Chapter 11 Setting up a street stall

"I agree to sell hair ties!"

While Su Jianjun was still hesitating, Su's mother agreed to Su Nuannuan's suggestion.

Without further ado, after dinner, the Su family, led by Su's mother, began making hair ties. Su's father, unable to resist his mother's insistence, eventually joined in as well.

Su's father and Su Erqiang, two clumsy men, were responsible for cutting the scraps of cloth into pieces three fingers wide.

Su's mother and Su Sanquan, both with nimble fingers, were in charge of braiding the bows.

Su Nuannuan and Su Daliang were responsible for finishing the hair ties, sewing the bows onto them.

The process was like an assembly line; the work was quick, and the candles were about to burn out. The Su family had made a total of 150 bow hair ties.

"Tomorrow, my older brother and I will go set up a stall together."

Su Nuannuan decided to team up with the most meticulous and steady of the three to set up a stall selling hair ties.

"No."

"No."

Su's mother and Su Sanquan raised their voices in opposition.

"I'm worried about you two going. Nuannuan, how about Mom goes with you?"

"No, it's best if no one knows we're selling hair ties at a stall. If we actually make money, it'll attract envy."

Most importantly, Su Nuannuan didn't mention that in six years, the situation would be dire, and small vendors like them would be labeled as speculators and profiteers. If the villagers found out and reported them, whether they would face serious consequences was uncertain, but they would definitely get into trouble.
“Nuan Nuan is right. Xiu Ting, you should stay in the village tomorrow. They are not children and they won’t get lost.”

Su's father agreed with Su Nuannuan's point of view. Having served as the brigade leader for so many years, he knew that the mentality of "laughing at the poor and hating the rich" was most common in rural areas.

Then, the whole family turned their attention to the other person who said 'no'.

Su Sanquan stammered, feeling the gaze of so many eyes on him.

"I...I also want to set up a street stall."

"What are you arguing about! Your older brother is going to help Nuannuan, what can you do?"

Before Su Sanquan could finish speaking, his father slapped him on the back of the head.

"I'm going to help too."

Su Sanquan retorted in a low voice.

"Why don't we let Third Brother go? One of us can watch the stall, one can collect payments, and one can sell the goods."

Su Nuannuan gently pulled her father's arm and shook it from side to side, softly persuading him.

Unable to resist his little darling's pleading, Su's father finally agreed to Su Nuannuan's request. He also asked Su Erqiang if he wanted to go, since the other two brothers had gone, and it wouldn't be fair to leave him alone at home to do the chores.

Su Erqiang shook his head, his eyes shining as he looked at Su Nuannuan.
"No, I'm not going. Nuannuan, if you make money, can you buy me the big meat bun I ate last time?"

Su Nuannuan was both amused and exasperated; her second brother was truly a glutton.

"Okay, if I make money, I'll buy you a big meat bun."

After taking a shower, Su Nuannuan returned to her room. She then went into her spatial dimension.

The planted crops had grown to knee-high, especially the sweet potatoes, which had already formed tubers. Su Nuannuan used her spiritual power to sense the growth of the sweet potatoes and found that each one underground was the size of a small bowl, which would be considered top-quality sweet potatoes in the outside world.

Breaking one open, Su Nuannuan took a bite and found the sweet potato juice to be sweeter than any raw sweet potato she had ever eaten before.

Su Nuannuan began to use her mental power to dig out all the sweet potatoes in the ground.

Looking at the sweet potatoes piled up like a small mountain on the ground, Su Nuannuan frowned and began to think.

She needed to find a way to get these sweet potatoes outside to improve the family's meals. After thinking for a long time without coming up with a solution, Su Nuannuan decided to think about it another day.

It was already 10 p.m., and Su Nuannuan's biological clock had brought her to sleep.

The next day, Su Nuannuan, Su Daliang, and Su Sanquan got up early. Su's mother steamed a cornbread for each of them and served them half a bowl of wild vegetable porridge. Su Nuannuan frowned and poured the wild vegetable porridge into her mouth like medicine, while secretly giving the cornbread to Su Daliang and Su Sanquan when Su's mother wasn't looking.

