Chapter 6 Family
Su Nuannuan looked into the inner room but did not see Su Jianjun.

"Mom, where's dad?"

Chen Xiuting put the flour into the cabinet, her hands moving constantly, while she called out to Su Nuannuan.

“It’s almost dark, and you still haven’t come back. Your dad was worried about you, so he went to the village entrance to meet you. Ask your older brother to go and call him back.”

Su Nuannuan responded with an "oh". Today, they returned via a side path, just around the village entrance.

"Big brother, Dad is waiting for us at the village entrance. Mom wants you to call him back."

"it is good."

Before Su Daliang left, he arranged for his two younger brothers to help carry water for the family. Now, only Su Nuannuan remained in the courtyard. She looked around the dilapidated yet clean little courtyard.

The Su family has five bedrooms. Three of them are large brick and tile houses that have been passed down from their ancestors and are quite old. The brick roofs are covered with moss. The other two are thatched houses that were added last year.

In the yard, one side was fenced off and several chickens were kept there. The other side of the land was planted with scallions, cabbages, green beans... and they were all well-maintained.

Su Nuannuan really liked this rural courtyard; it had a modern farmhouse feel to it.

Su's mother raised two hens and one rooster. She couldn't bear to kill them, hoping the hens would lay more eggs to supplement the family's meals. However, the hens never laid any eggs. Su Nuannuan saw that the hens were thin and bony, with hardly any meat on their bodies, and she didn't wonder why the hens weren't laying eggs.

Su Nuannuan walked into the chicken coop and added a drop of spiritual spring water to the water basin. The chickens seemed to smell something delicious and came forward to surround the water basin.

She hadn't expected the spring water to be so attractive to animals. After they drank, she noticed the chickens seemed much more energetic. From then on, she fed them a drop of the spring water every day, believing they would soon be able to lay eggs again.

After all this was done, the sound of Su Nuannuan's door being pushed open filled the air. The sound preceded her appearance.

"Nuan Nuan, Dad is back."

A burly man from Northeast China, standing at 185 cm tall, pushed open the door and entered. Su Jianjun had a resolute appearance, and when he wasn't smiling, he gave off a stern feeling. However, whenever he was facing Su Nuannuan, his serious face would soften, and his rough voice would become more husky.

Su Jianjun stepped forward, lifted Su Nuannuan up like a child, and bounced her around a little. Su Nuannuan's mind went blank for a moment when she was lifted up.

After realizing what had happened, Su Nuannuan felt a rush of blood to her head, and her cheeks turned bright red.

What a shame!

At 1.5 meters tall, Su Nuannuan appeared extremely petite next to Su Jianjun, who was 1.85 meters tall.

Su Nuannuan couldn't understand why the Su family, where everyone was tall, had produced such a short girl like herself. Fortunately, she was still young and could still grow taller.

After Su Jianjun arrived home, Chen Xiuting invited everyone to eat.

At the dinner table, apart from Su Nuannuan who had white noodles in front of her, the others had cornbread with plain water, and a plate of stir-fried wild vegetables with pork cracklings in the middle.

The obvious difference startled Su Nuannuan for a moment. Then she remembered the large meat buns and steamed buns in her bag, and quickly took them out and distributed them to her parents and three older brothers.

"Dad, Mom, these are big meat buns I bought from the state-run restaurant. You can have them. Dad and Mom will eat two, and my three older brothers have already eaten one, so we'll share one."

Su Nuannuan divided the steamed buns and placed the mantou (steamed bread) on the table. Su's parents stared blankly at their little girl dividing the buns, exchanged a glance, and their eyes reddened. For the first time in many years, this was the first time they had felt such tenderness from their daughter.

"Mom doesn't want to eat, Nuannuan, you and your brothers can eat."

As she spoke, Su's mother stuffed the meat bun back into Su Nuannuan's hands.

Su Nuannuan brought back meat buns to add to the family's meal, so she quickly waved her hand and said, "How could I eat them?"

“I’m tired of eating big meat buns these past two days. I can’t even finish the steamed buns Mom gave me, so I brought some back. Besides, I can fill up on these noodles. Mom, Dad, and my brothers, you can have the buns and steamed buns.”

Seeing a large bowl of white noodles in front of his daughter, Mr. Su knew she was telling the truth, so he didn't continue to persuade her. Instead, he spoke to Mrs. Su.

"Xiuting, you eat it. These buns don't keep well, it would be a shame if they spoiled."

Su Daliang, Su Erqiang, and Su Sanquan began to persuade their mother. They even mentioned that they had only eaten one when they picked up their younger sister. Only then did their mother feel at ease enough to eat.

