Chapter 81 One of you must marry me
Chapter 81 Someone Must Marry You
"What are you thinking about? You seem so unsatisfied?"
Wen Jinnian looked up and saw a handsome face approaching from the person sitting next to her.
Wen Jinian subconsciously shrank back against the sofa; she didn't want to be outmaneuvered by him every time.
He blurted out instinctively, "Dr. Chi is amazing."
This was met with a low laugh from Chi Yige.
Wen Jinnian tilted her head back, looking very serious, "Dr. Chi has a face that's perfect for attracting older women. If I paint it too realistically, will it cause you any trouble?"
"Niannian, won't you get jealous?"
She stubbornly retorted, "No."
He suddenly leaned in, his nose almost touching hers: "Don't ignore me then, Wen..."
"would not!"
She answered quickly, but her ears burned when he chuckled.
She later realized that he had set her up.
"How about we make a bet?" Chi Yige twirled a strand of her hair around his fingertip. "Let's see who gets jealous first and flips the jar over. The loser..."
He chuckled softly, "We need to take the initiative to cultivate the relationship."
Wen Jinian's heart pounded, but she defiantly reached out and patted his shoulder: "Let's bet! Who's afraid of who..."
She glared at his triumphant smile, then suddenly grabbed the tablet and moved half a meter back.
They're setting a trap for her again.
Wen Jinnian went to the Duan family on her own.
At the banquet, when she caught sight of that figure in the distance, she almost burst out laughing.
He was dressed in a sharp black bespoke suit, exuding a cold aura like a prince emerging from the night. Yet, he wore a black mask, revealing only a pair of slightly upturned, almond-shaped eyes. When the corner of his eye swept over the crowd, he inexplicably emanated a languid sense of oppression.
"What are you laughing at?" Jiang Shu walked up to her side without her noticing, and her gaze followed hers to Chi Yige, who was surrounded by the crowd.
His voice suddenly turned deep, "Niannian is very interested in this young master of the Chi family?"
Wen Jinian was biting into a cherry, and juice spilled from the corner of her mouth. Just as she was about to raise her hand to wipe it, Jiang Shu handed her a clean tissue.
She instinctively took a half step back and snatched the tissue from his palm: "Thank you, brother."
Jiang Shu's hand froze in mid-air, a dark glint in his eyes: "Niannian seems to have distanced herself from me."
She lowered her eyes and crumpled the tissue into a ball. "Brother, we've all grown up. Look... your wife is still waiting for you over there."
Jiang Shu took a deep breath, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists: "She's not your sister-in-law, and that child... might not be mine."
Wen Jinian lowered her eyes and stirred the sparkling water in her glass, her cherry-red fingernails casting dappled shadows on the glass: "Brother, you should have thought it through when you got engaged—whether you wanted your career or love. If you chose the former, you have to accept the gains and losses."
He gave a wry smile and tilted his head back to gulp down the entire glass of champagne.
In the corner of her eye, Zhou Shiyi walked over, wearing a loose light purple dress. Her belly was already slightly protruding. When her smiling gaze fell on Wen Jinnian, a hint of surprise flashed across her face.
"Niannian, what are you talking about with Brother Jiang?"
Wen Jinnian stared at her protruding belly, her fingertips tracing the rim of the cup: "We were just talking about the baby in your belly, sister-in-law. I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?"
Zhou Shiyi's smile froze for a moment, and she awkwardly tugged at her skirt: "As long as Brother Jiang likes men or women, it's fine..."
Wen Jinnian was wearing a beige off-the-shoulder princess dress chosen by Chi Yige. She stood gracefully with her hair tied up with a hairpin, and the pearl necklace and earrings around her neck complemented each other, making her look fresh and refined.
Her eyes and brows were gentle and tender, yet also revealed a girlish charm, like a little princess who had stepped out of a classical oil painting. As soon as she appeared, she caught the eye of everyone in the banquet hall.
Jiang Shu was no exception.
