Chapter 39 Gun License
Chapter 39 Gun License
The Enforcement Bureau is very close to the tavern. You can reach the back street of the Enforcement Bureau by going through the alley diagonally opposite Lucky Whitebeard. The Enforcement Bureau is the tallest and largest building in the area, so it's hard to mistake it for something else.
Roland circled around to the main entrance of the law enforcement agency, but before he could speak, he was recognized by a law enforcement officer who was about to leave. He remembered the officer; it was Hughes' young partner, whom he had met once last night.
“Mr. Roland, my name is Tommy. The director is waiting for you. I’ll take you up.” Tommy yawned, looking tired, but his attitude was very enthusiastic.
"Thank you for your help, Tommy. Is it going to take all night?" Roland said politely.
“Yes, the higher-ups will arrive this afternoon. Before that, we must organize the case files, conduct on-site analysis, autopsy, and identity investigation…” Tommy walked through the lobby and led Roland up the stairs, encountering few people along the way.
Roland immediately understood. It seemed that all that was missing was his statement and testimony as the person involved. Being allowed to rest for half a night was already considered a privilege.
"Have the identities of those two corpses been investigated?" The two corpse puppets looked unfamiliar; they shouldn't be locals.
"Haha, that's a confidential business matter," Tommy replied with a laugh.
"I know."
The two walked up to the third floor and arrived at the door of the room on the south side of the third floor, where the sign read "Director's Office".
"We're here." Tommy had just raised his hand when a deep male voice came from inside the house, "Please come in."
Tommy pushed open the door, took a step back, and gestured for Roland to go in alone, while calling out, "Director, Mr. Roland has arrived."
The room was large, but not sparsely furnished: filing cabinets, a table and chairs, a fireplace, and a bed. The desk faced the door, and Director Mark was looking through documents with his back to the window.
"Come in. Tommy, call Fanny over for me." Chief Mark looked up at Roland, but the sunlight behind him was too strong to see his expression.
"Yes, Director." Tommy hurried away.
Roland went in, closed the door behind him, and nodded slightly to Director Mark: "Good morning, Director Mark."
“Have a seat,” Chief Mark said, gesturing to the chair opposite him. He glanced behind Roland a few times. “French isn’t here?”
"Huh? Is that necessary?" Roland asked, puzzled.
“Of course, he was a great help and a key player in the fight. I’d like to treat him to dinner.” Director Mark said with an air of self-righteousness.
Roland was both amused and exasperated. Director Mark actually referred to Fletcher as "he" with a very serious expression.
"He's here." He casually changed the way he addressed him, waved his hand, and a huge wolf head emerged from his chest. It placed its paw on his chest and transformed into a giant wolf, landing lightly on the ground.
This scene startled Director Mark. He wasn't surprised by Fletcher's appearance, but rather he didn't understand how it appeared or what its situation was.
"Is he a spirit?"
"Yes."
"Summoning without any rituals or items?" Director Mark asked in surprise. Summoning spirit creatures is troublesome for extraordinary individuals; to summon them with a wave of the hand is clearly illogical.
"Uh...no, it's always been on me." Roland told the truth. Since it had already been exposed, there was no point in hiding this detail.
“That’s alright.” Director Mark nodded slightly. “However, we should also be careful. Some spirit creatures can corrupt humans or objects, whether passively or actively. Only extraordinary beings can resist this kind of contamination.”
“I understand, thank you for the reminder, Director Mark.”
"Was there another person named Kiri who was injured last night? Was he sent back to the spirit world?"
"Yes." He mentioned this yesterday when he briefly described the process.
"Hmm..." Director Mark hesitated for a long time before speaking somewhat embarrassedly, "Roland, making a contract with a spirit creature puts a lot of pressure on the soul, and it's rare to hear of an ordinary person being able to make a contract with a spirit creature. Would you consider letting me have one? Name your price..."
"Ugh—" Before Roland could speak, Frederick suddenly stood up, his claws gripping the desk, baring his teeth in fury.
"..." Roland spread his hands and pursed his lips, the meaning of which was self-evident.
