Chapter 28 Classic Trap
Chapter 28 Classic Trap
The next morning, Eric woke up when he heard some movement in the camp. He crawled out of his tent, and just then, a figure emerged from a larger tent on the other side. The mist was hazy, and the two glanced at each other in the morning light, then nodded in greeting.
"Good morning, Sister Head."
"Good morning, Mr. Eric."
There was actually nothing to do if you get up too early. When the two of them washed up, most people in the camp had not yet gotten up, and the people coming and going were all villagers who came to help.
But there is nothing to do in the morning, and there is no need for so many people to prepare breakfast. Some of them are just here to get the wages, and they dare to say that they have done the work just by showing their faces.
However, such villagers were a minority after all, so Eric didn't bother to care about it. He just took a piece of bread to fill his stomach, then rode his horse and took a look around.
"Good morning, Master Eric."
"Hello."
"You get up so early, little count. I heard that the nobles in the city sleep during the day and get up at night. They just eat, drink and have fun all day without doing any work. You are really different from ordinary nobles..."
"Because I am not yet a master."
After riding around for a while and chatting with the villagers he met occasionally, Eric stopped on a high slope after going around for most of the circle, looking at the mining village below and the vast wilderness outside.
Black smoke still billowed from the mine, the last trace left by the undead who burned from day to night and from night to day.
There weren't many people in the town, as those who got up early had all come to the camp on the high slopes.
The sun gradually rises, the morning light covers the sky, the mist in the wilderness gradually fades, and a few light clouds float in the sky. It looks like today will be a good day.
"A good sign..."
Eric looked at the dazzling red sun in the east and said to himself, "If it rains, there will be no place to hold the party tonight."
The horse under him suddenly shook its head, exhaled through its nose, and paced back and forth.
"Okay, go back."
When we went back down, Leslie and the other guards had already gotten up, and the camp became more lively.
When they were about to go underground again, the mine was crowded with villagers, all of whom were looking forward to their return today.
Eric attracted the most attention. He felt he should say something, but after looking around, he couldn't think of how to start, so he raised the sword in his hand.
Cheers immediately broke out in the mine.
"lets go."
With torches lit, the group stepped into the dark mine again and headed deep into the ground.
"Are we there yet?"
When they passed the first fork in the road, Sophie asked the head nun beside her.
If nothing unexpected happens, this should be their last time coming down. Unable to resist Sophie's nagging, Alena finally agreed to Sophie's request to come down and take a look, on the condition that she could not go too deep, let alone join the battle, and she had to go back if she was asked to.
"We're just getting started. It's still early." Eric answered the head nun's question without turning around. "This is where we fought on the first day."
Sophie looked at the head sister and quickly followed him. "How far is it?"
Eric made a rough estimate and said, "The distance we just walked should be about ten times greater."
Sophie was stunned. "It's so far..."
"It's underground, so it seems far away, but it's actually not that far away. You still have time to turn back now."
"……don't want."
After some hesitation, she was determined to follow. "The head nun said that facing darkness and evil is also a way to strengthen one's faith."
Turning around and seeing her face full of forced determination, Eric laughed, "You're just here to gain experience, right?"
"What...experience?" Sophie asked, bewildered.
"Nothing, don't worry about it."
As they went deeper along the huge descending spiral, the team would stop at the fork in the road from time to time to check the simple sealing measures at the entrance of the fork to ensure that there were no undead hiding inside.
Just like the previous two days, villagers pulling trailers followed the team, carrying the remaining corpses in the mine. When they were ready for battle, Sophie had to follow them back to the surface - or at least stay away from them.
"This mine is really deep. Are we already several hundred meters underground now?"
There were rock walls on all sides and above and below, and the oppressive feeling of not being able to see the sun made Sophie inevitably nervous. She couldn't help but think about how disastrous it would be if the mine tunnel above her head suddenly collapsed.
"It's not that deep. Although the mine tunnel is long, the slope is not steep." The little nun's uneasiness was written all over her face. Eric looked at her and estimated that she could not hold on for too long, so he prepared to let her leave with the first group of villagers returning to the surface.
Looking at the occasional black bloodstains on the ground and the rock faces on either side, Sophie sighed softly, "There's no escape, whether up or down. How desperate must those plague victims who were trapped and died here two hundred years ago must have been..."
Eric was stunned for a moment, then looked at her again. After a brief silence, he said, "That's right. That's why we go deep underground to clear out the undead, not only to protect the living villagers outside the mine, but also to end the suffering of these cursed souls and let them rest in peace."
"Yes!" Sophie seemed to have shouldered the same mission. She straightened her back and her eyes became more determined.
"Just protect yourself now." Seeing that her eyes were determined as if she was going to fight the necromancer underground alone, Alena still reminded her.
