Chapter 56: Dark Ages
After being frightened by the saint in an exaggerated way, Eric returned to his own house and subconsciously avoided Alena who came to greet him.

He had no feelings for Sophie, but he would occasionally let his instincts take over when it came to Alena, who was more mature in every way and more in line with his mental age.

"...Your Highness?"

Alena was very sensitive to the changes in his attitude, and her own situation made her unable to help but think too much.

"Did Her Highness the Saint say anything? ...About me."

"No." Eric came back to his senses and shook his head. "The Saint only gave a few instructions and didn't object. I'm just not used to you staying in my room yet."

The "unfaithful" Alena had no place to stay in the convent and could only live in his side room - other rooms. There were several rooms for personal servants in the side room, which was larger than her original residence.

"I will try my best to stay in my room and not disturb Your Highness." Alena lowered her head.

"That would be even harder for me to get used to. Let's just accept it." Eric waved his hand and walked inside. "You've been here all day?"

Alena followed and nodded in agreement. A nun's life was nothing more than prayer and practice. For her, it was just a change of place.

Only a few people in the monastery knew that Alena had abandoned her loyalty to the saint and turned to Eric. She didn't want to explain too much to others, so she simply didn't show up unless it was absolutely necessary.

"Have you decided which class you want to teach me?" Eric asked. He had just taken off his coat when Alena took it and hung it up for him.

"I want to truly help His Highness," Alena said. "And what I've been best at over the years is the affairs of the Saint's Monastery itself, so I want to go to the Saint's Monastery and learn the work processes of the ladies-in-waiting. Although..."

"Although this was your original plan," Eric said.

Alena pursed her lips, "Yes..."

"It's okay, I believe you." Eric smiled.

He knew that he couldn't stay in the monastery forever, but when he was away, someone had to take care of the affairs here. If he wanted to find someone trustworthy and capable, then Alena was the most suitable candidate.

The operation of the Holy House has its own set of procedures, which basically do not change with the replacement of the Holy Maiden. Alena's main role is to convey his true will.

"But the Saint will definitely not allow me to slack off on this matter," Eric continued, "so I still have to go there myself. You can come with me when the time comes. I'll let the Saint's House know about this first. After that, you can go there anytime to observe and learn in my name."

He considered...

Alena bowed deeply, expressing only gratitude.

"Yes, Your Highness."

The next morning, it was Alena who woke Eric up for class - she got up very early and woke up to the sound of the monastery bells.

"There's no need for you to get up early now," Eric yawned. "Or are you used to it?"

"I'm used to it..."

The nuns have morning prayers, although they only recite scriptures in the scripture room. However, they have to get up when they hear the first bell, and appear in the scripture room when the second bell rings, otherwise they will be punished.

"The Middle Ages turned people into ghosts... and turned me into a high school student."

The quasi-saint lady muttered something, washed up, had her meal, and went to her class.

After a while, Sophie was called to the classroom with a confused look on her face, and sat down next to Eric in a daze.

"Your Highness... am I attending class?"

"Didn't I tell you yesterday?" Of course Eric wouldn't just drag her to class without notifying her. When he mentioned it to Sophie yesterday, she agreed excitedly.

"I thought..." Sophie looked at the expressionless nun preaching on the stage, her voice gradually lowered, like the buzz of a mosquito, "I thought you were joking..."

"It's too late to regret now," Eric whispered, standing up and bowing to Ymir. "This is from Sophie, my classmate. Her Highness the Saint has given her permission."

Ymir returned the greeting, said nothing, nodded to Sophie, and then began the class. The latter's cheeks flushed red, and after a while she stood up suddenly and saluted her.

This lesson continues from yesterday. It talks about how the vibrant and prosperous human tribe collapsed and fell apart under the iron hoof of the demons.

"Before the Gaia Era, in the extreme north of the continent, the demons, who were born together with humans, had already developed their own tribes just like humans.

"The demons are highly adaptable to their environment, and the harsh environment fosters stronger internal cohesion within the demon tribes. Even before humans set foot in the frigid snowy regions of the north, the demons had already risen to prominence. Of course, demons are naturally warlike, and demons from different tribes will engage in battle upon encountering each other...

"Due to factors such as land and religion, there were also many conflicts between the demons and humans who first came into contact. However, the scale of these conflicts was still relatively small at this time: humans had no intention of moving north, and the scattered demon tribes were unable to occupy the lands of the larger human population."

Eric listened with great interest, and his resentment about getting up early to attend classes had long been forgotten. Sophie, who was standing next to him, was only now beginning to digest the fact that she was accompanying the quasi-saint to class.

She looked at Eric, whose attention was on the lecturing nun on the stage;

She looked at Ymir again, who glanced at her while teaching, and she quickly lowered her head to avoid her gaze.

Yesterday, His Highness Eric said that if she didn't want to practice, she could come over and slack off... But, there was no chance for her to slack off at all!

Sophie couldn't help but look at Eric again, but he just stared upwards.

"In 85 BC of the Gaia Era, Digot unified the demon tribes and was known as the Demon King.

"In 79 BC of the Gaia Era, the Demon King Digot led his army southward and directly wiped out more than a dozen human tribes, including the Kal, Toyaba, and Latu tribes. He continued his advance, intending to annihilate all of humanity.

"In 76 BC of the Gaia Era, the hero Weil united the remaining human tribes to resist the demons and established the first human kingdom, Resai, in the south of the present-day empire.

"In 72 BC, the demon army conquered the largest city in Resay. Weir was killed in battle, Resay was destroyed, and humanity... no, all creatures on the continent entered a dark age ruled by the demons."

Having said this, Ymir stopped, clasped his hands together, and prayed silently.

Eric remained silent with a serious expression.

The nun mourned the sacrifices of mankind at the beginning of the Dark Ages, and he could foresee that a similar disaster would befall this land again in a few years, and the casualties might be even worse than those of thousands of years ago - the scale of human cities now was far beyond that of the tribal period.

What really made him feel suffocated was that he gradually realized that even if the saint let him go now, he would be powerless to stop this war.

On the other side of the war, there are not just a few powerful demons, but countless individuals tied together, a cruel group that directs all their anger and aggression towards humans.

After praying for a moment, Ymir spoke again.

"In the first year of the Gaial calendar, the Holy Prophet Raphael received divine revelation in the wilderness of Lasir and founded the Church with his ten disciples..."

"Wait a minute," Eric interrupted her. "From the beginning of the Dark Ages to the founding of the Church, there are no records of the seventy-plus years in between?"

"It is recorded, Your Highness."

Ymir looked at him. "However, this period of history is too dark. The struggle between humans and other races against the demons did not truly begin to show any light until the founding of the Church. As is customary, this period of history will not be discussed in detail, as it does not hold much significance."

"It's meaningless? The church will really..."

He really knows how to flatter himself.

Eric took a breath. "If it had no meaning, this history wouldn't have been recorded. Let's tell it. I believe in the wisdom of our ancestors."

"Yes, Your Highness."

Ymir nodded and turned back the timeline.

"70 years before the Gaia calendar, the demon king slaughtered all human tribes in the area he controlled and collected their souls."
