Chapter 203 Offense and Defense
Chapter 203 Offense and Defense (Part Two)
Prince Chris's army began its attack on the Minisian camp.
The first to engage in combat was the watchtower on the northern ridge. The Zhongshan Wolf Battle Group and three smaller player battle groups, along with some solo players, eagerly climbed the jagged peaks, launching a full-scale attack right from the start without even a probing attack.
During this process, the half-company of infantry stationed at the top of the ridge fired downwards with matchlock guns and crossbows.
High-level strategy, beat the idiots.
Even though the players had a numerical advantage, superior firepower, and even bulletproof shields during the climb, they still suffered significant losses in the first round of firefights, with seven or eight people dying.
Conversely, the Minieses who hid on the ridge survived unharmed; they were well hidden behind the rocks.
This infuriated the players attacking from above, so they moved the four tiger-squatting cannons that the four warbands had put together and fired them at the 200-meter-high ridge, firing hundreds of shotgun shells and suppressing the Minieses on the mountaintop for a time.
The Minieses also had cannons, but even their lightest three-pound field guns were bronze cannons that fired apple-sized shells, and even after being removed from the gun carriage, they still weighed more than 120 kilograms.
In contrast, the Tiger Crouching Cannon, especially the one produced by Chris, weighs only twelve kilograms, and even a strong man can carry it while running and climbing mountains.
Therefore, halfway up the mountain, the player brought out four light cannons to bombard the area, while the Minisians could only bring out ten swivel cannons and were beaten so badly they couldn't even lift their heads.
The so-called whirling cannon was an ultralight cannon that the Minieses installed on the deck railings of ships. Because the cannon barrel was as thick and long as an adult's arm, its weight was about the same as that of the tiger crouching cannon.
Such artillery is more accurately described as a primitive, large-caliber shotgun than a cannon. However, due to its light weight, the Minisians remembered it and carried it up the mountain during this ridge defense.
The fact that this ultralight cannon, which could only fire grapeshot, was suppressed and unable to lift its head in a firefight with the Tiger Crouching Cannon does not mean that they were useless.
As players continued to climb under the cover of fire from the Tiger Crouching Cannon, and after much effort approached the summit, the Tiger Crouching Cannon below ceased its relentless suppressive fire to avoid friendly fire.
This was a golden opportunity. The long-prepared Minisian artillerymen stood up in unison from behind the wood, stones, and sandbags they had been using as cover, and fired their ten cannons at the vast number of players below.
The sudden barrage of fire from the spinning cannon caught over a hundred players off guard, and their screams echoed through the valley.
The whirlwind cannon's shotgun shells exploded in the crowd, forming a deadly net of fire that instantly knocked down the players at the forefront.
Amidst the flying blood and gore, some players were hit directly in vital areas by shotgun shells and fell to the ground on the spot, while others were hit on half of their bodies by flying lead bullets and rolled down the hillside in a bloody mess.
"Damn it!"
The commander of the Zhongshan Wolf Squad roared as his wolf-head shield was hit by shotgun pellets, which made his arms go numb. When he turned over, he saw that the leather shield was covered with a dense array of bullet holes, as if it had been stung by a swarm of bees.
He turned his head and looked around. In this sudden barrage of fire, at least half of the hundred or so men had been killed.
The reason for this is that, apart from the fact that most of the players attacking from below were novices, causing them to stand too close together, the firing range of the Minisians' ten cannons was also carefully planned, with little overlap between the firing ranges.
Secondly, due to the uphill attack, the player's location is basically without cover, and the player can only withstand the attack with their body. If the Zhongshan Wolf Squad leader hadn't gone to the trouble of carrying a shield up the mountain, he would definitely have been lying down.
So much so that when the ten cannons opened fire, the rain of lead bullets they fired covered a large area very evenly. The lead bullets they fired had low penetrating power, but were extremely dense. After a round of firing, there was a chorus of screams below, while the Minisians above immediately cheered loudly. In their view, this attack had been repelled, the enemy below had been frightened by their cannons and would surely run away, and they could use crossbows and arquebuses to reap the lives of the fleeing soldiers.
However, this is not the case.
"Don't stop! Charge forward!"
The commander of the Zhongshan Wolf Squad, "Iron Claw," roared angrily and kicked aside a corpse blocking his way.
He threw down his nearly destroyed leather shield, raised his axe, and led the charge towards the last thirty meters of steep slope. The players behind him roared like wild beasts as they followed him in a desperate charge.
Even novice players are still players, and they all have the courage and dignity of players. After just being bombarded, they did have the idea of retreating, but the shouts and laughter above them successfully enraged them.
No further mobilization was needed; when Iron Claw led the charge, the players who could still move naturally followed.
The player's reckless charge startled the Minisians on the ridge, causing their volleys to fire hastily and haphazardly. After one volley, only seven or eight unlucky men were hit.
As the Minisian gunners and riflemen frantically loaded their second rounds, the players in the front row had already rushed up to them.
A player with a blood-covered face leaped into the artillery position, his machete cleaving the nearest gunner and cannon in two. The mountaintop was instantly engulfed in a bloody melee. The spinning cannons became ineffective at close range, and the Minisian defenders had no choice but to draw their swords to fight back.
After being battered by cannons and muskets, not many players managed to reach the summit. Iron Claw, who led the charge, had lost an arm and was less than one-tenth of his original fighting strength. The other players, even those who were not injured, had more than half of their stamina depleted.
In contrast, the Minieses had half a company of infantry, or 150 men, of whom 50 were swordsmen and shieldmen, wearing breastplates and wielding swords and shields, and were skilled in close combat.
So much so that apart from the early players managing to kill some musketeers by surprise, once the sword and shield soldiers arrived, they started to have bad luck.
Iron Claw gripped the neck of a Miniese swordsman with his remaining right arm, his teeth biting down hard on the man's visor. With a clang of metal on metal, two of his front teeth broke, but he managed to tear a gap in the visor with brute force.
"Damn it, you're dead!!!"
He spat out blood and foam, then spat the broken teeth mixed with blood into the gaps in the enemy's faceplate. Taking advantage of the enemy's panic, Iron Claw used his knee to knock the enemy over, snatched the short sword with one hand, and stabbed it into the enemy's throat.
The surrounding area had descended into primal hand-to-hand combat, and although the players were exhausted, they unleashed astonishing ferocity.
Some people rolled down the cliff with Miniese soldiers in their arms, some tore open the throats of enemies with their teeth, and one player with the ID "Mad Dog" had three broken swords stuck in his abdomen, yet he still swung a captured spinning cannon as a club.
No matter how fierce the players were, they were still outnumbered and were all wiped out after ten minutes.
However, their deaths were not without value. As the Minisians killed the last Iron Claw with lingering fear, the second wave of attacks from the players behind them came. The fastest player even stepped on the lead bullets fired by the spinning cannon.
"Kill them, brothers! Take this damn hilltop and kill all those bastards up there!!!"
