Chapter 20 Killing to the Top
Chapter 20 Killing to the Top
When Eric opened his eyes, a figure next to him knelt down and stared at him. He was too tired to say a word. The other person just stared at him blankly with trembling lips, and finally suddenly shouted "Ah".
Although he was extremely tired, Eric was still frightened and temporarily perked up.
"Miss Sophie? ...Is the holy water coming?"
Sophie looked at him carefully again and realized that the blood on his face and body did not seem to be his own.
"...Sophie?" On the other side, the tired head nun also spoke.
"Ah?...Yeah! It's almost here! I've brought it all here!"
"That's good." Eric gritted his teeth, supporting his aching body. He stood up and glanced at the people around him. "What are you all doing here? Go get busy with your own things."
The crowd then slowly dispersed.
"Give me a hand." Eric hooked up with a guard from the City Lord's Mansion and walked out leaning on his body.
Sophie was still a little dazed as she watched him walk away. It took her a long time to come back to her senses. She turned around and asked the head nun, "What... is going on?"
Alena glanced at her and pursed her dry lips, "Pull me up first."
"oh oh!"
Sophie helped the head sister up and, like the guard had helped Eric, let her put her arm around her shoulders and walked out of the mine.
As she walked, she belatedly realized that apart from being overworked, both the head nun and Mr. Eric seemed to be fine.
And judging from what the head nun told her, this was indeed the case.
The situation became complicated after going deep underground. Sometimes they were active and sometimes they became passive. They fought without any scruples. They killed for a whole day before coming out and were naturally exhausted.
The blood on Eric's body belonged to an unlucky villager. Instead of being attacked by the undead, the villager was struck on the head by falling rubble from the mines. He had apparently lost a lot of blood, but the head nun managed to save him in time with a divine spell cast by the head nun.
Eric collapsed from exhaustion after carrying the unfortunate guy out of the mine, and not long after, Sophie returned to the mine.
"So that's how it is. I was scared to death..."
Sophie whispered, Alena was so tired that she barely had the energy to look at her, she just lowered her head and let her hold her.
When she returned to the camp, several village women immediately surrounded her and took the title of head nun from her. Their enthusiasm made the latter, who was used to the ups and downs of life, a little restrained.
"Just let me go back to the tent and rest for a while..."
"Hey, how can that be? I'm tired after a day, so of course I have to eat something first."
Alena wanted to go back to the tent to lie down but failed, and was finally helped to the campfire. Broth, barbecued meat, and steaming bread were already placed beside her.
Eric was sitting opposite, his armor removed, his clothes still stained with blood, his face clean, but it looked more like it had been wiped with a towel, even the expression on his face was wiped away, and he just stared blankly at the flames.
"I should have brought two maids from home... At least if you really treated me like a young master, your actions would be gentler."
Alena couldn't help but smile when she heard him muttering softly. Her appetite was also aroused, and she suddenly felt some strength in her extremely tired body.
Pursing her dry lips, she scooped up the broth and took a few sips intermittently. She picked up a piece of soft toasted bread, pinched it with her fingertips and tore off a small piece, then slowly began to eat.
After a while, she heard movement on the other side of the fire. She looked up and saw Eric, who had regained some strength, picking up the barbecue and starting to bite into it.
People were coming and going in the camp, most of them were villagers who came to help, and few of those who participated in the battle were still able to move.
The two ate the food in silence, silently feeling the heat integrating into their bodies and gradually regenerating into physical strength.
"Head Sister." Sophie had just sent Alena to the camp and was called away. She came over now.
"how's it going?"
Alena suddenly remembered that the person who called Sophie away seemed to be talking about the holy water. She had planned to take a break and then go over to deal with it, but she forgot about it in a blink of an eye.
"The burning has already begun." Sophie pointed toward the mine.
Alena turned around and found that there was flames behind her.
Holy water dissipates easily when exposed to the air and does not affect combustion, but it also does not help with combustion. The fire burns so big because there is enough fuel.
She looked for a while, the firelight reflected the diffuse black smoke, and those that dissipated in the wind might be the bodies of the undead she had killed with her own hands during the day.
"Did everything go well today?" Alena looked at the little nun again. "Did you encounter any problems?"
"No." Sophie smiled at her shyly, "I just waited a little long."
She actually wanted to say that she felt a sense of accomplishment for having accomplished this, but it was too embarrassing to express this feeling in person.
"This batch of holy water has been used up, and I asked you to get more." Alena said.
Although the head nun didn't say much, continuing to let her do this was a kind of recognition, and Sophie's face showed an even brighter smile.
"Uh-huh!"
"You should eat something too."
Sophie sat down, her eyes looking across at her intentionally or unintentionally. Alena looked over there and saw that the young master of the City Lord's Mansion seemed to be staring at the flames rising from the mine, a little absent-minded.
