Chapter 13 Planting Sweet Potatoes on the Back Hill

The three of them counted their earnings and found they had earned a total of 37 yuan today. After deducting the 5 yuan given to Su Nuannuan, they earned a total of 32 yuan.

All three were very happy and did not stay in the county town for long. They took the money and returned to Hongqi Village.

Su Daliang led the two men along a side path.

The three of them walked quickly and soon arrived home. Mr. and Mrs. Su also finished work.

Su's mother was cooking in the kitchen, while Su's father and Su Erqiang stood guard at the door. They only breathed a sigh of relief when they saw their three siblings return.

"You're finally back! Nuannuan, did you buy me a big meat bun?"

Su Erqiang went to meet him, and when he saw the familiar brown paper bag in his older brother's hand, his eyes lit up and he took it.

She eagerly opened the bag, reached in, grabbed a large meat bun, and stuffed it into her mouth. Su Nuannuan watched this familiar scene and her lips twitched again.

Sure enough, the eldest of the triplets was the most composed.

When Su's father saw Su Erqiang wolfing down his food at the door, his hands started itching again.

"Su Erqiang, go back inside and eat!"

Hearing his father's furious roar, Su Erqiang was so frightened that he choked.

Su Daliang and Su Sanquan burst out laughing without any restraint. Su Nuannuan suppressed her laughter and quickly stepped forward to pat him on the back.

After finally managing to swallow the food in his mouth, Su Erqiang said to his father with dissatisfaction.

"Dad, what are you shouting for? You scared me."

After saying that, he turned to look at Su Nuannuan and smiled.

"My little sister is so much better. Unlike Dad, who always looks so fierce."

Upon hearing this, Su's father immediately became furious.

"Hey, you little brat, how dare you talk to your old man like that!"

After saying that, he picked up a broom from the side and was about to hit Su Erqiang.

Su Erqiang couldn't let his father hit him, so he quickly grabbed the brown paper bag and ran into the house.

Su's father was just putting on an act; he didn't really intend to beat Su Erqiang. Seeing that Su Erqiang had gone back into the house, he didn't chase after him.

At this moment, Su's mother also came out of the kitchen.

"So, did you make any money?"

Su Daliang nodded, handed the money bag to his mother, and Su Sanquan closed the gate to the courtyard.

“After deducting the money spent on meat buns and water bottles, we made a total of 32 yuan. Mom, count it.”

Looking at the scattered money in her hand, Su's mother's hands trembled with excitement. She hadn't expected to earn so much money in just one morning.

City workers only earn 30 yuan a month. They never imagined this family could earn a month's wages in just one day.

Su Daliang continued.

"People from the department store took a liking to the hair ties we make and wanted to buy them from us. They offered to charge us 2 cents per hair tie and deliver them to us every morning at 7 o'clock. I agreed."

Mr. Su nodded. Although selling to the department store would result in a loss of 5 cents, it would save his family the trouble of setting up a stall every day.

"That sounds good, but where are we going to find enough scraps of cloth to make this?"

Su's mother also agreed to sell the hair ties to the department store. However, she worried that she wouldn't be able to buy scraps of fabric next time, and that the supply wouldn't be enough.

Su Nuannuan spoke up at this moment.

"Mom, don't worry. My classmate Yu Weiwei's mother works at Xiangyang Textile Factory. Their factory produces a lot of scrap fabric every day. I've already asked her to bring some back for me. She'll pay me five cents per pound."

Hearing this, Su's mother breathed a sigh of relief. She wasn't afraid of being tired; her only worry was not earning enough money.

Seeing that the three Su brothers had grown up and the house was no longer big enough, she and her father were worried every day.

“Great. Today, I’ll make all the remaining fabric into hair ties, and Da Liang will deliver them to the department store tomorrow.”

Su Daliang nodded. He decided to get up earlier tomorrow and come back sooner, so he might be able to help with the chores at home.

"Mom, I'm going tomorrow too. My older brother and I are going to my classmate's house to see if the scraps of fabric have arrived." Su Daliang nodded. Su Nuannuan really did have to go tomorrow.

In the afternoon, all the members of the Su family finished work, leaving Su Nuannuan alone at home again.

