Chapter 351 Take action
My younger sister went back home soon after her holiday, and Yan Hui had basically moved all her things out of her house.
To be honest, there's really not much in the house. Apart from some items for the funeral hall, appliances, and wooden furniture, Yan Hui doesn't plan to leave anything else.
He carried his grandfather's shovel out the door, intending to deliver it to his second uncle's yard, but then he looked back at it one last time.
The house where he has lived for 15 years is about to disappear, and in its place will be a six-story modern building.
"Mr. Yan, shall we start work?" Several foremen asked when they saw Yan Hui carrying out a shovel.
"Tomorrow, let's not rush it today." Yan Hui shook his head.
Before the road construction even started, on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, Yan Hui had already contacted a construction company and transported a lot of materials and machinery to the village entrance. Because he was building a six-story building and was quite particular about the quality of construction, excavators and cranes arrived early on, and various types of stone, cement, and timber were piled up in a large area of open space in the village. Later, Yan Hui would also have concrete pump trucks come over.
At first, the villagers thought it was something for road construction, but when they saw the Yan family moving, they realized they were going to build their own house.
There are many self-built houses like this in rural areas, but never on such a large scale. What is this?
This costs money! All of this costs money!
Yan Hui pulled his father aside and, together with the construction team, carefully planned out the next steps.
"We'll start digging the foundation tomorrow. We'll start digging directly from this line. This old house will also have to be demolished." Yan Hui discussed the plan with his father and the construction team leader at the door of his house.
"Here? Isn't this digging right up to this person's doorstep?" The construction foreman was stunned.
“This is our family’s homestead, no problem, just dig it up.” Yan Hui didn’t care at all.
"What if a conflict breaks out?" The captain was a little flustered.
If you dig the foundation along this line, not only will you create a deep pit right in front of your neighbor's house, but you will also destroy the concrete anti-slip slope in front of their house.
"I'm just worried that the other side won't cause a conflict. Don't worry, this isn't your concern. I've already spoken with your boss, Mr. Zhu," Yan Hui said with a smile.
"Understood, understood." The captain nodded immediately.
That evening, Yan Hui took his bedding and returned to the old house alone. He lay down on the earthen bed and quietly rested.
His father was supposed to come and keep him company, but Yan Hui said it wasn't necessary. All the beds and other belongings in the house had been moved away, and there was only one earthen bed left; it would be too cramped for two people to sleep in it.
Yan Hui lay alone, looking out the window, and could see the stars in the sky. Because it was so quiet, the stars seemed to be able to make sounds.
That night, Yan Hui slept very soundly until dawn. After waking up, he stretched, then tidied up his blankets and took them to his second uncle's house.
After finishing breakfast, Yan Hui called the construction foreman to start work!
With the crackling of firecrackers, construction officially began. Two excavators entered the construction site simultaneously, one to demolish the old house and the other to dig the foundation on the perimeter.
Yan Hui and his father watched from the side, and his grandmother also watched. She would go back to rest for a while and then come out to watch again after she had rested.
Grandma still prefers to live at home. She really doesn't like living in Jinan. It's too difficult for her to learn Mandarin at her age. She even has trouble chatting in Jinan and can only play with Mom.
Once the house in the village is built, Yan Hui plans to leave his parents and grandmother in their hometown so they can come over during the two or three months when the weather in Jinan is nice.
Because it was still during the Spring Festival, there were many people in the village, and many came to watch the excitement. There were especially many children in the village who gathered around. After all, excavators are a rare sight for children, and they wouldn't get bored watching them all day.
With many children and onlookers, Yan Hui took out a lot of candy and cigarettes to distribute to everyone. Building a house is a joyous occasion, so giving out candy is only natural.
Yan Hui was very generous, distributing cigarettes without considering price or quantity. Almost all of the village's one or two hundred onlookers received a generous share. Afterward, Yan Hui distributed most of the cigarettes he had brought back, leaving him with only about 5000 yuan worth.
The crowd watched with great interest, and soon someone noticed something amiss: Yan Hui had dug up the road in front of the Xiao family's house, and judging by the size of the excavator, it was digging a very deep foundation!
In this way, the Xiao family will not be able to leave their house at all. There will be a ditch right outside their door, and once it is built, it will become a courtyard wall!
Upon seeing this, the Xiao family members immediately ran out, shouting loudly to stop the excavator from operating, but the excavator operator paid no attention to any of that. He had already heard about what was going on and continued doing what he was doing.
Left with no other option, the eldest son of the Xiao family jumped directly into the dug pit and reached out to stop the excavator.
The excavator operator looked at Yan Hui and asked for his opinion.
Yan Hui waved his hand, signaling to continue.
Now, all the villagers stopped to leave; everyone wanted to see what was going on.
Outsiders shouldn't get involved in neighborhood disputes within the village; this is a survival wisdom of the village. Only when conflicts arise in other villages will everyone rush in.
Seeing this, the excavator operator continued construction, pushing the shovel forward even when it was almost hitting someone. This terrified the eldest son of the Xiao family, who scrambled out of the pit.
After he came out, he saw Yan Hui and walked over: "Yan Hui, what are you doing? Can't you see that's our front door?"
"If I remember correctly, the area I'm working on is our family's homestead, right?" Yan Hui asked casually.
"The cement in front of my house is our property! You're just looking for trouble!" After Boss Xiao finished speaking, several of his brothers followed him over.
"What, you want to take on me three by one? I'm ready for that." Yan Hui glanced at his father, signaling everyone to step aside.
If he actually agreed to let three men beat one person in front of the whole village, he would lose all face. But Boss Xiao wasn't stupid. He snorted and said, "Yan Hui, you haven't been back for years. You probably don't know your own limitations anymore. Don't think that you can get everyone to help you just by offering a few cigarettes! Let me tell you, I'm prepared too. Today, if I don't let you start construction, you can't start construction!"
With that, Old Master Xiao shouted, "Everyone from the Xiao family, come out!"
With a shout from Boss Xiao, both inside and outside the crowd,
Yan Hui's view was blocked, but he didn't seem flustered. He knew that these people were people whom Boss Xiao had recently plotted with and privately promised benefits to; they were prepared. It was impossible for him to get these people who offered cigarettes to help him, but Yan Hui remained calm and told the construction team, "Continue construction; they won't dare to make a move."
Upon hearing this, the construction team continued with their work. Old Master Xiao, enraged, led a few men to stop one of the workers and slapped him hard across the face.
"Everyone, watch closely," Yan Hui said, seeing the situation. "He struck first, so don't blame me. Mr. Zhu, let everyone come over here."
After Yan Hui finished speaking, General Manager Zhu clapped his hands in the crowd. Soon, the crowd surged around, and countless people ran out from the alley entrance and residential houses, densely surrounding the area. Moreover, more and more people came out from even further away.
"Take control of every single one of the troublemakers from the Xiao family and send them here." Yan Hui's expression remained unchanged. "They may hit people, but we won't."
