Conan's Exorcist Detective
Chapter 39: One Step
Chapter 39: An Idle Chess Move
Haruhiko Kousaka looked at the photo on the police officer's ID in the other person's hand - Inspector Shiratori Ninzaburo, Third Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigation Division.
Looking at the iconic coral-shaped bangs again, it must be Officer Shiratori, who is at the same level as Inspector Megure and one of Sato Miwako's strong suitors.
However, Haruhiko remembers that this guy seemed to have discovered that his true love was Mr. Kobayashi and gave up pursuing Miwako. It is also unknown whether Shiratori is pursuing Miwako or Mr. Kobayashi in this world.
But that's not the point. What Haruhiko wants to know most now is why his family has become like this.
"Kousaka Haruhiko, the manager of this office, please give me your guidance." Haruhiko extended his hand to shake the other man. "Can I ask what happened at home?"
Shiratori took out a small notebook and read from it: "According to eyewitnesses, around 11 a.m., a group of drunken men broke into your office and started smashing things under the influence of alcohol.
At 12:05, nearby patrol officers arrived at the scene. After seeing the police car, the group fled along the path.
I estimate that the criminal's portrait can be produced before the end of today's get off work, and we will do our best to catch the criminal."
Haruhiko frowned. He noticed something amiss in Shiratori's message: "No one was caught? But there's no place to drink around here, and it's rare for someone to get drunk and cause trouble in the morning, right?"
"Your senses are very sharp," Detective Shiratori praised. "I heard from the first patrol officer who arrived at the scene that the man had tattoos, so he's very likely a yakuza."
"Yakuza? Can we just arrest them directly?" Haruhiko asked.
"You think things are too simple." Shiratori smiled bitterly, "This method is indeed very similar to the method used by the Yakuza to disgust people, but because of this, this method is actually very difficult to deal with.
Firstly, these troublemakers must be marginal figures in the Yakuza organization, without stable jobs or a permanent residence, making it difficult to track them down through normal investigation procedures. Simply causing trouble while drunk is not enough for the Metropolitan Police Department to focus too much attention on them.
Even if you're lucky enough to find one, it's almost impossible to get compensation from these guys. I estimate that each of them has a dozen victims like you waiting for compensation."
Haruhiko's expression turned grim.
There was not much money left in the family, and it was already enough to cover daily expenses. Encountering such unfortunate things was simply adding insult to injury.
He glanced at the signs of damage to the office. The glass door at the main entrance was completely shattered and unusable, and the interior furniture had been maliciously damaged and could not be used. Not to mention that he had not been upstairs yet, so he wondered if there was anything else missing.
Judging from what Officer Shiratori said, it seems that he has no way to deal with this group of yakuza.
A flame of anger rose in Haruhiko's heart.
At this time, Officer Shiratori asked, "Have you offended anyone recently?"
Haruhiko thought for a moment. After traveling through time, if there was anyone he really had a conflict with, besides the murderers who were arrested, it would only be Manaka Yuta. "I had a conflict with a classmate from our school before, and he later dropped out."
Shiratori flipped forward two pages of the notebook in his hand: "What's his name?"
"Manaka Yuta."
Shiratori circled the place where Manaka Yuta was originally written in the notebook.
"This is a useful clue. There is a high probability that the high school dropout is related to the Yakuza. We will continue investigating along this line." Shiratori said.
Haruhiko: "Thank you. Can you tell me about the Yakuza?"
Haruhiko thought that if there was really no other way, he would just go to their house himself. If legal means could not solve the problem, he would not mind using the sword in his hand to make these trash get the punishment they deserved.
"I advise you to calm down. Don't trade your future for the lives of these scumbags. It's a big loss." Shiratori patted Haruhiko's shoulder. "Don't worry. If we really catch these people, I can at least guarantee that they will receive the most severe punishment allowed by the law."
The other party refused to speak, and Haruhiko had no choice.
However, he had no intention of giving up his investigation. Judging from the situation, if he followed the Metropolitan Police Department's procedures, the probability of catching the murderer would be very low.
Also, it is impossible for these guys to cause trouble for me for no reason. There must be other reasons. It is even possible that the other party will attack me again.
It is better to strike first and at least have a certain understanding of the enemy so that you can take precautions.
Haruhiko wondered if he could get information about this case from other channels.
He is more familiar with two people in the Metropolitan Police Department, Miwako Sato and Inspector Megure.
Sato Miwako owed him a favor last time, so asking her for help shouldn't be a problem, but this policewoman is a bit of a feminist, and if she guesses that he's going to cause trouble for the Yakuza, she might try to stop him.
The other is Inspector Megure. After several contacts, he found that Inspector Megure was not a rigid person. After all, he was a police captain and an officer with certain powers. It should be no problem for him to investigate this matter.
Haruhiko even felt that Inspector Megure would be happy to help him.
At this moment, another thing suddenly popped up in his mind, and he called out to Officer Shiratori who was rummaging through the mess on the ground.