"Knock knock knock..." There was a sudden knock on the door.
Roland quickly reassured Fletcher, returning the creature to his body to avoid any misunderstanding. "Please come in." Director Mark coughed lightly, composed himself, as if nothing had happened.
A female law enforcement officer entered the room. She appeared to be in her thirties, with fair skin, deep-set features, and a tall figure. At first glance, she could be mistaken for a man.
"This is Roland, the person involved in yesterday's case. Roland, this is Deputy Commissioner Fanny," Commissioner Mark introduced.
After exchanging greetings, the two officially began the case-handling process. Roland recounted the events of the previous day in detail, while Fanny took notes.
He only mentioned that the two wolves attacked the black coffin, then claimed he fell into a coma and remembered nothing. When he woke up, he found Kiri seriously injured, and then called for Hughes and Julia's help.
This argument is very convincing. Director Mark and others have deduced that the extraordinary individual belongs to the Mourning Path, so the side effect of forgetting memories is quite reasonable.
“The facts are basically clear, Roland. You acted in self-defense, so don’t feel guilty,” Fanny said softly after taking the statement. Her voice was soft and feminine, a stark contrast to her physique.
"I don't have any burdens, I'm just too tired and can't sleep well. I always feel like danger is everywhere," Roland sighed. He hasn't had a moment's peace since he transmigrated here.
"I've already taught those outsiders a lesson, and nothing like this will ever happen again," Director Mark said firmly, his face serious.
Roland smiled and nodded, but didn't take it to heart. Director Mark wasn't necessarily a bad person, but his actions weren't exactly upright; when there was no conflict of interest, things were naturally amicable.
“Roland, if you remember anything or make any new discoveries, feel free to come to the Enforcement Bureau to see me anytime.” After saying that, Chief Mark handed him a small black notebook. “Go and get the permit processed.”
Roland took it and was stunned for a moment. The cover clearly read "Guarantee for Arms". He unfolded it and found Roland's information inside.
"Thank you, Director Mark."
"You're welcome. Are you learning pharmaceutical manufacturing from Ms. Julia?" Director Mark asked casually.
"Uh... that's right."
"Then you must study hard..." Director Mark said a few words of encouragement before letting the two leave.
Roland followed Fanny downstairs to the second floor to apply for a gun license. In addition to getting it stamped and signed, they also needed to provide the gun's serial number. Fortunately, he had his revolver with him, so he didn't have to make another trip.
Stepping out of the law enforcement office, a gust of cold wind sent a chill down his spine. It would be a lie to say he felt no pressure entering such a place for the first time.
He carefully put his gun license away, and as soon as he turned around, he saw a fat figure standing not far away.
"Roland." The man wore a bear-head hat, was round-bodied, and walked like a big, clumsy bear.
"Mayor Orge, is there anything I can help you with?" Roland was surprised. The two didn't have much interaction, and the place where they met most often was the sales home.
“I went to your house but couldn’t find you. I guessed you were here. Did Mark give you any trouble?” Olger walked up to Roland, his chubby face beaming with a friendly smile.
“No, he even got me a gun license,” Roland laughed. Ever since he learned that this fat man had worked so hard to maintain the orphanage every year, he found it hard to dislike that face anymore.
“This person looks respectable, but he’s incredibly frivolous. Don’t trust him easily. If you need anything, come to me.” Orge’s tone was very serious.
There are many bad people in Ice Rivertown, but Roland is definitely not one of them. Born in the North, he has devoted himself to helping orphans for ten years. If he is not a good person, then what is?
Everyone is willing to be friends with someone who doesn't borrow money from you. If that person suddenly stands out, then you absolutely must befriend them.
"Thank you, Mayor Olge."
"No need to be polite, we're all family. You go ahead and do your work. I need to talk to Mark about something."
"it is good."
As the portly figure entered the hall, Roland realized for the first time the changes brought about by the restructuring of the judicial system. The mayor's rank was higher than that of the head of the law enforcement agency, but he still had to personally visit the mayor when there was a problem.
