Chapter 1 Circle of Friends

Yu Sijia opened her WeChat Moments and saw Zhang Qi's latest post.

Nine-square grid.

The accompanying text consists of only three words—

Alumni Association.

Zhang Qi was Gu Yu's classmate at Harvard, and You Sijia quickly spotted Gu Yu's figure in these nine pictures.

It's not hard to see that the fourth photo Zhang Qi posted was a photo of Gu Yu and Tang Yayi together.

Even the clothes Gu Yu was wearing were personally chosen by her before he left home this morning.

Looking at Gu Yu in the group photo, You Sijia couldn't help but wonder if Gu Yu was smiling so happily when he was facing her.

I don't recall ever having that.

Yu Sijia and Zhang Qi have many mutual friends, almost all of whom are Gu Yu's classmates or colleagues working in Washington.

"Ya Yi and Gu Yu look so good together in this photo. They really deserve to be the most beautiful couple at our school dance back then. It feels like we're still in college now."

"A perfect couple? Are you kidding me? Ya Yi still looks very beautiful. I was wondering why Gu Yu suddenly changed her mind when she clearly said she wouldn't attend the alumni reunion. It turns out that the beautiful Tang is in Washington on a business trip."

Yu Sijia wanted to take a few more glances at the chat of these "mutual friends," but when she refreshed the page, she found that Zhang Qi's post on WeChat Moments was gone.

It shouldn't be deleted.

The other party realized what was happening and didn't block her.

A message popped up on my phone.

It was friends and relatives wishing her a happy birthday; almost everyone around her, except Gu Yu, sent their blessings.

Two weeks ago, Gu Yu personally promised that he would come back to celebrate her birthday today.

Seeing the congratulatory messages from everyone on her phone, Yu Sijia's slightly pale face broke into a faint smile.

She has received many surprise gifts at home today, which are like blessing text messages that have fallen on her phone, almost piling up into a small mountain, but the most important one is missing.

If the WeChat Moments post I just stumbled upon counts as a "surprise gift," then Yusjia thought, this surprise was indeed unexpected.

In the evening, around dinnertime, Yusjia took out the cake she had made that afternoon from the refrigerator.

She sent a message to Gu Yu.

[Yuska: Where are you? Are you done with your work?]

The other party did not reply immediately.

Before going to bed that night, You Sijia glanced at her phone. She had sent Gu Yu a message that afternoon, but there was still no response.

Yu Sijia, wearing a misty blue silk nightgown, sat on the bed and called Gu Yu.

The phone rang several times before being answered by the person on the other end.

"Hey?"

Yu Sijia could tell that Gu Yu's voice on the phone was somewhat drunk. She pursed her lips and asked, "Where are you?" Gu Yu pressed his brow and replied, "In the car." As if remembering something, Gu Yu added, "I finished work a little late today. You should get some rest. Don't wait for me."

Before Yusjia could say anything more, she heard a familiar female voice coming from the other end of the phone—

"Gu Yu, what are you doing! Who are you talking to on the phone?"

Yu Sijia was a little annoyed that the sound quality of modern mobile phones was so good that even Tang Yayi's voice could be heard so clearly.

The hand holding the phone tightened its grip.

A moment later, after Gu Yu had calmed the person beside him down and the coquettish female voice had finally stopped, You Sijia spoke again: "Is this Tang Yayi?" she asked.

The person on the other end of the phone seemed to be silent for a moment, but eventually answered her question.

"Yes."

"She's in your car?"

"

"Yes, she drank too much. I'll take her back to her hotel first," Gu Yu explained, adding, "I met her at the banquet today."

He did not explain that it was an alumni association.

There is an alumni association for Tang Yayi.

Yusjia looked up and saw her reflection in the floor-to-ceiling window not far away.

The room behind her was large, yet empty, just like her heart right now; even a gust of wind could echo it.

"Who are you to her?" You Sijia couldn't help but ask. Why would her husband take a single woman back to her hotel so late at night? And this woman was Gu Yu's first love.

The person on the other end of the phone responded with silence.

Yuska hung up the phone.

As night fell, she lay alone on her two-meter-wide bed, feeling a bit cold.

She had never thought of living abroad long-term, but because Gu Yu was in charge of overseas business, she came along.

She had no other relatives abroad besides Gu Yu.

She thought that for childhood sweethearts like herself and Gu Yu, growing old together was a natural and inevitable thing.

Yustia clutched the silk fabric at her chest; she felt like crying, but on her birthday, the birthday girl should be happy.

Yustia eventually fell asleep with a frown on her face.

In her sleep, she vaguely felt as if a huge mountain was pressing down on her.

Heavy, alcohol-smelling breaths sprayed onto her neck, making it hard for Yustia to breathe. Finally, she opened her eyes in the darkness.

Gu Yu reached out and supported himself above her, his somewhat amorous peach blossom eyes seeming to shine even in the darkness.
