I built a manor in the Middle Ages
Chapter 115 Wooden Fort Layout
Chapter 115 Wooden Fort Layout (35)
Mid-June of 1042 in Burgundy was destined to be an unforgettable day for Luc.
The magnificent building, which was twenty feet high, fifteen feet wide and thirty feet long and took more than four months to expand, stood before everyone.
The serfs looked at the wooden fort with admiration. In an era when most houses were low thatched houses, Luc's former wooden house could be considered luxurious, not to mention the fortress that was only slightly inferior to the Baron's Castle.
The wooden fort was gray in color, with a chimney extending from the right. After a brief observation and having the men move all the supplies inside and place them properly, Luke, Ryan and the others, unable to hide their smiles, stepped into the wooden fort.
When you push open the double doors, the first thing that catches your eye is a long table that is twice as big as the previous one, placed right in the middle.
The long table was no longer surrounded by long benches, but by seven chairs with reclining backs. The raw, simple wood, after being expertly carved by Ryan, had a rustic feel to it.
On the table, there are some specially made exquisite pottery, sets of wine glasses, tableware, fruit plates, and even vases for flowers.
"It always has to be a bit classy." Ryan chuckled.
"This is the first floor hall, sir. Besides daily meals, you can also gather others for meetings here."
Old Eike explained to Luc that he and Ryan were the main designers of the wooden fort's layout.
The hall occupies about two-thirds of the length of the first floor. Behind the wooden table is a slightly raised platform, on which is the real main seat.
The main seat is made of bricks and stones, the surface of which is dyed pure black with ochre paint. Soft deerskin is laid on it, and a dazzling stag pattern is hung on the wall behind it.
Climbing up the three steps to the platform and sitting on the wide stone chair, with my arms resting on the armrests that are large enough to accommodate all my arms, I do feel a sense of power.
"Well, although the symbolism is greater than the practical use, you guys are still thoughtful."
After a few words of praise, I continued to inspect the first floor.
In addition to the hall, there is a wooden staircase on the far left of the first floor. Under the wooden staircase, there are various deer antlers, bear teeth, and pig teeth that Luc had collected in advance. There is a small door a few steps further.
I opened the small door and looked inside, and saw a long corridor.
There are small windows every few steps in the corridor. Go to the end and turn right to find a room that is ten feet wide and fifteen feet long.
Luc looked around. There was a tall table with long legs, and various pots and pans were placed underneath. On the tabletop, there were coarse salt, oil bottles, and all kinds of kitchen utensils. There were also a few low stools and low tables that only reached his calf. There was a small fireplace on the east side. As Luc expected, old Eike's voice drifted over: "My lord, this is your kitchen."
"Your servants will prepare food for you here. This small door on the north side leads to the cellar, so you can take it as you like."
Luc nodded. The spacious house was big enough for several people to cook at the same time. Of course, they would also eat in the kitchen.
The layout of the first floor is so simple, and it becomes more and more complicated as you go up to the second floor.
The second floor is divided into six areas. The largest one is the servant's room. There is basically nothing furnished in the servant's room except a few wooden boxes for personal belongings and several straw mats on the ground. This can accommodate as many servants as possible. However, there are only two now, so it is still spacious.
The second room is on the north side and is the utility room, where tools such as thatched brooms and linen mops, as well as buckets and pig hair brushes are stored.
The houses on the sunny side are very exquisite.
Luc walked in and found that the room not only had matching tables and chairs similar to those on the first floor, but also a small bed.
"Ahem, my lord, this is the room prepared for your future offspring."
Luc laughed dryly. "That's very thoughtful."
Next to it is the bathroom, which is equipped with a washbasin, soap and a long bathtub. This is the special bathroom for Luc and his partner.
And in the dark corner is the toilet.
Or, in other words, a makeshift toilet. The servants, of course, used the public toilet outside. Luc had a private toilet, one of the earliest built, behind the wooden fort. But if he needed to get up in the middle of the night, he could use this small compartment in the corner, which was ventilated on three sides and had a special wooden barrel inside. A servant would clean it the next day.
The last area is the lobby and corridor on the second floor, but in order to make it appear less empty, some flowers and plants are placed there.
On the third floor is the real core area of the wooden castle - Luc's living room!
The wooden stairs to the first floor are on the west side, and the second floor is on the north side. As soon as you reach the top of the stairs, you will see a closed wooden door.
This is completely different from the second floor. On the second floor, you can gradually get a glimpse of the whole picture as you climb the stairs, but on the third floor, you can't see anything unless you go in.
When the wooden door was opened, the first thing that came into view was a wooden dummy of human height, wearing Luc's chain mail and helmet. Extending along the wooden wall, knight swords and shields were hung. Turning around and looking to the south, a large bed at least six and a half feet long came into view.
On top of the bed were several sheepskin mattress covers and a deerskin quilt.
There are even supports erected around the bed to form a bed top. According to old Eike, bed curtains can be installed in the future, of course, if there are any.
There is a bedside table on each side of the bed, and on the west side is a set of tables and chairs, also filled with flowers.
Directly opposite the bed was a luxurious wooden cabinet six feet high and nine feet wide, with a lance leaning against the corner.
In addition to this, there is a small compartment in the northeast, which will be the secret room where Luc stores the really important things.
Luc walked around the third floor and kept praising Ryan and the others. Ryan had put a lot of effort into these furniture, and these rooms almost covered all the basic functions.
But what made Luc most satisfied was not these.
Luc strolled to the east of the bed and reached out to pat the brown fireplace.
That’s right, the real difficulty of this wooden castle, and the project that Ryan is most proud of, is this fireplace that has been quietly located in the east from beginning to end and runs through three floors!
Why one side?
Because as soon as you open the first-floor hall, there is a large fireplace made of red bricks on the right, which heats the entire long table.
The fireplace was built layer by layer, passing the second floor, and a new fireplace was built on the third floor, facing Luc's bed.
The two fireplaces are of the same origin and can both be used to light a fire for heating. The internal flue connects them and discharges them up the chimney.
In order to prevent smoke from leaking, each fireplace is built with a damper to prevent smoke from flowing back when it is not in use. The gaps are then finely ground with clay, and the chimney is raised and expanded in thickness.
The last month was basically spent on it.
Luc looked at the charcoal placed in the grooves on both sides of the fireplace and said sincerely: "Lian, your carpentry skills have surpassed your father."
Ryan smiled broadly and bowed slightly.
"Master, this fireplace can be lit on winter nights. Normally, we only need to keep the fireplace on the first floor to keep the entire fort warm."
"As for the small fireplace you see in the kitchen, it's an independent wooden fort with its own chimney in the northeast corner."
Seeing that Ryan had taken care of everything, Luke said no more and entertained the two of them in the first-floor lobby that night.
From now on, this wooden castle will be the center of his activities. Luc thought about it and named it Knight Castle.
The medieval naming method was so simple and unpretentious.
For example, the new surname Luc gave himself, Montmorency, translates to valley forest.
Lane means son of the alley.
The wooden castle was completely completed and June was coming to an end. After two days of rest, Luc took Ryan and Hans to Cooper Castle to prepare for his wedding.
