Chapter 80 Danger Lurks
Su Wanqing shifted her gaze from Lin Che's wrist and said in a steady voice, "But your condition isn't very good. I'll give you an injection of stabilizer first."
She took out a medical syringe from her backpack and pierced Lin Che's arm with the needle.
Lin Che gritted his teeth, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead, but he didn't make any sound.
"Are you feeling better?" Su Wanqing asked.
"It's under control for now." Lin Che took a deep breath, "Let's go."
The two continued to move forward, and the black smoke from the factory in the distance was still swirling in the sky.
Su Wanqing turned on the system scan to find the safest route.
"The main road is full of zombies. System scans show there are over 3,000 zombies, and the density is extremely high."
Su Wanqing pointed to a dilapidated entrance on the left. "Lu Zhao marked this abandoned tunnel on the map. We can go around it."
Lin Che looked at the black hole-like entrance and frowned slightly: "This tunnel doesn't look very safe."
"It's better than charging directly into the zombie horde." Su Wanqing took out a flashlight, "Follow me closely."
There was a lot of debris and garbage piled up at the entrance of the tunnel. The two men carefully stepped over the obstacles and entered the tunnel.
The air was filled with a rotten smell, the walls were covered with moss, and the ground was thick with sewage.
"It's too humid here." Lin Che whispered, his fingers lightly touching the wall, a puzzled expression on his face. "And do you feel the ground shaking?"
Su Wanqing stopped and carefully felt the vibrations beneath her feet. Indeed, there was a faint, rhythmic vibration coming from the ground.
"Something's moving." Su Wanqing lowered her voice, "Stay alert."
The two continued to move forward. The tunnel became deeper and deeper, and the flashlight light began to reflect strange light and shadows on the damp walls.
Suddenly, Lin Che grabbed Su Wanqing's arm and pointed at the wall in front.
"what is that?"
Su Wanqing shone the flashlight in that direction, and the scene before her made her gasp.
The walls of the tunnel were covered with gray, giant organic matter that adhered to the concrete surface like tumors. Tiny veins were wriggling beneath the surface, emitting a faint fluorescence.
"These things look like some kind of parasite," Su Wanqing said, her voice filled with calm analysis. "Judging from their morphology, they're likely the trigger of the virus."
"Trigger body?" Lin Che asked in confusion.
"These things may be carriers used to activate or accelerate zombie mutations."
Su Wanqing reached out and took out a small sampler, carefully taking a sample from a parasite. "This is most likely not formed naturally, but was placed there by humans."
Just then, a low roar came from deep in the tunnel.
The voice was neither human nor like an ordinary zombie, but a more primitive and hoarse voice.
"Something's coming." Lin Che said vigilantly.
The two men quickly turned off their flashlights and hid in a sunken corner.
The fluorescent parasites in the tunnel provided a faint light source, enough for them to see what was ahead.
A group of huge humanoid creatures slowly walked out from the depths of the tunnel.
They are nearly two meters tall, with their bodies covered in a grayish-white bone shell, long and strong limbs, and their fingernails have turned into sharp claws.
The most disturbing thing is their eyes - not empty and lifeless like ordinary zombies, but shining with a cold light, full of wildness and wisdom.
"These are not ordinary zombies." Su Wanqing said softly, "They have mutated to a new stage."
"What are they searching for?" Lin Che noticed the behavioral patterns of these special zombies. "Look, they're operating in groups."
Indeed, these special zombies were divided into several teams, searching every corner of the tunnel in an orderly manner.
Their movements are coordinated and they can even communicate using simple body language.
"We have to find a way to get out of here." Su Wanqing said.
"Wait." Lin Che pointed at the waist of a special zombie. "Is that a walkie-talkie?"
Su Wanqing looked in the direction Lin Che pointed and saw that there was indeed a device similar to a walkie-talkie hanging on the belt of the special zombie.
"They may still retain some of the habits from their human period."
Su Wanqing speculated, "Or maybe someone's controlling it remotely." The two continued to observe, looking for an opportunity to break out. At this moment, the ultrasonic transmitter on Lin Che suddenly loosened and fell to the ground with a crisp clatter.
