Chapter 9 The Salamanca Family
"Crash-"

Warm water poured down from the shower head above his head, and Rorschach rubbed a part of his body vigorously with a washcloth in his hand.

Perhaps when facing difficulties, Rorschach can always maintain a tough attitude, but sometimes, when faced with a girl's enthusiasm, even if he knows that the other party has bad intentions, he will always unconsciously let down his guard.

Just as he had said in the Gallagher bathroom not long ago, Karen was a slutty bitch who loved collecting stamps. Many people even called her "a must-see attraction in the South Side," but he still let his guard down.

Oh my god, who knows how many germs are hidden in this woman’s mouth!

"Shet!"

Rorschach turned off the faucet in annoyance, wiped his body, and changed into a set of loose beach pants.

He took out a can of beer from the refrigerator, opened it and drank it all in one gulp, then crushed the empty can and threw it into the trash can with precision.

The light on the ceiling was a little dim, and under its reflection, the whole room seemed to have an extra layer of nostalgia.

It was a small, two-bedroom bungalow with obvious signs of renovation. Creamy white wallpaper covered the tiny cracks in the walls, and a thick blanket covered the floor, muffling any noise from the worn floorboards below.

Everything is full of traces of time. This place has been with Rorschach for more than 20 years since he could remember.

But since he started middle school, he was the only one living in this house.

Rorschach walked to the fireplace and carefully wiped the photo frame on it with his handkerchief. The photo showed a middle-aged woman with a few wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and a kind smile that made people feel good when they saw her.

There are few things in this world that Rorschach cherishes, and the photo before him is undoubtedly the most important one.

"Good evening, Mary."

Rorschach gave the woman in the photo his only genuine smile in the past few days.

The woman in the photo is his mother in this world, who died in an accident more than ten years ago.

As for the father?

Rorschach had no recollection of this. After becoming a baby with the memories of his previous life, his impression was that his mother was his only relative from beginning to end.

"Father" is a very unfamiliar word to him, and he has no expectations for this word.

Speaking of which, although Rorschach himself hates black people very much, at first glance, he actually has some similarities with those black people hanging out on the streets of the South District.

After wiping the photo frame clean, Rorschach sat on the sofa and turned on the TV. There was a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox tonight.

Just as he took out another dozen beers from the refrigerator and prepared to drink while watching, the doorbell rang at an inopportune time, accompanied by the low shouts of his Irish brother.

Rorschach raised his eyebrows slightly. The two brothers came to his house late at night, most likely because they had a clue about what they wanted to do.

And the fact was indeed as he expected.

Connor nodded excitedly as he entered, almost ready to high-five. Murphy followed closely behind, his arms wrapped around a tightly closed cardboard box.

"Haha, Boss, you'll never guess how easy it was for us to find it!"

Connor plopped down on the sofa with a familiar air, one hand resting on the back edge, and began to talk. "My two brothers have been to every bar and homeless gathering place in the South Side these past two days, compiling all the information we gathered. Do you know the result, Rorschach?"

The man deliberately lowered his voice, his expression becoming serious. "Seventy-eight children! In the past six months, a total of seventy-eight children have disappeared in the South District! The oldest is only thirteen years old, and the youngest can't even walk!"

Rorschach's pupils shrank suddenly when he heard this, and he was obviously completely shocked by the news.

But he still looked at Murphy for confirmation. Compared with his brother's exaggerated personality, Murphy was more stable.

However, facing Rorschach's sharp gaze, Murphy just nodded with a heavy face, as if he had not yet recovered from the news.

"Fuck!" Rorschach couldn't help but curse.

He had spent the past six months at headquarters solving murders and hadn't paid much attention to the South Side. Unexpectedly, after being demoted to patrolman, he discovered that the bastard Gus had murdered so many innocent children.

"Most of them are girls, but about a third are boys." Murphy said in a deep voice, "The vast majority of them either have parents in prison or come from drug-addicted families who are unable to raise children. Logically, these children should be sent to welfare centers to be adopted, but for some reason they all disappeared." "Fuck, do I even need to guess? Someone in the welfare center must have been bribed by Gus. No, not only the welfare center, but also the police station. Those police officers in the South District are all fucking black cops!"

