Chapter 90 Mugwort Green Dumplings
As soon as Mrs. He said this, the people around her burst into laughter. "Aunt He, why don't you make money?"

"These zongzi don't make any money; I even lost a lot of money on them. You should be happy if you buy them. Go ask around about the price of Shen Ji's salted duck eggs, and you'll know how much these zongzi are worth."

“I actually know the price of these salted duck eggs. My child saw that they were rare and wanted to buy them. But when I asked, I was shocked to find out that they cost five coins each. So I didn’t buy them.”

"Yeah, I asked too. How much does an egg cost? Who would be willing to buy it? Raw eggs only cost a few dollars."

······
What Mrs. He said was absolutely true; the Gu family's zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) business really didn't make much money.

One person immediately tore one open, and everyone knew how high-quality the Gu family's zongzi were.

Before long, the rice dumplings were sold out, not even until dawn.

Many of the people who arrived later were filled with regret, lamenting that they hadn't gotten up earlier and missed the Dragon Boat Festival, which only comes once a year.

Later, I heard from Mrs. He that there were still people there at night. If they didn't have to go to work, they would have loved to stand guard at the entrance of Gu's restaurant until night.

The zongzi for sale were all gone, but there were still some left to give away. Xu Qingmeng packed some in a food box and handed it to Gu Yunyi, asking him to send them to the Huang residence.

Then some more were prepared and sent by Ms. He to her neighbors on the left and right, as well as to families who were on good terms with her.

Xu Qingmeng is a typical post-90s generation. The festive atmosphere that has been passed down in later generations is not as strong as it is now. It has become more of a money-making gimmick for businesses.

All she knew were things mentioned in books: dragon boat races and eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings); she knew nothing else.

As soon as Yun Sheng and Yun Mo got out of bed, Madam He tied five-colored ropes around their necks. She also tied them around Xun Ge'er, Xin Ting, and Xu Qingmeng, saying it was to ward off evil spirits and plague.

Seeing that Xu Qingmeng didn't quite understand the Dragon Boat Festival customs, Madam He hung mugwort by her bedside and gave her a sachet to hang on her waist.

Xu Qingmeng smelled it and knew it contained mugwort, since there was mugwort everywhere in the house and the smell permeated the air.

When mugwort is mentioned, Xu Qingmeng immediately thinks of a delicious treat: mugwort glutinous rice dumplings. Since she also has egg yolks and red beans to wrap zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), she decided to make them right away.

Ms. He provided some fresh mugwort, which she washed clean, removing withered leaves and impurities.

Bring water to a boil in a pot, add a small spoonful of salt, blanch the mugwort, then immediately remove it and cool it in cold water.

Blanch the mugwort, crush it, add an appropriate amount of hot water, and stir it into a mugwort paste. Add water from time to time, but not too much, so as not to affect the color and taste.

Next, mix glutinous rice flour, rice flour, granulated sugar, and salt in a large bowl.

Pour the mixed mugwort paste into the powder while stirring with chopsticks until a dough of medium consistency is formed.

If the dough is too dry, add water as needed; if it is too wet, add some glutinous rice flour.

Xu Qingmeng prepared two kinds of fillings. One was an egg yolk filling, which involved steaming salted egg yolks and then crushing them.

I also prepared red bean paste filling. I poured the soaked red beans, along with the soaking water, into a pot, and added enough water.

Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to low heat and simmer until the red beans are soft and tender, easily pierced with chopsticks. This process takes about one to two hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the red beans from burning.

Pour the cooked red beans into a cheesecloth and mash them into a paste, then strain out the bean skins. Pour the blended red bean paste into a pot, add granulated sugar, and stir-fry slowly over medium-low heat.
When the red bean paste begins to thicken, add lard and continue to stir-fry until the red bean paste becomes very thick and can be formed into a ball. The red bean paste is then ready.

Divide the kneaded dough into small portions. Take one small portion, flatten it with your hand, put in an appropriate amount of filling, wrap it up like a glutinous rice ball, pinch the opening tightly, and then roll it into a round shape.

Place the wrapped qingtuan into a steamer and steam over high heat for 15 minutes, until the qingtuan become crystal clear.

While the steamed glutinous rice balls are still hot, brush a thin layer of cooked oil on the surface to make them more shiny.

"Sister-in-law, what is this?" Yun Sheng asked curiously, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the green rice dumplings in the steamer.

Xu Qingmeng smiled and said, "This is mugwort glutinous rice ball. Today is the Dragon Boat Festival, so I made something different for you."

Yunmo also came over and sniffed with her little nose, "It smells so good, sister-in-law's cooking must be delicious."

Xu Qingmeng brought the steamed green rice dumplings to the table. Yun Sheng ran quickly and reached out to grab them, but He Shi gently patted her hand: "Have you washed your hands? They just came out of the pot. Aren't you afraid of burning yourself?"

"Mother, I've already washed it, I'm not afraid of getting burned." Yun Sheng said, and then eagerly picked it up and took a bite.

With her mouth stuffed full, Yun Sheng mumbled, "Sister-in-law, this is delicious. It's sweet and has a special fragrance."

Yunmo nodded vigorously, "The salty and fragrant egg yolk filling is delicious, I like it."

Xinting, on the other hand, thought the red bean paste filling was tastier, as it was sweet and sticky.

Madam He also ate one and praised it highly, saying, "Mengniang, this mugwort glutinous rice ball is excellent; I've never seen it before."

“Mother, this mugwort is fresh right now for the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s both festive and healthy to use it in food,” Xu Qingmeng said.

This is Xujia Village.

"Honey, I'm back."

"Auntie!" Xinyi, who was playing in the yard, was the first to spot her and quickly went to greet her.

The second sister-in-law of the Xu family, who was tending the fire inside, darted around faster than anyone else.
"Sister-in-law is back! I've missed you so much these past few days. Oh, sister-in-law, you've gained a little weight. I must say, the food at my sister-in-law's house is really nourishing. Look at how radiant you are. If you stayed a few more days, I might not even recognize you if we walked past each other."

Wang Cuiqin didn't even bother to acknowledge her, and her face immediately fell.

This person is really something; all he can do is offend people and never say a decent thing.

Wang Cuiqin rolled her eyes and ignored her completely, then turned to her third sister-in-law, Li Xiufang, who was late in, and said, "Third sister-in-law, you've had a hard time these past few days."

"What's so hard about it? Xinwan and Xinyi are helping out. Isn't it always like this?"

Li Xiufang's expression softened, and she continued, "Sister-in-law, how is Xun'er now? Is it serious? Why didn't you bring him back so he could rest and recover at home?"

Wang Cuiqin waved her hand: "Sister-in-law, it's nothing serious. I was quite scared at first, but when I got closer, I saw that it was nothing serious. A few days ago, he couldn't even lift his wrist, but now he can run and jump. He's being well taken care of, and my brother-in-law even teaches him to read and write. My younger sister also dotes on him and has arranged everything for him. She even said that Xinyi can go out and play when she has nothing to do!"
