Chapter 9 Trading Chips
The sobs rolling in Lin Che's throat were caught in the sound of heavy rain.
Su Wanqing hooked the edge of the vacuum packaging bag with her index finger and dangled it in the air. Dark red blood oozed out of the synthetic steak, and oil was seeping into the puddle.
The boy's Adam's apple couldn't help but slide up and down twice, and his eyelashes covered with mud and water trembled like dragonfly wings in a rainstorm.
"click"
The soft click of metal mechanisms opening blended with the thunder. Su Wanqing twisted her wrist, and the moment the Tang sword was pulled from the jade bracelet, it tore through the rain curtain. The rainwater accumulated on the blade's spine sprayed along the blood groove and splashed onto Lin Che's face.
The boy's pupils suddenly shrank and his back hit the water tank bracket with a dull sound.
"Did a cat bite your tongue?" She lifted the boy's jaw with the tip of her knife, drawing a trickle of blue blood. Su Wanqing then crushed the eyeballs of the zombie dog that had rolled to her feet with the tip of her boot and said, "Ask me to trade it for steak, or..." The blade suddenly slammed across his collarbone, "Feed it to the beasts as dog food."
Veins bulged on Lin Che's neck, and his wet silver hair stuck to his forehead, covering half of his face.
His left hand, hidden behind his back, quietly moved towards the tear in his tactical pants. As soon as his fingertips touched the hidden broken glass, the back of the knife hit the inside of his wrist heavily.
Su Wanqing sneered and stepped on his kneecap as he tried to curl it up with the sole of her boot.
"A little trick taught by the research institute?" She bent down, ripped open the boy's collar, and pulled out the micro-locator hidden in the bandage. "This thing should have been ineffective three hours ago."
Amid the crisp sound of metal components hitting the puddle, the shrill buzzing of sirens could be heard in the distance, only to be interrupted by thunder halfway.
Lin Che suddenly opened his mouth, and his canine teeth bit the blade, making a teeth-aching friction sound.
Su Wanqing grabbed his silver hair and slammed his head against the iron frame, causing the water tank to make a hollow sound.
"Can you speak French?" The tip of the knife poked the corner of the boy's mouth. Su Wanqing took out a moldy compressed biscuit and said, "Didn't your mentor teach you how to beg for food?"
Lin Che's blue blood dripped down his chin onto his tactical boots, corroding them into tiny white smoke.
Intermittent breath sounds came out of his throat, like a cat with its neck strangled.
Su Wanqing suddenly grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and pushed him toward the surface. Half a human finger floated in the splash of water as the boy struggled, and his bloodshot eyeballs were reflected in the water.
A holographic screen popped up from the jade bracelet: [Subject 0927's mental threshold has exceeded the critical point].
She counted the bubbles and lifted the other person up by his silver hair when he was about to suffocate.
The broken syllables of "Sister" mixed with French accent were interrupted by coughing, and the blue blood coughed up by Lin Che stained Su Wanqing's tactical gloves.
The blade grazed his earlobe and was nailed into the water tank bracket, and the shaved silver hair was blown by the wind and stuck to the corner of her mouth.
"Steak." The vacuum packaging bag slapped the boy's face. Su Wanqing pulled open his collar to check the chip location. "If you dare leave teeth marks, I'll pull out your tongue."
Lin Che suddenly stopped tearing the packaging with her teeth, and her vertical pupils shrank into lines as she stared at a point behind her.
Without even turning back, Su Wanqing threw out three steel nails. With a clang of metal, the mutant dog, impaled on its skull, fell into the drain, its rotting intestines spilling out onto the floor.
She stepped on the dog's head and pulled out her Tang sword, and black blood splattered onto the steak that Lin Che had just torn open.
"Eat." The sound of the knife back hitting the iron frame was like a death warrant. Su Wanqing took out a tube of mustard sauce and squeezed it on the moldy compressed biscuits. "Or I can help you stuff it in."
The boy's Adam's apple rolled violently, and when the synthetic meat stained with dog blood was stuffed into his mouth, his back teeth bit through the plastic bag.
The jade bracelet vibrated and popped up a data stream: [Obedience 41%].
Su Wanqing kicked away the dog's head that rolled to her feet, and lifted Lin Che's chin, which was covered with meat residue, with the tip of the knife. "Among the seven test subjects in the basement, which one can fight?"