The Su family enjoyed their meal very much. After finishing the cornbread and steamed buns, Su's mother put the steamed buns away. Unlike the large meat buns, the steamed buns kept very well, and Su's mother didn't want to eat so many at once, so she put them in the cupboard. At the dinner table, Su's mother also told Su's father about Su Nuannuan buying wheat flour in the county town. Upon hearing this, Su's father told Su's mother to return the wheat flour she had borrowed a few days ago.

After dinner, Su Daliang washed the dishes, Su Erqiang boiled water, and Su Sanquan swept the floor. With all the chores done by her three older brothers, Su Nuannuan, seeing that she was the only one with nothing to do, took a rag and wiped the table.

In the evening, Su Jianjun and Chen Xiuting lay in bed, still talking about what had happened during the day.

“Nuannuan has grown up and knows how to care for her family. I guess all the money I gave her went to buying flour and big meat buns. She brought back all the flour buns I told her to take with her. I wonder what she ate these past two days of exams. And just now I saw her wiping the table for Sanquan. The last time I saw her being so considerate was when she was 6 years old.”

At this point, the couple fell silent. They had always believed that Su Nuannuan's brain had been damaged by a fever, which caused her drastic personality change. They had taken her to see many doctors, but her condition did not improve, and the couple had become disheartened.

"Do you think Nuannuan is better now?"

Su Jianjun suddenly spoke up.

This isn't just wild speculation; Su Jianjun and Chen Xiuting took Su Nuannuan to Beijing for a checkup, and the doctor said that Nuannuan's condition might resolve itself as she grows up.
Chen Xiuting also remembered what the doctor had said, and suddenly sat up and looked at Su Jianjun.

"You know what, it's really possible! Jianjun, that's great, our Nuannuan is back."

Overwhelmed with emotion, Chen Xiuting couldn't help but cry. No one knew how she had endured these past few years. Ever since her youngest daughter's dramatic change in temperament nine years ago, Su's mother had often felt that Su Nuannuan was like a lost soul, causing her great anxiety that something might happen to her daughter one day. Now, seeing signs of improvement in her daughter, how could she not be overjoyed?

Seeing his wife in tears, Su Jianjun quickly comforted her.

"It will be alright, everything will be alright..."

On the other side, the three Su brothers, sleeping on a large kang (heated brick bed), were also discussing Su Nuannuan, whose personality had changed drastically.

Su Erqiang: "Big brother, do you think Nuannuan has become better?"

Su Daliang: "I don't know, but whether Nuannuan changes for the better or not, she is still our only sister, and we must protect her."

Su Sanquan: "Yes, I think Big Brother is right. But Nuannuan, if things really get better, Big Sister and Second Sister will be very happy to know."

Su Erqiang: "You're right. Today's big meat buns are really delicious, I want to eat more!"

The topic suddenly shifted, and Su Daliang and Su Sanquan both looked at Su Erqiang, who was grinning foolishly. They exchanged a glance and smiled silently.

On the other side, Su Nuannuan couldn't fall asleep for a long time.

Today, the moment she saw her parents, childhood memories flooded back. Recalling her parents' unwavering love and care, Su Nuannuan, who had been feeling lost, began to feel resolute.

She was Su Nuannuan, and Su Jianjun and Chen Xiuting were her parents! She would make sure her two loving parents lived a good life. Su Nuannuan silently made this decision in her heart.

Her family all thought she had suffered brain damage from a fever when she was six, which caused her sudden personality change, but it was actually due to her soul leaving her body. Su Nuannuan wasn't worried that her sudden change would arouse suspicion. Because she remembered the doctor saying that she might get better as she grew up.

Her parents often talked to her about when she would get better. So she wasn't worried at all.

The next day, when Su Nuannuan woke up, the sun was already high in the sky.

The Su family members had all gone to work, and there were steamed buns and stir-fried vegetables kept warm in the kitchen.

Su Nuannuan didn't waste her mother's kindness and ate the rice in the pot in large mouthfuls. She glanced at her watch in her spatial dimension and found it was only ten o'clock.

After finishing her meal and washing the dishes, Su Nuannuan realized that she was the only one with nothing to do in the whole family.

However, it's impossible to get her to stop working. Neither Su Nuannuan before nor after her transmigration liked doing farm work.

Thinking of the dwindling food supplies at home, Su Nuannuan thought of the resource-rich mountains behind her house. In this era, people relied on the mountains for sustenance; government control wasn't as strict, and any wild game found in the mountains belonged to the individual.

Su Nuannuan didn't have the ability to catch wild animals; she just wanted to go into the mountains to dig up some wild vegetables and pick some edible wild fruits.

She's currently penniless and can't openly take things out of her spatial storage. Once or twice is fine, but if it happens too often, it will arouse suspicion.

So she decided to go into the mountains to see if there was any way to make money, or if she could find something to eat.
