The real life of an American police officer: Winning over others with virtue
Chapter 231 Handover
Chapter 231 Handover
Eric glanced down.
The red laser beam instantly locked onto him, leaving at least four or five blinding spots of light embedded in his chest and forehead.
There were quite a few special police officers present.
"Don't move! Hands up! Turn your face to the left carriage!"
A sharp voice roared from behind the shield, drowning out all his thoughts.
Looking at the SWAT team's formation, with shields raised and guns pointed at them, cautiously surrounding him, Eric couldn't help but mutter a complaint in his mind.
Brother, is this really necessary?
But given the current situation, Eric had no choice but to comply, so he obediently did as he was told helplessly.
"Hey buddy, relax, I really am a cop, LAPD, we're on the same side!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the SWAT team seemed to relax a little, but the gun barrels and laser points remained perfectly aligned.
Two HRT members, carrying shields and wearing heavy bulletproof vests, emerged from the crowd and slowly approached.
One man shielded his companion with a shield, while the other quickly moved closer to Eric's side, his eyes fixed on Eric's raised hands and the pistol lying on the railroad tracks.
“Don’t worry, I won’t move,” Eric said.
"Identity confirmed! Do you have any identification?" The approaching SWAT officer's voice was tense.
“In the right trouser pocket,” Eric replied, maintaining his posture to avoid startling the other man and giving him a shot.
Eric had seen and heard far too many similar cases since becoming a patrol officer, and he didn't want to be the one to take the fall.
The SWAT officer moved swiftly, holding his gun pointed at the ground in one hand to maintain vigilance, while his other hand quickly and professionally pulled Eric's LAPD badge from the leather holster on his lower back, glancing at the photo, name, and number on it in the dim light.
"Confirmed! LAPD Officer Eric Stevens!"
He quickly reported into the communicator, showing his badge to his teammates behind the shield, before carefully putting it back into Eric's pocket.
"Hold your posture! We're about to conduct a security search!"
Eric calmly replied, "OK."
Another team member immediately stepped forward and began a thorough body search of Eric from head to toe. The action was quick and professional, confirming that he had no other weapons besides his badge and spare magazine.
The search was completed, and the SWAT team members in charge of the search took a step back:
"Safety!"
Only then did the laser beams locked onto Eric gradually go out.
The HRT player who had approached relaxed slightly, looking at Eric with a strange, unreadable light in his eyes:
"Officer Stevens, this is Captain Bane Smith of HRT Team One."
Thank you for your action, but we need your cooperation temporarily to leave the core danger zone. ECT will be there shortly.
Eric muttered to himself, "You're only finding out now?"
Eric still said, "Understood, I will cooperate with you." Then, escorted by two HRT team members, he quickly evacuated the dangerous area next to the train and headed to the safer assembly area behind.
The remaining HRT team members began to pour into the train.
-
Hayes witnessed the entire process of Eric being apprehended, identified, and removed via live feed from the HRT team members' helmet cameras.
He visibly relaxed after Eric was taken away, but his brow remained furrowed.
"Davis".
Hayes turned to the LAPD counterterrorism chief beside him, his tone complex, "Is he really a second-degree patrol officer?"
Hayes wasn't the only one like this; Davis, as the director of the LAPD's Special Operations Bureau, also didn't know how to express his thoughts. "He was a Level 3 patrol officer before, but he was demoted because of a violation," he said, carefully choosing his words.
"A violation?" Hayes asked in surprise, but then nodded knowingly.
"That's true. Someone who dares to open fire at the slightest provocation under these circumstances must be a troublesome devil who gives many people a headache."
Hayes paused for a moment, then changed the subject: "Although a greater disaster was averted, he was a key witness at the scene and the person who used deadly force. The consequences of his individual actions are severe, and his report and subsequent investigation will likely be quite troublesome."
Upon hearing this, Davis remained unconcerned. This was America, where procedural justice was paramount. Given Eric's status, the unit responsible for handling his case was not the FBI but the Los Angeles Police Department.
“Yes, the LAPD’s OSI (Office of Internal Affairs Investigations) will take over his follow-up matters immediately,” Davis interjected.
"Our people are already on their way."
Hayes looked at Davis, who had suddenly interrupted, and felt a little speechless, but still asked, "Does he work for the West Canyon Police Department?"
Upon hearing this, Davis immediately understood what the other party wanted to do, and he coughed and said.
"Yeah, I was thinking of recruiting this kid to work for me, but unfortunately the West Canyon Police Department is keeping a close eye on him."
Hayes said in surprise, "If they really want it, they shouldn't be able to stop them, right?"
Upon hearing this, Davis felt a headache coming on, so he simply said, "We can't stop him, but our Chief Superintendent seems to really like him. He's been talking about him a lot lately."
And I heard this kid's family is quite wealthy, and he only joined the Los Angeles Police Department because he likes being a patrol officer, so..."
Upon hearing this, Hayes simply nodded with a forced smile, then turned to face forward.
It turns out that the biggest obstacle wasn't the police station, but the chief inspector.
The Carlisle family? Fine, then he certainly can't afford to offend them.
-
Eric was unaware of his conversation with the train. He was taken to a temporary safe area relatively far from the train, surrounded by abandoned tracks and containers.
Despite the terrible environment, Eric felt relaxed and didn't think anything would happen to him. He listened carefully to the sounds and heard that they seemed to have successfully dealt with the bomb, which made him even more relaxed.
He looked at the few HRT team members who were still maintaining perimeter security and said.
"Hey buddy, don't be nervous, relax, the bomb's taken care of."
The HRT team members exchanged glances, wondering to themselves, "Who are these people? So careless. They caused such a big incident and aren't even nervous, even telling them to relax?"
Hearing no response, Eric felt a bit bored and just waited for things to escalate before someone came to pick him up.
Soon, several SUVs bearing the LAPD logo sped towards us from a distance.
Eric squinted at him.
Several men in plainclothes but with serious expressions got out of the car. The leader was a black man who looked to be in his fifties with gray hair, and his shoulder insignia indicated that he was of high rank.
The gold oak leaf badge belongs to a police inspector.
He was followed by a police officer with a whiteboard and a man in a suit who looked like he was from the Ministry of the Interior.
Watching them negotiate with the HRT outside, Eric knew he must have been transferred to the Los Angeles Police Department.
This also means that the FBI and LAPD here have reached an agreement.
"Hmm, our own people are here." Eric's lips curled into an ambiguous smile as he watched the approaching group.