"I got it……"
After walking deeper into the mine for a while, Leslie, who was walking in front, suddenly raised his hand and the team immediately stopped.
"Are we finally there?" Sophie asked, but her voice quickly dropped as she saw the serious expressions on the faces of the people ahead. Alena took her hand and squeezed it to reassure her, then glanced back at the mine tunnel behind her, wondering if it was time to let her return.
"We pretty much ended our exploration here yesterday. According to the young master, this place is not far from where the necromancer is hiding."
Leslie looked at Eric and said, "Because the passage here is quite open, I mean, the team should stay here and wait, and I will go ahead to explore the way."
"I'm familiar with the terrain. I'll go in with you," Eric said, stopping the captain of the guards who was about to say something. He then looked at the other guards and said, "You stay here and protect the two Holy City envoys and the villagers."
"Yes!"
After making the arrangements, Eric and Leslie immediately took action, heading forward one after the other.
As he went deeper, Eric recalled the final boss's methods. "Besides summoning skeletons, that necromancer is also quite skilled in curses. He doesn't have any immediately fatal methods, but being controlled by him is no different from death. Be sure to avoid his spells during the fight."
"I understand, Master. You reminded me yesterday," Leslie answered him, his attention never slacking.
"You should also remember the other point I mentioned."
"Yes……"
Eric looked at him and said, "Don't hesitate. If you hesitate, I will really die."
The captain of the guards nodded solemnly, "Yes!"
The two continued to explore the unknown area, and for Eric, what he saw was exactly the same as what he remembered, and the more he looked, the more familiar it became.
"Stop," he called to Leslie.
The captain of the guards stopped and turned to look at him. Eric looked at the ground in the aisle in front of him, took a few steps forward, and poked the ground with his sword.
"There's a trap here."
Letting Leslie hold him, Eric took a step forward, his feet not changing at all.
He leaned forward again, slowly shifting his center of gravity forward.
Click!
Without any warning, an area in the middle of the passage, more than one meter wide and two meters long, suddenly cracked and collapsed, revealing a pit that was four or five meters deep. The bottom was full of spikes, and the gaps were filled with bones.
Leslie held the young master tightly, cold sweat running down his forehead, while the latter was still sighing.
"Tsk tsk tsk, this is the first time I've seen such a classic pit trap in my life..."
After regaining his balance, Eric looked under the trap. More than two hundred years had passed, but the spikes under the ground still shone with a metallic luster and a faint blue color.
"If you fall from such a height, even if you're not killed by those spikes, you'll be poisoned to death if you even scratch your skin. You'll die instantly. Even a Holy Priest can't save you."
The more Leslie looked, the more frightened he became. "If I had come here alone to explore the way, I would have definitely fallen."
"So walk slowly from now on. I've memorized most of the traps. Let's eliminate them one by one."
The chief guard wiped his sweat and said, "Yes, Master..."
The two of them bypassed the spike trap and continued to grope forward.
Even though Eric had died repeatedly on this road of death in front of the BOSS room, he couldn't remember where the traps were, but at least he still remembered the types of traps and how to trigger them.
With extreme vigilance, he groped his way forward step by step, relying on Leslie's cooperation to eliminate the traps one by one or leave conspicuous marks.
"Get down, get down lower."
Leslie squatted down without hesitation. Eric, who was also squatting in front of him, stretched out his sword and stabbed the ground.
Whoosh!Whoosh!Whoosh!
Three arrows shot from the dark mine tunnel ahead, almost at no particular order, flying over the two men's heads.
"The crossbow trap, or should I call it the pedal trap? It's classic, right?"
Leslie didn't know what kind of classic the young master was talking about. He only knew that if he had come here alone, he would have been shot into a hedgehog... No, he couldn't have gotten here alone and would have died long ago.
"Don't get up yet."
Eric warned, stabbing the ground with his sword again, attracting three more arrows flying by at high speed.
He continued to poke, and the arrow continued to fly.
"It's been several rounds, is it ever going to end..." Eric muttered, and poked a few more times, but finally there was no movement.
The two men then stood up and walked forward for a while. The mine tunnel turned and there were three conspicuous holes on the rock wall. The crossbow arrows were shot from there.
Running his fingertips along the edge of the hole, Leslie sighed, "If they're capable of setting up such a trap, why don't they just dig through the mountain and escape from here?"
"Maybe he didn't set the trap after all." Eric's voice came from the side. "Why don't you just go and ask him?"
He threw a ball of illumination forward, and Leslie turned his head and found that the mine had reached the end.
The end of the sight was a hall. A skinny figure was sitting on a rock seat in the middle of the hall, with his head lowered facing this side.
As if it sensed his gaze, it raised its head, its eyes gleaming with blue flames.
