Chapter 49 Grandma Sun
He pulled away the old woman's hand that was holding Xinting. The old woman was none other than Granny Sun, who was known in the neighborhood for being difficult.

Grandma Sun was pulled by the sudden force and staggered, almost falling to the ground.

She looked up and saw it was Madam He. A hint of panic flashed across her face, but she quickly put on a fawning smile: "Oh, it's the Gu family! This old woman... I just wanted to ask this young lady..." Before she could finish speaking, Madam He interrupted her sharply.

"What are you asking? Why are you asking me questions right here at my doorstep!"

Mrs. He pulled away Old Mrs. Sun's withered hand, as if shaking off something dirty, and patted her sleeves in disgust.

"Grandma Sun, don't try that on me! Your tricks might fool others, but you can't fool the Gu family!" Grandma Sun was pulled by the sudden force and staggered, almost falling to the ground.

Her eyes darted around, and she immediately put on a pitiful look, pointing tremblingly at Madam He, wailing, "Oh dear, Madam Gu, what are you doing! This old woman is too old for you to take this kind of treatment!"

"Stop pretending!" Madam He ruthlessly exposed her. "Who doesn't know about your little act of feigning illness? Just a few days ago you were lively and arguing with people, how come you're all sickly today?"

When Grandma Sun saw that her feigned injury had failed, she tried a different tactic. She rubbed her hands together and said to Song Yu with a big smile, "Gu family daughter-in-law, this old woman has something I want to say to you. Can we talk in private for a moment?"

Xu Qingmeng glanced at her, her tone gentle yet firm: "My mother has always been in charge of matters in my family. If you have anything to say, just tell my mother." With that, she picked up the fish basket and went straight into the restaurant, and Xinting quickly followed her in.

Grandma Sun watched Xu Qingmeng enter the door, feeling resentful but not daring to force her way into the Shen family's restaurant. She could only stare longingly at Madam He, her wailing abruptly ceasing, replaced by a hesitant expression: "The Gu family... my grandson..."

Grandma Sun took a deep breath and continued, "My grandson has recently fallen ill, and we have no money for medical treatment. I really have no other choice... I would like to ask the Gu family if they could help me find him some work?"

He listened silently, her eyelids slightly lowered, her face expressionless.

She had already made up her mind, but she didn't want to directly offend Old Lady Sun and cause trouble.

Seeing that Mrs. He remained silent, Old Mrs. Sun quickly added fuel to the fire: "Even just cleaning and washing the dishes would be fine! My grandson is quite diligent and won't slack off..."

Finally, Madam He spoke, her voice calm yet firm: "Grandma Sun, I understand your thoughts. I will consider your grandson's matter. But the rules of the Gu family cannot be broken, and you must understand that as well."

Grandma Sun's heart sank. She looked at Li Shi with resentment, pondering her next move.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Xu Qingmeng was busy preparing the lunch set meal.

Song Qingmeng planned to make boiled fish and a meat dish at noon, mainly because she was worried that the guests wouldn't be able to accept it. She focused on preparing the several plump grass carp.

Fish scales fluttered under the knife, gradually revealing silvery-white skin. He asked Xinting, "What did Old Lady Sun ask you just now?"

Xinting replied, "She inquired about our family's monthly allowance and profits, and also asked if we were hiring..." Xinting added, "She also asked if I was engaged, but I didn't say anything."

Xu Qingmeng deftly scraped the fish scales, the blade flying in her hand, the silvery scales falling like snowflakes.

Without looking up, she instructed Xinting, "If Grandma Sun comes again, don't pay any attention to her. She has a bad reputation and is good at making things up and stirring up trouble. Getting involved with her will only bring you bad luck." Xinting nodded repeatedly, feeling a little uncomfortable when she thought of Grandma Sun's greedy appearance earlier and how she cared about her engagement.

In the front yard, just as Madam He was about to refuse Old Lady Sun, she heard her say, "Gu family, my grandson is strong and healthy, he can do the work of two people! For just two taels of silver, he can do everything from washing clothes and cooking to sweeping and chopping wood!" Old Lady Sun had a shrewd and calculating look on her face, as if the Gu family had gotten a great deal.

Two taels of silver could hire two skilled workers in town; she was clearly trying to take advantage of the situation.

He sneered inwardly, but remained outwardly calm.

She was about to speak when she heard Xu Qingmeng's clear voice from the kitchen: "Mom, the workers are about to finish, we need to hurry."

A glint flashed in He's eyes, and a plan came to her mind.

She smiled meaningfully at Grandma Sun: "Grandma Sun, about this matter you mentioned..." She deliberately dragged out her words, glancing towards the kitchen, "Look, the workers are almost done with their work. I'll discuss it with my daughter-in-law."

Upon hearing this, Old Mrs. Sun thought there was hope and hurriedly nodded and bowed, "Of course, of course, please take your time to discuss it, Mr. Gu." She stared expectantly at the kitchen, secretly calculating in her mind, if she could really get her grandson into the Gu family, what would happen in the future…

In the kitchen, Xu Qingmeng handed over the task of preparing the fish to Xinting, while Xi Shi had already started cooking.

He walked to the kitchen door and told Mengniang about Grandma Sun's desire for her grandson to work at the restaurant. She embellished the story, describing how Grandma Sun praised her grandson for being capable and how she demanded exorbitant wages.

Xu Qingmeng immediately understood what Madam He meant and feigned surprise, saying, "Such a thing is possible? This old lady Sun is really being far-fetched!"

He returned to the front yard with a fake smile on her face: "Grandma Sun, my daughter-in-law and I have discussed it, and she said that we have enough manpower at home and do not need to hire anyone for the time being. You should find another job."

Upon hearing this, Grandma Sun's smile froze instantly.

She never expected the Shen family to refuse. She had already offered very low wages, and her grandson was so capable. How could the Shen family not appreciate his talent?
She said reluctantly, "Madam Shen, please reconsider? My grandson really..."

Mrs. He interrupted her impatiently, "Don't bother thinking about it. We really don't need anyone in our family. You should leave now and not delay our business." As she spoke, Mrs. He began to "kindly" help Old Mrs. Sun up, but in reality, she was pushing her out.

Grandma Sun was being pushed and shoved by Madam He, her heart burning with anger, but she dared not retaliate.

Her eyes rolled and a plan came to her mind.

As she reached the steps at the entrance of the restaurant, she stumbled and fell heavily to the ground with a piercing scream: "Ouch! Murder! The Gu family is beating people!" Lying on the ground, clutching her leg, she began her performance.

Looking at the old lady Sun lying on the ground, Madam He showed no panic, but instead revealed a cold smile.

She crossed her arms, looked down at Old Mrs. Sun, and said in an icy tone, "Old Mrs. Sun, don't try that! I didn't touch you..."