Because the Su family didn't want the villagers to know they were going to the county town to set up a stall and sell things, the three of them got up very early, hoping to leave the village before everyone else got their wages.

The fog was still very thick on the road. Su Daliang and Su Sanquan walked on either side of Su Nuannuan as they left the village. Upon arriving in the county town, Su Daliang asked Su Nuannuan a question.

"Nuan Nuan, shall we just go to the market and set up a stall?"

Su Nuannuan shook her head and explained to her two older brothers.

"At the market, it's usually villagers from the county town selling vegetables, fruits, and chicken, duck, and goose eggs. In the past two years, grain production has decreased, so there are far fewer people at the market. People like us who sell jewelry for young girls usually have to set up our stalls in high-end areas."

You mean a department store?

Su Nuannuan gave Su Sanquan a look that said "you're teachable," but still shook her head and denied his guess.

"Third Brother only answered half the question. Department stores are indeed high-end places, but if we set up stalls in front of their stores, aren't we stealing their business? They will definitely drive us away."

"Where should we set up our stall?"

This was Su Daliang's first time setting up a stall, and he had no experience whatsoever. For the first time, the usually steady and reliable Su Daliang looked to the younger sister for help.

"Go to Yimin Overseas Chinese Food Factory!"

Seeing that Su Daliang and Su Sanquan looked confused, Su Nuannuan continued to explain.

"Yimin Overseas Chinese Food Factory is a Sino-foreign joint venture, and the workers there are paid very high wages. Moreover, most importantly, as the largest food processing plant in Heilongjiang Province, they have no shortage of food."

The clever Su Sanquan then chimed in.

"So, they spend their extra money on dressing up."

Clothing, food, housing, and transportation—aren't these the only things ordinary people can afford to spend money on? Su Daliang had also thought of this, and then he said it to Su Nuannuan and Su Sanquan.

"Let's go there!"

Su Nuannuan nodded. Going now would be just in time for the workers to go to work. They could set up their stall on the road the workers would inevitably pass by, so even if the workers didn't buy anything, it would still help them advertise. By noon, when they started selling again, there would be more foot traffic.

The three moved quickly and arrived outside the Yimin Overseas Chinese Food Factory. Su Daliang looked around and found a flat and open place, where he began to take out the bow hair ties from the burlap sack.

Su Nuannuan laid a burlap sack on the ground, then covered it with a layer of white cotton cloth, and placed the bow hair tie on top. Besides the bow hair tie, there was also a type of plain scrunchie without a bow, which sold for one cent each.

After reciting the sales techniques she used in her previous life to her two older brothers, Su Nuannuan began waiting for customers to come to her door.

At 7 a.m., workers began to arrive at Yimin Overseas Chinese Food Factory.

Su Daliang and Su Sanquan started shouting one sentence after another.

Su Daliang: "Don't miss out, there are great deals at the street stalls for you to choose from."

Su Sanquan: "The hair ties sold at street stalls are affordable and of guaranteed quality."

Su Daliang: "If you're a gay man, you should definitely buy a hair tie and give it to your partner."

Su Sanquan: "If you're a lesbian, you should also buy yourself a hair tie. Smooth hair makes you look more beautiful!"

……

Two good-looking young men were selling things like they were performing a comedy routine, which quickly attracted a lot of people to come and watch.

Su Nuannuan noticed that many women were drawn to the pretty hair ties on the stall. So, she quickly called out to them.

"Beautiful lady, come and take a look. This is a French-style butterfly hair tie, the most popular style in Haishi."

As soon as Su Nuannuan mentioned Haishi, the girls couldn't stand still and stepped forward to ask about the price of the hair ties.

"Butterfly hair ties are 25 cents each, and vegetarian scrunchies are 1 cent each."

Su Nuannuan gestured to her two brothers with her eyes to help pay the bill.

After selling more than a dozen, Su Nuannuan noticed that several women hesitated and did not buy any.

Su Nuannuan then used her second trump card. She said to them.

"Actually, with a hair tie, you can tie several different hairstyles. Comrade, let me demonstrate for you."