All the special zombies immediately turned towards them, letting out sharp roars.
"Run!" Su Wanqing shouted, and at the same time took out a small smoke bomb from her backpack and threw it hard at the group of zombies.
The smoke spread rapidly in the narrow tunnel, and the special zombies were briefly blocked from view.
Su Wanqing and Lin Che took the opportunity to run towards the exit.
"They're catching up!" Lin Che looked back and saw that several special zombies had already passed through the smoke and were chasing them at an astonishing speed.
"Start the ultrasound!" Su Wanqing ordered.
Lin Che immediately pressed the button on the ultrasonic transmitter. The piercing high-frequency sound waves echoed through the tunnel, slowing the movements of the special zombies noticeably, but the effect was not noticeable.
"They are very resistant to ultrasound!" Lin Che shouted.
A special zombie suddenly pounced from the side, its sharp claws pointing directly at Su Wanqing's throat.
Lin Che quickly stood in front and formed a water shield with his water ability.
The special zombie's claws were blocked by the water shield, but the powerful impact still knocked Lin Che against the wall.
Su Wanqing took the opportunity to pull out a gun, aimed at the special zombie's head, and fired three shots in a row.
The bullet penetrated the zombie's skull, but it did not fall down immediately. Instead, it staggered a few steps before collapsing to the ground with a bang.
"Their vitality is so strong!" said Su Wanqing.
More specialized zombies surged forward. Su Wanqing and Lin Che stood back to back, ready to face the attack.
At this moment, there was a sudden violent tremor from the top of the tunnel, and then large chunks of concrete began to fall from the ceiling.
"The tunnel is about to collapse!" Lin Che exclaimed.
Su Wanqing quickly pulled Lin Che away from the falling rocks. A huge piece of concrete smashed down on several special zombies, pinning them to the ground.
"I have an idea." Su Wanqing pointed at a fallen special zombie, "Get that walkie-talkie!"
Lin Che nodded and rushed towards the pinned zombie. Although it was unable to move, it still tried to grab Lin Che with its claws.
Lin Che nimbly dodged the attack and ripped the walkie-talkie off its waist.
"Let's go!" Su Wanqing shouted, and the two of them ran towards the exit.
The tunnel continued to collapse behind them, and the dust it raised covered the entire space.
They finally rushed out of the tunnel, and when they looked back, the entire tunnel entrance had been blocked by fallen rocks.
"It was too dangerous." Lin Che said while panting.
Su Wanqing took the intercom and examined it carefully. Although the intercom was worn out, it still worked.
She adjusted the channel a few times and suddenly heard a familiar voice.
".The fuse has been activated. Time is running out, evacuate immediately."
Although the signal was weak, Su Wanqing was sure that it was Lu Zhao's voice.
"It's Professor Lu Zhao!" Su Wanqing said to Lin Che, "He mentioned 'the fuse has been activated.' This could be some kind of code. Time is running out."
"Is he conducting any experiments in the factory?" Lin Che asked.
"I'm not sure, but it sounds like an emergency." Su Wanqing tried to reply, but the walkie-talkie could only receive and could not send signals.
"We have to get to the factory as soon as possible," Su Wanqing said firmly. "Professor Lu Zhao might be conducting some kind of anti-zombie experiment there. We have to help him."
"But it's surrounded by zombies. How can we get in?" Lin Che asked worriedly.
Su Wanqing looked at the factory in the distance and thought for a moment: "If the main road is blocked, then we can go underground.
The factory should have an underground piping system that we could sneak into.”
"Are you sure? Wasn't the tunnel experience just now dangerous enough?" Lin Che said with a wry smile.
"There's no choice." Su Wanqing took out a map and pointed to a location. "There's a drainage hole here that should lead to the underground of the factory. Let's go."
The two carefully avoided the zombies on the main road and headed towards the location pointed out by Su Wanqing.
As the sky gradually darkened, flashes of fire occasionally appeared in the black smoke from the distant factory, as if foreshadowing that some danger was brewing.