The boy stopped chewing, and blue blood oozed out from his gums and flowed down mixed with meat.
"Number three. Can spit fire." Lin Che suddenly grabbed her trouser leg with a French accent and a swallowing sound. "Box number seven has explosives."
The sound of heavy rain pouring down on the iron water tank was like a death drumbeat. Su Wanqing crushed the ice crystals that had just formed on his fingertips, watching as the ice and blood seeped into the cracks in the ground. The handle of the knife stabbed him hard in the stomach. As the boy curled up and retched, Su Wanqing pulled out the surgical blade he had hidden in his sock.
"Don't you learn your lesson?" The metal sheet flew past the boy's earlobe and nailed to death two mutant cockroaches that crawled up the drainpipe.
Lin Che suddenly pounced on her and bit her wrist.
Su Wanqing grabbed his neck and slammed him against the water tank, leaving a human outline on the dented iron sheet.
The blue blood coughed up by the boy gathered into a stream on his chest, dripping into the stagnant water and emitting a strange fluorescent light.
"One last time." The Tang sword cleaved the charging mutant apart. Su Wanqing dragged the boy to the edge of the rooftop by his silver hair. "Call me sister, or feed the dogs."
The wind from the thirty-seventh floor blew up his shirt, which was torn into strips, and from downstairs came the roars of survivors fighting for food.
The boy's lips opened and closed several times, and his larynx made a crackling sound between Su Wanqing's fingers.
Her silver hair, wet with rain, brushed across the scar on her palm, and she uttered in French mixed with tears: "Sister, sister." The jade bracelet emitted a dazzling blue light, and a golden prompt box popped up on the holographic screen: [Master-Servant Contract Established].
The moment Su Wanqing let go, Lin Che slid down the water tank bracket and sat on the ground.
He clutched the half-eaten steak, his canine teeth leaving two rows of fine teeth marks on the synthetic meat.
The sound of glass breaking could be heard in the distance, and the thick smoke rising from the fire on the seventh floor was turned into gray mist by the heavy rain.
"Open your mouth." Su Wanqing stuffed a mustard-flavored compressed biscuit into his mouth and cut the bandage on the boy's back with a Tang knife. "If you dare to spit it out, I'll cut off two ounces of your flesh."
Lin Che's choked tears mixed with rainwater and flowed into her collar. Her Adam's apple rolled with difficulty as she swallowed the food, and her fingers left five scratches in the accumulated water.
The jade bracelet suddenly beeped, and the holographic map showed three red dots breaking through the fire on the seventh floor.
Su Wanqing pulled the boy up by his silver hair, and used the Tang sword to cut off the attacking mutated vines.
"Lead the way." The back of the knife slapped the chip on his lower back. "Find Subject Number Seven."
Lin Che stumbled and grabbed the rusty fire escape, not even noticing the rust cutting his palms.
He looked back at Su Wanqing with the eyes of a wounded puppy, and his pupils reflected the movement of Su Wanqing wiping the blade.
The heavy rain washed away the black blood on the Tang sword, and the accumulated water reflected the teardrop mole on her left eye with a cold light.
Lin Che's Adam's apple made him swallow hard under Su Wanqing's jaws, his silver hair soaked by the rain dripping down his cheeks.
His lips turned white from being pressed by the back of the knife, and the rain on his eyelashes mixed with the blood from the corners of his eyes, leaving two light red marks on his cheekbones.
The French accent of "Sister" stuck between the boy's teeth, and purple finger marks were left on his neck.
Su Wanqing suddenly let go, and he stumbled and hit the rusty barbed wire. The sound of mutant vines rubbing against metal came from behind him.
The knife light split the rain curtain, and the broken ends of three vines sprayed out smelly mucus.
Su Wanqing shook off the rotten flesh on the back of the knife and asked, "Did your tongue get cut off by the research institute?"
Lin Che curled up and coughed, his tactical boots scraping against the remains of the zombie dog in the puddle, and blue blood seeped into the water from between his fingers.
A red light suddenly exploded in the darkness.
The jade bracelet made his wrist bones numb from the vibration, and a golden frame popped up on the holographic screen in the rain curtain: [Master-Servant Contract Takes Effect].
