Chapter 7: Valais Town
Eric's innate instinct and the vigilance he had trained since childhood allowed him to react almost instantly and draw his sword to block the attack from the dark.

when!
His arms were suddenly numb from the shock, and he was almost knocked off his horse by the force. Unable to stop the small pieces of debris flew towards him.

Eric held on tightly with his sword and could see clearly that the attacker's weapon was a rusty pickaxe, and it was rust that hit his face.

Behind the pickaxe is a highly decayed face.

The little skin that was left seemed to have been stuck on, falling off in chunks, revealing the white bones. One eyeball was hanging out of the frame, twitching irregularly, while the other was a complete hole, with worms crawling in and out.

Immortal!
It was the first time that Eric saw an undead creature with his own eyes. He was horrified and did not dare to relax his hands. The sword in his right hand continued to hold the heavy pickaxe, and the torch in his left hand suddenly stabbed forward, but unexpectedly it went directly into the creature's chest.

"Uh... ah..."

With a hiss, the flames were almost extinguished, and a hoarse roar came out of the rotten throat, which was disgusting.

Eric immediately followed up with a kick, kicking the rotten body away.

"Master, are you okay?"

He only felt a flash before his eyes, and the captain of the guards who was in the front position of the team just now appeared in front of him in an instant, and cut the undead into two pieces with one sword.

The remaining guards had also stopped, quickly dismounted, and surrounded him, guarding him and the carriage next to him, while keeping alert to the surroundings.

"I am fine."

Eric was just thankful that he reacted quickly enough to block the initial attack, otherwise even the captain of the guards' ghostly flash-like movements wouldn't have been able to save him.

"This is the lowest level of undead."

Leslie kicked the lifeless body on the ground and spat, "Although its strength has been enhanced compared to when it was alive, its body is very fragile. It will rot on its own without anyone touching it."

Eric also took a quick look, but he didn't know much about it. After all, the undead in the game were basically low-level monsters, so there was really no need to understand them in detail.

Suddenly, a large ball of light appeared behind him. He turned around and saw the head nun in the carriage clasping her hands together, and a ball of light floated in front of her.

She pushed her right hand upwards, and the ball of light passed through the roof of the car, continued to float and rise, and stopped in the air three or four meters high, illuminating the surroundings.

"Lighting..."

A fairly basic yet versatile spell.

With their field of vision greatly expanded, Leslie and the guards scanned the surroundings and searched carefully for a while, but found nothing.

"Master, we have to..."

He was about to say something to Eric, but he found that the latter was a little absent-minded. "What's wrong?"

"……fine."

Looking at the swordsman's professional experience bar which had grown a little bit, and the monk's professional experience bar which had remained unchanged, Eric held back from sighing out loud.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

But now was not the time to care about these things, so he quickly adjusted his mood and looked around.

This lone undead creature in the wild must have escaped from the mine, and no other monsters were seen around.

"Don't stop, Vale is right ahead, let's hurry over there," said Eric.

"Yes!"

Leslie had just spoken of his intention. He called on the guards to regroup and prepare to speed up to the town of Valais.

Before leaving, Sister Alena got out of the car and came to the body of the undead with its head and body separated, and silently prayed a few words.

As the prayers went on, wisps of black air emerged from the corpse and dissipated into the night.

Without the support of this force, the corpse quickly decayed and dissipated until only a rotten skeleton remained.

Alena lowered her hand and sighed softly, "His soul has broken free."

The state of the undead is essentially a curse. If it is not purified, the soul that cannot gain freedom will turn into a vengeful spirit, which is another danger.

Setting off again, it didn't take long for the group to reach the brightly lit town of Valais.

Several militiamen armed with simple weapons were guarding the entrance. After recognizing the flag of the City Lord's Mansion, they all looked relieved.

Eric rode forward and asked one of the middle-aged men who looked like the leader of the group:

"I'm Eric Kimino, Lord Edgar's nephew. He ordered me to come and solve the problem here. What's the situation now?"

"Great! We're saved now... Uh, what's the current situation? The undead have escaped from the mine... Is that right?"

"Speak more carefully." Leslie, who was parked a little behind Eric, said impatiently.

So several militiamen chattered on and on about the specific situation in Valais and the whole story of the discovery of the undead.

A few days ago, it rained heavily here.

After the weather cleared up, someone discovered that the fence surrounding the abandoned mine in the north of the town had been washed away by heavy rain.

Driven by curiosity, several young villagers entered the mine that had been closed for many years through the gap.

They found a lot of usable supplies in the mine and moved them all back. Other villagers also flocked in. After searching for a while without any results, they set their sights on the closed mine entrance.

"...And then, you opened the entrance and discovered the undead inside?"