At one point, he suddenly lowered his gaze and met hers. The head sister lowered her eyes to look at the red-hot wood. Amidst the crackling sound, a voice came from the other side: "The fire is burning fiercely. At this rate, we'll be able to clear out the undead in a day or two at most."
She then looked back at Eric and said, but not in agreement: "This is too tiring."
"Well..." Eric had no choice but to deny it.
He had been swinging his sword all day, killing countless corpses, so much so that his entire right arm now felt sore and swollen.
"It would be fine if it were just normal progress, but unexpected things always happen one after another." He took a breath and shook his head slightly. "It's unexpected."
Alena looked at him again, not quite understanding what he meant by unexpected.
In that kind of environment, she was not surprised by anything that happened, and these soldiers should not be surprised either.
In other words, accidents are part of the battle they are constantly experiencing.
Eric easily understood the look in her eyes, but it was hard to explain.
He now lives in a real world, not a game.
Over the past two days, Eric had forgotten how many times he had reminded himself of this, but when he encountered an unexpected situation, he couldn't help but be surprised:
Is there any situation in online games where when you are halfway through defeating a small boss, another small boss will come to kill you with a group of minions?
But this is the real world, and this kind of thing just keeps happening.
Today, due to various unexpected events, we have made progress beyond our expectations.
The battles continued in the cave day and night, and if that unlucky villager hadn't been hit on the head by a falling rock and was bleeding, needing medical treatment, they might have continued to advance in such a state of killing. The battle itself was not difficult. Even a small BOSS was just a matter of a few more blows in front of a group of warriors starting from level three. The continuous killing brought an indescribable sense of excitement, pushing them to go deeper, as if they were possessed by an evil spirit.
It was not until a sudden accident suddenly pulled them back that the huge fatigue suddenly caught up with them and almost defeated them.
Eric turned his head to look at the campfire on the other side. The tired guards of the City Lord's Mansion were all gathered there. Leslie, who worked the hardest, had a numb look on his face. He probably dropped more barbecue crumbs than he swallowed.
Although his own situation wasn't much better.
After taking a look, Eric looked away and found that he had not eaten much, but he no longer had much appetite.
He still forced himself to eat some more.
His body was numb from exhaustion, but his mind was clear enough to realize that sleeping without eating wouldn't restore much strength.
Besides that, he wanted to take a hot bath.
When a village woman passed by, Eric stopped her and told her what he needed. She immediately agreed and went back to boil water.
"Sister Alena, don't you need a bath?" Sophie asked quietly.
"Yes." Alena couldn't remember how many times she was soaked in sweat today. Although it has dried up now, she still feels an uncomfortable sticky feeling all over her body when she thinks about it.
"I'll arrange it." Sophie stood up, the enthusiasm brought by doing something personally still taking effect.
Alena was too tired to move, so she certainly wouldn't object, but she wasn't in a hurry either. "Let's go after we finish eating."
"It's okay, I've almost finished eating."
Watching Sophie leave the camp and chase after the village woman who had just left, Alena thought that it was not only those who directly participated in the battle who gained something today.
Across the campfire, Eric was still silently stuffing food into his mouth, and Alena continued eating as well, but they both stopped at almost the same time.
The fire in the mines lit up the sky above, making it appear bright.
Although most of the corpses were not completely rotten, it would take some time to burn them all, and the number was astonishingly large. Eric estimated that it would take at least four or five days to burn them.
Fortunately, when choosing the cremation site, special attention was paid to the wind direction, so the ashes will basically not fall here or in the town below.
"Let's go down to the mine later tomorrow so everyone can rest for a while."
Alena looked at Eric to confirm that he was talking to her and nodded to indicate that she had no objection.
He stood up again and went to another bonfire and started communicating with the guards of the City Lord's Mansion.
Not long after, Sophie returned to the camp and said the hot water was ready and we could go take a shower. She also informed Eric.
The two of them came to a corner of the town below. They both wanted to take a bath, but it was impossible for them to do so together, and it was not good to leave anyone waiting. Sophie found another place for the nun, which was right next to them.
Entering the simple but clean low house, Eric found a large bucket of hot water inside, which he had no idea how much effort it took to fill. Eric felt around and found he didn't have a single copper coin, so he decided to ask the captain of the guards to pay him after returning to the camp.
He took off his coat and found that the door was not closed. Just as he reached the door, he suddenly saw a faint shadow reflected on the window of the house next door, and it seemed that the person was taking off his clothes.
Ordinary people mostly use candles for lighting in their homes, which is average in effect, but people are reluctant to use more. The flames flicker and the figures of people sway, making them very blurry, but the outlines are generally visible.
After removing the headscarf, her long hair was loose, and without the cover of the robe, her body showed some straight or round curves behind her, and in front of her...
Poof, the candle was blown out.
"..."
Eric no longer had the energy to roll his eyes. He moved his feet, which had been stagnant for a long time, closed the door, and sat in the bathtub.