Chi Yige, who was in the crowd, spotted the beautiful figure as he entered. When he saw Jiang Shu approaching Wen Jinnian, his hand, which was hanging by his side, clenched into a fist involuntarily, his nails almost digging into his palm. He tried his best to suppress the urge to step forward and protect her behind him.
While conversing with others, he appeared composed, but his eyes would occasionally dart towards Wen Jinian's direction, a dark undercurrent surging in his gaze that others couldn't decipher. The moment Wen Jinian caught sight of Zhou Shiyi, she felt a tightness in her chest.
She made up an excuse to walk to the next seat, just as her phone vibrated. It was a message from Jiang Xiao, urging her to talk more with the two young masters of the Duan family.
She scanned the crowd but couldn't find Wen Jin, so she stopped at the next table and kept looking around.
Duan Jiaxu, however, had a sharp eye and walked over with a wine glass in hand: "Wen, I really didn't expect you to come. I thought you had resigned from the art studio."
Wen Jinian quickly waved her hand: "How could that be? I also have shares in the art studio."
At the time, Fu Yiyi insisted on giving her 10%, and later she also invested some of her own savings.
"That's great! Miss Fu only said you went abroad on business, but I didn't believe it. I thought something had happened."
Duan Jiaxu smiled and raised an eyebrow, "By the way, what about your trip this time..."
"Just dealing with some personal matters."
Wen Jinnian interrupted him, pointing towards the bustling banquet hall, "Today is your uncle's birthday banquet, aren't you going to greet the other guests?"
Duan Jiaxu chuckled and leaned against the edge of the table, putting down his wine glass: "Those people are so arrogant, I can't be bothered with them."
Duan Jiaxu suddenly lowered his voice and gestured towards the corner of the banquet hall: "Wen, look over there."
Following his finger, a group of elegantly dressed socialites were casting flirtatious glances at Duan Jiayan, while another group of people were frequently looking in the direction of Chi Yiyi.
“My uncle insisted on arranging blind dates for my brother, and the result was quite something, like a ‘concubine selection’.”
Wen Jinnian glanced around and couldn't help but chuckle.
"It does look like it."
"Is there someone here who's interested in you?"
"Wen, don't scare me."
Wen Jinnian raised an eyebrow: "I'm starting to worry. Maybe someone here has a crush on you. You'd better keep your distance from me."
As soon as he finished speaking, two women adorned with jewels gracefully approached.
She gestured to Duan Jiaxu with her eyes, and as soon as he turned his head, he was surrounded by the two men on both sides.
The girl on the left took his arm, while the one on the right pressed against his shoulder, chattering as she introduced herself: "Young Master Duan, I am Lin Jiaojiao."
"I'm Chen Yaoyao, we used to play together when we were little!"
Duan Jiaxu's face instantly turned as black as the bottom of a pot, and he cast a pleading look at Wen Jinnian.
She shrugged and spread her hands, looking like she couldn't help.
Duan Jiaxu could no longer bear it and forcefully shook off their hands.
"Stand still! Even if our families are old friends, I'm telling you clearly, there's no chance for us!"
"Brother Duan..." Lin Jiaojiao stomped her feet, and Chen Yaoyao tried to take her hand again, but Duan Jiaxu dodged to the side.
The two women exchanged a glance and said coquettishly, "Uncle Duan already said that we are your childhood brides. You can pick any one of us, and we promise we won't quarrel!"
Wen Jinnian stared in shock. She had heard of the absurdities of wealthy families before, but the blatant act of "reserving two child brides" for her son was truly eye-opening.
What's even more outrageous is that the two seem to have a pretty good relationship.
Duan Jiaxu noticed Wen Jinnian's twitching lips and hurriedly waved his hand to explain, "Wen, don't misunderstand! When we were little, our families lived close by, and it was just a joke the adults made casually. They took it seriously! I've been studying abroad and just got back. How could they possibly..."
"But we swore when we were little that one of us would marry you!"
Lin Jiaojiao and Chen Yaoyao spoke in unison, their eyes filled with stubbornness.