"We didn't open it, Eddie and his brothers did!" One of the militiamen was a little excited. "They insisted that the real good stuff was inside..."

This was not what Eric wanted to hear. He raised his hand to stop him and continued, "And then?" "And then..."

Yesterday afternoon, the Eddie brothers brought along two or three young men and, after much effort, finally broke open the heavily sealed entrance to the mine.

Then, Eddie, who pushed his companions aside and rushed in first, was gouged from the top of his head to his chin by a rusty pickaxe.

When he said this, the militiaman was shaking all over, as if he had witnessed the horrific scene with his own eyes.

Eric understood, "So you are one of those people."

"I...ah...I have advised them..."

Eddie's brother wanted to save him, but soon suffered the same fate. The others were all terrified and fled the mine without looking back.

It was not until they heard that other villagers had been attacked by the undead that they remembered to report the incident to the clergy of the local church.

Several monks with little fighting ability gathered together and barely eliminated a few undead that broke into the town, but they did not dare to go deep into the mine. They could only find a way to block the gap in the fence and stop the undead that subsequently emerged from the mine. They also sent people to quickly report the matter to the Lamair Monastery.

"Are you sure all the undead who escaped from the mine have been eliminated?" Eric asked.

"I don't know..." The militiaman looked around blankly at his companions. "I heard it from someone."

"They were all beaten to death. Their bodies were piled together, doused with holy water, and then burned." Another militiaman said, but his tone was not so certain.

"At least we encountered an undead on the way here," Eric said.

It was pretty much as he guessed, because the intervention was made early and the situation hadn't developed to the same level of severity as in the previous life's closed beta test where the mountains and plains were filled with undead.

Eric thought for a moment and looked at the captain of the guards beside him. "Send someone around the town to check if there are any fish that have slipped through the net. The rest of you, come with me to the mines. We will set up camp there."

Leslie was a little surprised to hear that they were going to set up camp directly at the mine, but he immediately understood his intention and quickly agreed, "Yes!"

"Walker, Laman, you two go ride around the town a few times and keep your eyes peeled."

"Yes!"

The two guards then left the team and began patrolling from the entrance of the town.

The remaining people, led by the militia, headed straight for the abandoned mine north of the town.

The hurried sound of horse hooves attracted many people to open their doors and windows to look out. After hearing that it was people from the City Lord's Mansion, they all breathed a sigh of relief in surprise.

"Are we going there too?"

In the carriage, Sophie looked at the fire outside, feeling both uneasy and excited.

"Let's go take a look first," Alena said. "Even if we want to take action, we have to wait until tomorrow morning."

Not long after, the carriage slowed down. Sophie looked out and saw that the people in front had stopped.

This was the high slope north of the town, next to the fenced-off mine. Torches were lit everywhere, blazing brightly, illuminating the surrounding area and even the sky.

The carriage also stopped and the two nuns got off one after another. Eric had already checked the fence of the mine and was discussing the arrangements for setting up camp with the captain of the guards.

"Let's set up camp in the open space ahead."

Eric pointed to the flat land not far away and said, "Just clear the weeds and stuff. There's plenty of space here and the view is good."

"it is good."

Leslie looked around. It was open and flat, and there was nothing wrong with it - if the undead in the mine didn't suddenly appear.

However, as a fifth-level warrior, he didn't take those low-level rotten things seriously at all.

He looked down again. He could see the whole town from this side, and naturally he could also see here from the other side. The town residents who were frightened by the undead could probably sleep well tonight.

Leslie's gaze returned to Eric beside him, and he felt a little emotional again.

He remained calm in the face of danger, commanded the guards in an orderly manner, and arranged things in a very thorough manner. If it were the city lord Edgar, he would not think there was anything wrong, but this young master had just come of age.

If they hadn't come out together this time, he would have thought he was just a young master with some talent in swordsmanship - even though he had caused a big fuss in Goddess Square this morning.

Eric didn't know that the captain of the guards beside him was feeling so much. When he saw the two nuns get off the carriage, he walked over and said:

"Sister Head, Miss Sophie, we will camp here tonight. Dinner will be prepared soon. After dinner, I will arrange for someone to take you to the church to rest."

Alena nodded, thanking him for his kindness and having no objection.

Sophie walked to the dense fence surrounding the mine, put her hands on the logs that were obviously still new, and was curious about what the mine would look like inside.

"Don't get too close." Eric's voice came over, "There should be quite a few undead gathered inside the wall."

As if to verify his words, a strange noise suddenly came from inside the wall. It sounded like someone scratching the wall, and there was also a hoarse growl.

"Uh... ah..."

Sophie was startled and took several steps back.

"I want to see what's inside..."

Eric also took a few steps back, looking past the wall in front of him and towards the higher hillside on the other side.

"That location should be good. Want to check it out?"
