Chapter 1: The Immortal Prisoner

The moonlight is like water, gently falling on the gauze-like mist among the mountains, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

At the foot of the mountains, in the quiet little mountain village, as the smoke from the fireworks gradually dissipated, the lights in most houses had been turned off. Only a few houses still had lights on, and the lively sounds of playing cards and mahjong could be heard from inside.

In one of the two-story buildings, a middle school student named Fang Zheng was concentrating on playing a sandbox survival and construction game called MC, also known as "Minecraft".

"Uh uh uh……"

"boom!"

The roars of zombies and the explosions of creepers can be heard from the screen.

(You failed!)

(Player trying to swim in lava)
"Ah! My enchanted diamond armor!"

Fang Zheng slapped his thigh in frustration as he watched the character he controlled being swallowed by the lava and burned to death before he could climb out. The enchanted diamond armor he had worked so hard to obtain also fell into the lava.

In survival mode, he mined for several hours before finally saving up this set of diamond enchanted armor.

However, when he was mining in the next new mine, he was attacked by zombies. While fighting the zombies, he was knocked back by the explosion shockwave of the creeper that came up silently, and fell into the lava in the mine and was burned to death.

Can this be tolerated?
He switched to creative mode without hesitation and quickly made himself a brand new set of diamond armor, muttering, "I'm not cheating. I'm just taking back what I deserve..."

After playing for a while, he noticed that the occasional sounds of firecrackers and fireworks outside had disappeared. He looked at the time and it was already 2 a.m.

He stretched, closed the tablet in his hand, washed up briefly, and lay down on the bed, yawning: "MC is a really good way to kill time. I've been playing for hours without realizing it. I need to go to bed. I have to go out for drinks tomorrow."

As sleepiness came over him, he fell into a deep sleep.

"Humph……"

"Hum hum……"

In the darkness, the humming sound like a blocked nose came from all directions. This was a sound that every MC player was very familiar with. It was the cry of the villagers, or NPCs that the players jokingly called Hanging Face Men.

This familiar sound that kept ringing made the confused consciousness in the darkness wonder: "Is my tablet not turned off?"

However, before he could regain consciousness, the sky suddenly brightened.

Awakened in the darkness, Fang Zheng stared blankly at the square pixel world in front of him.

Houses made of brown pixel blocks, green grass blocks, hanging-faced villagers walking around and making unpleasant humming sounds, and tall iron golems passing by.

Looking up at the sky, a large glowing cube was hanging in the sky, and cube pixel clouds were floating in the sky.

There was also the inventory bar below the viewing angle and the settings bar above the viewing angle. Everything was so familiar that it made the still confused Fang Zheng feel bewildered.

"I...am I dreaming?"

Standing in the village, Fang Zheng, a pixel man with a simple body also made up of blocks and pixels, just stood there blankly, with no expression on his face made up of pixels.

He subconsciously waved his hands quickly, and with the sound of "dong dong dong", the blocks of the villagers' houses on the side were shattered one by one in the air.

"Creative mode?"

"Am I having a lucid dream?"

Fang Zheng recalled the description of so-called lucid dreaming that he had seen on the Internet.

Fang Zheng seemed very excited about this new experience.

He immediately opened his inventory, excited to have a good time in this rare lucid dream.

Although the perspective in front of you is the same as the MC game screen seen on mobile phones and tablets, there are no control keys and it is controlled only by consciousness. The actions of the block man are much more convenient than touch screen control.

In just over ten minutes, the block man who could sprint in the air in creative mode ran up and down in the sky, destroyed the village with a bucket of lava, ignited the forest with flint, and used lava and water buckets to build a tower as high as the limit of the height of the blocks.

After a while, he used soul sand and wither skulls to create a dozen withering withers and fought against hundreds of sound-seeking guards. Unconsciously, 20 minutes had passed. The cube sun of the Mc world rose and set, plunging into darkness, and the cube moon rose and set, ushering in light.

In the game MC, a day only lasts 20 minutes in the real world.

At the end of the day, Fang Zheng stopped placing blocks.

He realized something was wrong.

"Even if it's a lucid dream as mentioned online, it can't be this lucid, right?"

The block's head turned left and right, looking at the things in this MC block pixel world. He looked at the operating logic of various blocks and paid attention to the details.

Somewhat panicked, he remained motionless, thinking and waiting, trying to make himself fall asleep again in this lucid dream and then wake up again.

But time passed slowly, and in the increasingly intense panic, Fang Zheng watched the square sun and moon in the sky rotate more than 20 times, at least for seven or eight hours, but he still did not feel tired at all, nor did he show any signs of falling asleep again.

He began to panic and tried various methods.

He tried to sense his sleeping body, but found in despair that apart from vision and hearing, he had lost everything...

Oh, and by the way, there's a slight vibration when smashing blocks.

He tried to do other actions with this block body, but he couldn't do anything except the actions that the character in the MC game had.

He could not wave his hands, open his mouth, lie down, get on his stomach, bend over, or even bend his arms or knees.

He tried to build a bed and sleep on it when night fell to see if he could actually sleep, but he discovered in despair that as his perspective alternated between dark and light, the night was skipped directly. He did not feel tired at all and was completely unable to sleep.

He tried to kill the Ender Dragon to pass the level, but in a panic he built a portal to the End, and after killing the Ender Dragon to pass the level, still nothing happened.

He frantically fumbled around for the inventory and settings in his view, found the survival mode option in the settings, switched to survival mode, jumped off the cliff, jumped into the lava, and fell into the void. All he saw were the prompts (You failed) and the options (Rebirth).

He tried to fly high in the sky with his elytra to see if he could see the unrefreshed area at the edge of the horizon.

In a state of anxiety, he spent more than a dozen blocks of time and effort to build a simple ender pearl cannon using blocks such as TNT and pistons, trying to use the ender pearl to teleport beyond the map boundary.

But even at the end of the field of vision, in all areas that the Ender Pearl Cannon can teleport to, it is still an endless land constructed of blocks...

After several days of effort, hundreds of rotations of the cube sun and moon, and countless failed attempts to leave this so-called "lucid dream", Fang Zheng gave up.

He stood there restlessly, his eyes fixed on the rotation of the sun and moon in the sky, and continued to wait...

Although he is not a hardcore player and only plays it occasionally in his spare time, Fang Zheng still understands the common sense of MC.

20 minutes in the real world is equivalent to one day in MC, and 24 hours in the real world corresponds to 72 days in the MC game.

One day, two days, three days... As time passed, the sun and moon in the cube continued to rise and set. After spending more than a week or two in the real world, Fang Zheng finally gave up.

He understood a bitter reality.

"Or, I traveled through time..."

"Or, someone took my brain out and turned it into a brain in a vat..."

In the darkness, Fang Zheng cried out in despair as he looked at this dull world made up of blocks and pixels and listened to the unpleasant howls of zombies that spawned from areas with insufficient light.

However, no matter how desperately and sadly he cried, this blocky pixel body and the blocky head made of pixels remained expressionless.

He couldn't even shed a tear made of pixels...

He was trapped, trapped in this hopeless cage of pixels.
