Chapter 31 The Unknown and the Known
Chapter 31 The Unknown and the Known
As the bizarre scenes began to fade, Ruger didn't even know his name. It seemed as if no one had called him in any of the flashing images. Perhaps the emphasis of his memories varied from time to time and from occasion to occasion. Until the last, fleeting image of his childhood, he vaguely heard a gentle female voice softly calling him "Hayat," and that was the end of it all. Most of the fragments had been lost, or perhaps they weren't the focus of his memory, and therefore didn't exist in the first place.
Ruger decided to erect a stone in front of the grave of this ill-tempered donor when he passed by there again on his return trip.
After experiencing these strange things, he had more questions.
Could the last sentence of that biography be true? Or was it merely the biographer's drunken fantasy? Thinking carefully, in the scattered and erratic memories of this person, who might have been named Hayat, there really wasn't anything clearly earthbound; never in his entire life had he seen a clear, sunny sky.
Only wizards can walk the earth—
What does that mean? If we take it literally, aren't these wizard apprentices exploring the underground world, not specifically coming underground to complete some mission from some master, but are they also holed up here like a little dog-headed man, living in this endless darkness?
These fifth-level wizard apprentices, guys whose mental strength has reached the limit, are they really not from the earth?
Is the road to the ground so difficult to walk on?
At this moment, he discovered that his ignorance of magic knowledge might not be a big deal, and the underground world might bring him even greater surprises.
He ate some of the meatworms in the storage bag to make more space.
Put a few books and magic stones in first.
Then he picked and chose among the pile of things, and ended up throwing away most of them because he couldn't use them or take them away, and he also had to leave some space for the next recipient.
Thinking of the next donor who was waiting to be buried, he remembered the broken light gray translucent crystal.
He didn't know if every wizard apprentice would have this thing after death. He felt that it must be a special case for that person, but there was no need to guess too much. He would soon go to the next heritage site and the answer would be revealed.
After consuming that unknown substance, he felt his mental strength increase slightly, though not significantly, and certainly not enough to reach the level of a Level 2 wizard apprentice. He wouldn't engage in exhausting meditation exercises or spell tests in this desolate wilderness.
He took out the light body technique and looked at it, then decided to rest for a while.
After all, I was interrupted last time and didn’t get a good rest at all.
"I'm counting on you this time. You'll be the sentry. I think you're quite clever, a pretty clever bug!"
He half-lying against the stone wall, patted the breeding bag at his waist. The little insects that had not yet hatched from their eggs swayed slightly in response to his patting, as if they really understood.
"Work hard. You're not a child anymore and can take care of the family. You love eating eggs, right? Next time I'll catch that big snake for you to eat."
The culture bag vibrates violently.
He smiled, turned slightly to the side, hugged the long stick in his arms, and slowly fell asleep.
This time there were no dreams and no interruptions.
The accumulation of fatigue over the past few days has become an invisible pillow. No matter how I lie down or how I roll, I can sleep soundly.
When he woke up, he ate a bottle of shaved ice and half a boiled worm from his collection.
Pave a good mood for your new journey.
Another target is also in this small hole area.
He carried his long stick and set off again.
The person who'd said they knew something about the city the little buggers were heading to was still very concerned. After all, so many strange wizard apprentices had gathered right in his area. Unfortunately, reading those memory fragments hadn't yielded any clues. Perhaps they'd lost it, or perhaps the person was lying. He figured the little crying buggers must have already entered the city, and these people were destined to have made a wasted trip and return empty-handed.
Traveling in the small cave area is much more relaxing than in an open place. Although there are holes as large as a building in the small cave area, it is still incomparable to the feeling of being in the wilderness outside, which seems like an independent little world and is full of dangers.
He looked at the crystal clock when he set out. It took him more than a day to walk, and at most half a day to reach the final stop of this journey.
For more than a day, he continued to travel without sleep using magic.
The joy of seeing the inheritance soon was making his steps lighter.
"A wizard apprentice from Heita?"
When Ruger turned a corner, he saw three people sitting there to rest, and at the same time, a smiling voice came over.
This situation made him stand there for a while, not daring to move.
He collected himself and glanced at his robes. It seemed his attire had misled him. He calmly observed the three men. Their attire didn't seem to have any particular uniformity. One of the sturdy figures looked vaguely familiar to him; it seemed he was the one chasing the giant snake that day. There were also two young men of ordinary build, and it was one of them who had enthusiastically approached Ruger.
"Come and rest, little one, don't be nervous." The man said again.
Ruger was wearing a hood, and his entire face was almost shrouded in shadow, but it was impossible to cover the dog-headed man's mouth perfectly. Even in insufficient light, some clues could still be seen upon closer inspection.
"Low-level apprentice, it's too dangerous to go alone. You can follow us later." said the enthusiastic man.
Boom! The silent man nearby raised his hand and created a blazing bonfire. The sound almost drowned out the enthusiastic man's voice.
Ruger hesitated, nodded to the enthusiastic man to express his gratitude, then gritted his teeth and walked towards the makeshift campsite formed by the campfire with his short legs.
The tall and strong man took a glance and suddenly said, "Leave here and go back to Heita. That's what you should do."
"Baonte, don't be so harsh. Not all of Heita's apprentices are so disgusting." The enthusiastic man said with a smile.
The burly Baonte was merciless: "A low-level apprentice came here only to die. You just wanted him to go there to explore the way. And you, sitting there and acquiescing, are just like him."
"He might be in a worse situation if he goes back. Dangerous missions are opportunities for people like them," the man who had been silent the entire time, fiddling with the campfire without even looking up, suddenly spoke up. "Judging from his appearance, he probably crawled out of a test subject. Some of the apprentices in the Black Tower are like this, though not as thoroughly transformed as him."
"Kobolds?" The enthusiastic man was also surprised. "It's actually a kobold. Your mentor is really crazy."
The strong man Baonte ignored this topic.
"Those big bugs should all be dead, right? Maybe we don't have to get together," said Baonte.
"can."
"Hey, I wanted this little guy to join, but you guys want to disband?"
The man who had been fiddling with the bonfire stopped talking, took a step forward, walked into the fire and disappeared.
The enthusiastic man looked around, and seemed not to want to stay alone with Baonte, so he turned and left. With every step he took, his figure seemed to flicker in the darkness.
For a moment, only Ruger, the strong man Baonte, and the bonfire in the middle were left.
"Come and sit down," said Baonte.
