Chapter 134 Separate Research
Chapter 134 Separate Research
"Sean, you went to see Haskell yesterday. Did you tell him anything?"
Just as Li Xiaoen was training the model and writing code on his computer to improve it, Lucas suddenly came over and asked.
"I just simply explained that we have the same research strategy."
Li Xiaoen simply replied, "What's the problem?"
"There isn't a problem."
Lucas forced a smile and shook his head. "You must have said something to provoke Haskell. He's fighting back now, which is rare."
"is it?"
Li Xiaoen raised an eyebrow and didn't care. "This way, you can ask him more questions, right?"
"That's not what I wanted to say."
Lucas had no choice but to explain that Haskell's pride was directly reflected on his face. This junior freshman seemed friendly and harmonious on the surface, but he also had pride hidden in his bones, which seemed even stronger.
"Forget it, you guys are all so talented, there's no need for me, a guy who's still stuck in his research progress, to worry about it."
Shaking his head, Lucas waved his hand and was about to go back, but saw Axel and the other man approaching Li Xiaoen.
"Sean, take a look, what could be the problem with this bug?"
Axel took the laptop and placed it on the corner of Li Xiaoen's desk, pointing at the screen.
"Your model architecture does not match."
Li Xiaoen took a quick look and concluded, "The model's convolutional and fully connected layers..."
Li Xiaoen was talking eloquently with his surprisingly young face, and Axel stood beside him nodding repeatedly like a student. Lucas was about to turn around and go back, but he couldn't help but stand there in a daze when he saw this scene.
After briefly dealing with the two people's questions, Li Xiaoen couldn't help but ask when he saw Lucas looking at him with a dull look.
"what happened to you?"
"No, it's nothing."
Lucas shook his head dejectedly and was about to turn back when he seemed to think of something and turned back. "Sean, if I encounter any difficulties in my research in the future, I will come to you then."
"Of course you can."
Li Xiaoen nodded, but for a moment he couldn't tell what the expression on the other person's face meant.
The laboratory was very quiet. Even if students were communicating, they would lower their voices or go out to communicate. The only sounds in the room were the occasional sound of keyboards and faint sighs.
Occasionally looking over the model undergoing machine learning training, Li Xiaoen concentrated on writing perfect code, his mind completely immersed in it, and forgot about time until Lucas came to him again.
"Sean, Professor Sedgewick wants you to come to his office."
"now?"
Li Xiaoen came back to his senses and looked at the time. It was almost noon and time for school to be over.
Lucas nodded. "Of course, the professor doesn't like to be kept waiting."
"Okay, I'll go over now."
After taking a look at the laboratory computer where he was training, Li Xiaoen saved a back-up of his notebook, closed it, and then left.
"Professor Sedgewick, you wanted to see me?"
After knocking on the door and receiving a response from inside, Li Xiaoen walked into the office.
"Come, sit down."
Professor Sedgewick nodded and gestured to the chair in front of his desk.
"Sean, did you say anything to Haskell yesterday?" After Li Sean sat down, Professor Sedgewick couldn't help but smile strangely and asked.
Yesterday he asked Li Xiaoen to go find Haskell. He wanted to see what sparks would fly between the two of them. Today, seeing Haskell coming to the laboratory for the first time, and Li Xiaoen still not even looking at each other, he felt that he had gone too far.
"That is, his model had some problems, so he and I separated and conducted independent research."
Li Xiaoen nodded and replied that he would have to confess this to Professor Sedgewick sooner or later, and now that he asked, he might as well tell him.
"Haskell was previously in charge of this direction alone. I'm not worried about him being alone."
Professor Sedgewick pondered for a moment and said, "Sean, your foundation is relatively weak. Can you take on the development task of one person?"
"How about I transfer you to the same direction as the other students?"
"No, Professor, don't worry."
Li Xiaoen shook his head helplessly. As expected, even though the professor knew that he could answer Apple's test questions and his knowledge was at the level of a four-year undergraduate, he was still too immature in the professor's eyes when it came to developing research directions.
Without any hidden strength, and with the final astonishing idea, Li Xiaoen simply took out the USB flash drive he had for backup and pushed it in front of Professor Sedgewick.
"Professor, this is the prototype of the model I started building yesterday. You can take a look at it."
"..."
"Sean, you did this?"
This was just some low-level code, without any packaging or machine learning. However, as a leading figure in the field of algorithms, Professor Sedgewick could still discern clues from the code. His eyes widened. "Did you really accomplish this by yourself?"
"Yes, Professor."
Li Xiaoen nodded. "Of course, since I've seen Haskell's previous models, it's inevitable that some of his ideas and structures will be used as references."
I dare not say that this is entirely my own achievement, but I have referenced some good ideas I have seen. There is nothing wrong with admitting this, Li Xiaoen added frankly.
Professor Sedgewick said nothing more. He stared at the computer in surprise and quickly scanned through it. After a long while, he took a deep breath and leaned back in his chair.
"Sean, you've accomplished this in just one day. Even though it's just a simple prototype, you've really surprised me."
Professor Sedgewick looked at Li Xiaoen with a strange expression. "Xiaoen, judging from the knowledge and structure, your knowledge level in this field is at least close to that of a graduate student."
"You went back and studied on your own again? Are you progressing so quickly?"
Professor Sedgewick couldn't help but look at Li Xiaoen suspiciously. It's not like he had never seen a genius before, but this was the first time he had seen someone like Li Xiaoen.
“It took some time.”
Apart from three years of ordinary study to complete the undergraduate study progress, he reached the level of a graduate student in just one year of focused study. Li Xiaoen was quite surprised and simply nodded without saying much.
"Haha...relax, you're so smart, I can't wait to be happy."
Seeing that Li Xiaoen was reluctant to talk, Professor Sedgewick smiled and said something reassuringly, nodding solemnly. "Since you want to do your own research, then go ahead and do it. If you have any difficulties, feel free to come to me. I'll support you!"
"Thank you, Professor."
Li Xiaoen smiled and nodded. Seeing that Professor Sedgewick was so happy at the moment, he decided to strike while the iron was hot.
"Professor, after hearing what you said, I suddenly remembered something and I want to tell you about it now."
"Oh?"
If such a talented student is simply taught knowledge, the bond will not be strong. A deeper and inseparable bond must permeate the lives of both parties, Professor Sedgewick nodded quickly and asked.
"You said, as long as I can help..."