Connor cursed indignantly, "Contacting the police these days is like playing Russian roulette. You never know whose side they're on!"

Rorschach sat silently on the sofa and did not deny Connor's words. After all, what the boy said was actually true. Many police officers based in the South District had long been bribed by various drug trafficking groups or gangs. Almost all the police officers found here were corrupt police officers who accepted bribes.

Only seventy-eight children?!
Even if some of the children disappeared for reasons unrelated to Gus, the number was still too large.

What on earth is this guy trying to do by kidnapping so many children?
Transport? Organ trafficking? Selling to the rich and powerful?

"By the way, Rorschach, come and take a look at this." Connor pointed to the cardboard box on the coffee table that Murphy had brought in.

The box looked to be about half a cubic meter in size, with a very mottled surface, and was placed heavily in front of Rorschach's eyes.

"Um"

Looking at the appearance of the cardboard box and what the Connor brothers had just said, Rorschach suddenly had a bad feeling, and the line from Brad Pitt in "Seven" suddenly emerged in his mind.

What’s in the box, what’s in the fucking box?!

Rorschach wrinkled his nose, pointed at the two of them, and said seriously, "Let me warn you, if the bodies of those innocent children were inside, I would beat you both up first to vent my anger."

"A corpse?" Connor was stunned, then quickly shook his head and took the initiative to open the cardboard box.

Rorschach looked up and breathed a sigh of relief. All that was inside were stuffed toys and some stained children's clothes.

Murphy duly explained, "We found these when we were tracking one of Gus's men in a dry-cleaning factory in the suburbs. We didn't dare follow him in, but we did find these in the trash cans around us."

"Think about it, Rorschach," Connor added. "It's not unusual for a dry-cleaning factory to have dirty clothes, but what about all those dolls? That must be the secret place where that bastard Gus imprisoned the children. He first detained the children in one place, and then transported them elsewhere by other means. Damn it, if Murphy hadn't stopped me, and I had no weapons, I would have gone in and blown those bastards' heads off!"

"."

Rorschach automatically ignored the bragging at the end of the boy's speech. He looked around at the Irish brothers in surprise.

To be honest, when Rorschach first gave them the task of collecting information on missing children, he was just taking it one shot and didn't have any hope for them at all.

But the brothers' performance really surprised him. Not only did they find out all the missing children in just two days, they might even have found the factory where Gus imprisoned the children.

This extremely high efficiency made Rorschach look at them both with new eyes.

“You guys did a great job.”

Rorschach got up from the sofa, walked to a counter with his back to them, opened the drawer and took out a stack of cash from the compartment inside.

"This is your reward. Don't refuse it. You've already put yourself in danger while investigating this information. You deserve this money. Just think of it as an informant fee."

After hearing this, Connor and Murphy, who were still about to refuse, looked at each other, then smiled embarrassedly and put the stack of bills into their pockets.

"What's the matter, Boss Rorschach?" Connor asked impatiently after receiving the money. "Are you going to go it alone this time, or are you going to call your colleagues from the police station? The most important thing is, you can't forget about us two brothers!"

"That's right, you must bring us along for this good deed of a murderer!" Murphy patted his chest indignantly.

Rorschach smiled, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and tossed a few to them. After lighting them, he spoke frankly, "Given Gus's cautious nature, there must be at least a dozen gunmen stationed in that factory. It wouldn't be difficult for me to storm in alone, but there are an unknown number of children inside, and there's a high chance I might accidentally injure them. The risk is simply too great."

"As for the police? With the number of corrupt police officers in the police station right now, if we report this, Gus will get the news within an hour and transfer the people."

"We have to find a way to keep Gus busy. It would be best if he could transfer most of the gunmen in the factory away. That way, things will become much easier."

The Irish brothers looked at each other, then asked in unison, "What's the solution?"

Rorschach slowly exhaled a puff of smoke, narrowed his eyes and said, "Salamanca Family!"