"By the way, Officer Shiratori," Haruhiko said, "this is a minor drunken incident, so it shouldn't require a personal visit from you, the inspector, right?"
Shiratori smiled and said, "As expected, this kid has been praised by Megure more than once. He is indeed much better than other high school students." Shiratori continued, "Actually, I'm investigating a case recently that might be related to this gang of yakuza, so I came here to try my luck."
"What's the result?"
"Unfortunately, we didn't find anything." Shiratori closed the small notebook in his hand, but Haruhiko always felt that he looked like he had gained a lot.
The evidence collection at the scene had already been completed. Officer Shiratori didn't stay long. He gave Haruhiko his contact information and told him to contact him if he had any questions, and to talk to him if he noticed anything strange.
Haruhiko nodded in thanks and watched Shiratori leave the office.
Looking at the mess on the floor, Haruhiko first sent a text message to Sonoko, telling her that they couldn't go to the conveyor belt sushi restaurant that night.
Then he contacted the insurance company, but Haruhiko had no hope of getting compensation in this situation. What's more, the original owner's father's insurance share was very small, so even if there was compensation, it would not be much and could not solve the problem of repairing the office.
Suzuki Sonoko gave him a disappointed look and asked him why.
Haruhiko told her what happened at home, then started cleaning the room, checking how many things were missing and reporting back to Officer Shiratori.
After Shiratori Jinzaburou came out of Haruhiko's office, he waited on the roadside for a while.
Soon, an inconspicuous black car stopped in front of him, and Bai Niao opened the passenger door and got in.
The young police officer Terasaki who was driving was smoking, and the car was filled with smoke.
When Terasaki saw Shiratori get in the car, he quickly opened the window a crack and said, "Officer, if those guys knew you weren't investigating a missing persons case, but were instead personally at the scene of a drunken brawl, they'd probably suspend you, right?"
Detective Terasaki grew up under the guidance of Shiratori Renzaburo, and the two chat very casually in private.
Shiratori smiled and said, "What do those theorists know? If you want to solve a case, sometimes changing your perspective can produce unexpected results."
Detective Terasaki put out his cigarette in the car's ashtray. "Judging from your expression, could it be that you've found a clue?"
"It's not a clue, but I've planted a seed that might become the key to breaking the deadlock." Shiratori opened the notebook. "It's now certain that the missing victim ultimately had a close connection to 'Baijiu Pharmaceuticals,' but I've applied for a search warrant several times, and they just won't approve it. Don't you think this is strange?"
Detective Terasaki said, "Are you saying someone is secretly obstructing the investigation?"
"This person has considerable power. I guess he might be a high-ranking police officer or a member of parliament," said Shiratori.
"Is that so..." Terasaki frowned. "What does that have to do with this high school student? I bet he almost cried when he came home and saw his house smashed."
Shiratori showed him the page with the name "Makanaka Yuta" circled in the notebook: "This man named Makanaka Yuta has a conflict with Kosaka Haruhiko, and Yuta has close ties with the Yakuza organization suspected of being involved in the missing persons case.
That day I pretended to be a taxi driver and deliberately tested him. His reaction was not quite right, but subsequent investigations showed that he was just an ordinary delinquent teenager.
Terasaki felt his mind was a little confused, and asked tentatively, "So, you want Kousaka Haruhiko to infiltrate the enemy organization?"
"Do you think we're filming a movie? I'm not as naive as you." Shiratori rolled his eyes. "I just vaguely feel that this high school student named Haruhiko might be connected to that gang of yakuza. Then we can raid their lair under the pretext of looking for him."
"I think you're wasting your energy. This kid must be so scared by the Yakuza that he's about to piss his pants. There's no way he's going to mess with them again."
"You are wrong. He just asked me about the news of this gang of yakuza. I guess he might want to solve it himself." said Bai Niao.
Terasaki's eyes widened. "Solve it yourself? A high school student wants to face the Yakuza organization alone?"
Shiratori smiled and said, "He's not an ordinary high school student. Several of the cases that Megure handled were deduced by him. And when the second daughter of the Suzuki family was kidnapped, he was the one who chased down the kidnappers and took them out. In short, he's a very talented high school student."
When Detective Terasaki heard this, his stereotype of Haruhiko changed a little, but he still didn't think Haruhiko dared to confront the Yakuza.
"But no matter how capable he is, he is just a high school student. I think it might be a momentary passion. When he calms down, he will realize how naive and ridiculous his original idea was, and in the end he still has to ask us for help." Detective Terasaki said.
"Who knows? Let's wait and see." Shiratori didn't argue with him. "Let's go back to the police station first and see if those people who are collecting materials can bring us some surprises."
Terasaki stepped on the accelerator and the black car started slowly.
"Wait!" Shiratori suddenly shouted.
Terasaki released his foot on the accelerator and looked at Shiratori Renzaburo in confusion.
Shiratori's eyes were fixed on the rearview mirror. He saw a speeding car stop in front of the door of Haruhiko's office.
Immediately afterwards, someone he didn't expect opened the car door and walked into the office.
