to herself so that Cheng Susu would not fall off the horse.

Cheng Susu looked at Bai Wanqing's stubborn back and smiled slightly, but her eyes were red.

"That's great! I never thought I'd see you again." Cheng Susu said weakly.

Bai Wanqing swung the reins, and the horse darted off quickly, the sound of the wind whistling in their ears.

But Cheng Susu still heard Bai Wanqing's murmur, "You'll be alright once you see me."

For some reason, Cheng Susu actually felt relieved and slowly closed her eyes.

Perhaps because she was carrying someone, Bai Wanqing wasn't riding very fast, but based on her current location, it would probably take her another half day to reach the next town.

As darkness fell, Bai Wanqing had no choice but to find a secluded place to rest for the night.

She rode her horse and disappeared into the woods again. Because it was late summer, the trees and grass in the woods were extremely lush. Bai Wanqing helped Cheng Susu walk, and the clothes on both of them were torn by the surrounding branches.

She finally found a relatively flat spot, put Cheng Susu down, took her pulse, and tended to her wounds.

Cheng Susu had four or five knife wounds, but fortunately, Susu was quite skilled.

If it were her, she probably wouldn't be alive today.

After settling Cheng Susu in, Bai Wanqing quietly surveyed the surroundings to see if anyone was following them.

Fortunately, it was quiet all around, and I could not hear the sound of horses running, so I was finally able to rest peacefully for a while.

Glug glug, Bai Wanqing felt a little hungry.

She rummaged through her bundle and found the few remaining pancakes. She gave half to Susu and ate the other half herself with cold water.

It was already dark, but Bai Wanqing dared not light a campfire.

"Cough cough!" Cheng Susu finally had some strength and opened her eyes.

"You're awake!" Bai Wanqing fed Cheng Susu a few sips of water.

Cheng Susu smiled slightly and said, "Wanqing, you are really brave. Do you know that those people are ruthless killers? If you are not careful, you will lose your life."

Bai Wanqing naturally knew this, but what could she do when she encountered it?

She couldn't just stand by and watch Cheng Susu be killed without doing anything.

"I know! But in this world, you can't survive if you're too timid."