Feeling a bit bored, Su Nuannuan decided to take a stroll in the back mountain.

Arriving at the back of the mountain, Su Nuannuan wanted to use the same method as last time to catch a few more pheasants and rabbits to take back. Just thinking about the braised rabbit meat her mother had made last time made her mouth water.

Su Nuannuan followed suit, throwing the cabbage soaked in the spiritual spring water onto the ground and hiding behind a large tree to wait for pheasants and rabbits to come to her.

Sure enough, less than half an hour later, a pheasant moved toward the cabbage.

Su Nuannuan easily caught the pheasant. However, just as she was about to put the pheasant into her spatial storage, she was surprised to find that tender green shoots were sprouting from the dry grass where cabbages had been placed.

Thinking she was seeing things, Su Nuannuan squatted down and parted the surrounding weeds; it really was a tender green shoot.

A thought suddenly flashed through Su Nuannuan's mind. However, she still needed to verify it.

She took out the sweet potato she had grown from her spatial storage, cut it into several pieces with a knife, dug a hole in the ground, put the sweet potato into the hole, and watered it with spiritual spring water.

After waiting for about an hour, Su Nuannuan arrived at the place where she had planted the sweet potatoes and found that green sprouts had emerged.

Sure enough, the spiritual spring water could also stimulate the plants outside the space.

Thinking of the mountains of sweet potatoes piled up in her space, Su Nuannuan came up with a way to deal with them.

She planned to plant some sweet potatoes on the mountain, then use the spring water to accelerate their growth. Once they bore fruit, she would let the villagers discover them. At that time, every family would be able to receive a share of the grain.

However, she only planted a small portion. She would then take the rest out and mix them in when the sweet potatoes were harvested.

Without further ado, Su Nuannuan spent the entire afternoon planting sweet potatoes.

By the time it got dark, Su Nuannuan was completely exhausted.

Sure enough, there was a reason why the original owner of this body refused to work in the fields. She was simply too exhausted. Su Nuannuan looked at the blisters on her hands with teary eyes and sighed inwardly.

Unlike inside her spatial dimension, where she could manipulate things with her thoughts and plant an acre of land in no time, outside, Su Nuannuan had worked herself to the bone and only managed to plant half an acre. She decided she would need to come back again tomorrow.

Taking out a sterilized needle from her spatial storage, Su Nuannuan popped the blister and then soaked her hand in the spiritual spring water. She found that the pain in her hand quickly subsided, and the skin that had been blistered began to heal.

How amazing! Su Nuannuan thought to herself.

Back home, the Su family shared the meat buns that Su Nuannuan and the others had brought back for dinner, and everyone ate happily.

"Nuan Nuan, you must have spent a lot of money on the meat buns and water bottle. Mom will make it up to you in a bit."

"No need, Mom. My older brother already gave me the money during the day. You can see for yourself."

Su Nuannuan took out the five yuan that Su Daliang had given her. It was a small, loose handful of money, which made Su Erqiang and Su Sanquan, who were standing to the side, very envious.

After dinner, the Su family began making hair ties. The tasks were the same as yesterday, but everyone's faces were filled with hopeful smiles.

Su Nuannuan was too tired this afternoon. After coming back, she helped her family make hair ties. When she got back to her room at night, she collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep without waking up.

The next day, Su Nuannuan was woken up by her mother.

She struggled to get out of bed, her shoulders aching terribly.

too painful!

She decided that once the sweet potatoes on the back hill were planted, she would never go down to the fields again!
Only Su Daliang and Su Nuannuan went to the county town this time.

The two men first went to the department store and explained their purpose. They soon met Li Gang.

Since the terms had been agreed upon yesterday, Li Gang paid them 30 yuan after checking that the hair ties were in good condition.

Su Nuannuan then took Su Daliang to Yu Weiwei's house. Upon arriving at the door, Su Nuannuan said to Su Daliang...

"Big brother, are you coming in with me, or waiting for me outside?"

"I'll wait for you outside."

Su Daliang has never been to Su Nuannuan's home.

His clothes were covered in patches, and not wanting to embarrass his younger sister, he refused to go in.
