Chapter 25 Midnight Terror
Chapter 25 Midnight Terror
The underground morgue was deathly silent, without a sound, which was unsettling.
Why didn't you bring him up with you?
Li Wei glanced at Officer Fletcher, who was clearly flustered and hurriedly offered an explanation.
"He didn't want to leave, saying he wanted to look after the other corpses to prevent them from being desecrated."
Are there any other exits here?
"There's an emergency exit over there."
Officer Fletcher pointed to the side, and Levi looked there. Sure enough, he saw a large door, resembling a fire door, bound with heavy chains and securely locked with a thick padlock. Judging from the frost and dust on it, the door hadn't been opened for a long time.
This does not comply with fire safety regulations.
Li Wei silently sighed to himself, then walked forward, with Katie walking beside him, cautiously looking around.
This place feels a lot like a hospital, but much more "brutal" than that. The morgues on both sides are filled with corpses, most of them covered with white sheets. Only the outlines of human figures can be barely discerned, but the more obscured they are, the more unsettling it becomes. It's as if these corpses might rise from their beds and pounce on them at any moment.
"You don't seem particularly scared?"
Levi glanced at Katie and noticed that although she was very cautious, she wasn't afraid at all, unlike Officer Fletcher, whose face was as pale as a corpse.
"Of course, what's there to be afraid of with these corpses?"
Katie proudly waved her little fist.
"I'm not afraid of things that can be solved with fists!"
Yeah, me too.
Holding the revolver in his hand, Li Wei nodded silently. He was actually quite grateful that the monsters in this world were still Western-style, at most just a bit disgusting in appearance. If they were Asian-style curses, evil spirits, or female ghosts, he would run as far away as possible.
So Li Wei doesn't really like playing horror escape games, because in his opinion, they are purely forcing players to run away. If you give me a weapon, I'll let you know who should run.
Even if you can't escape, you'll still make your money if you take one, and make a killing if you take two.
Thinking this, Li Wei pulled himself together, closed his eyes, then opened them again, scanning his surroundings. His gaze sharpened slightly before quickly returning to normal. He turned to look at the two men, brandishing his gun.
"Watch out, be careful of your surroundings."
Upon hearing Levi's words, Officer Fletcher quickly nodded. Katie paused for a moment, then indicated that she understood.
“Da…Da…Da…”
The three of them tried their best to tread lightly, but even the faintest footsteps were amplified and clearly audible in the deathly silence. Combined with the bloodstains dragging on the ground under the stark white light, the atmosphere was even more tense and unsettling.
The long corridor was filled with corpses covered in white sheets in the rooms on both sides, and there was a chilling cold and bloodstains on the ground.
It's fair to say that there's absolutely nothing reassuring about this.
There's a corner ahead.
The bloodstains then took a turn.
Li Wei slowed his pace, walked to the corner of the wall, then turned his head to look ahead, making sure there were no unexpected events, before turning back to continue following the trail of blood. Next, they crossed another corridor and arrived at a room at the far end.
It says "Anatomy Room" above.
The bloodstains disappeared behind the door, and at the same time, low, tearing sounds could be heard from inside.
"…………………"
Li Wei glanced at Katie. Unlike people of this era, he could now guess what the scene inside was like.
I hope he doesn't give me a classic death-defying look; he doesn't want a classic replay at all right now.
While praying silently, Li Wei gripped the gun tightly and then pushed open the door.
“Squeak————”
The door to the autopsy room opened with a sickeningly loud sound, and then Levi, Katie, and Officer Fletcher were able to see what was inside.
The pristine white floor tiles were now stained crimson with blood. An elderly man in a white coat lay on the ground, his eyes wide open, his mouth agape, a twisted expression of terror on his face. But judging from his vacant, cloudy eyes, the old man had clearly been dead for some time.
Beside him, a guy was squatting with his back to Li Wei and the others, his head down, doing something that was unclear.
But from the clear, distinct sounds of chewing and tearing, everyone could guess what was happening. He was kneeling beside the corpse, head bowed, swaying from side to side like a wild dog, tearing and biting. He was pulling and pulling, causing the corpse to shake.
The sound of blood splattering then rang out, becoming the main melody in this silent space.
"Waaah..."
Katie instinctively covered her mouth, her eyes widening, her petite body trembling. At that moment, the person also noticed their presence, stood up, and slowly turned their head towards the three of them…
At that very moment, Li Wei, who was mentally prepared, pulled the trigger without hesitation!
"boom!"
A bullet flew from the muzzle of the gun and headed towards the enemy in front of him.
"Pfft!"
The bullet fired by Li Wei hit the man squarely in the head, but the man did not fall down at all. Instead, he suddenly turned around, raised his arms, and lunged at Li Wei!
Faced with the attack, Li Wei instinctively retreated. Just then, Katie appeared in front of Li Wei in a flash. She let out a shout, and her small fist, clad in a silver glove, shot out and landed a punch on the attacker!
"boom!"
The latter was sent flying backward by the punch, crashing heavily into the wall next to him.
Holy crap! Miss, that's pretty ruthless!
Li Wei, who caught a glimpse of this scene out of the corner of his eye, was also somewhat surprised. Although not as tall as Li Wei, this zombie was still a tall young man of 1.7 meters, while Katie was only 1.6 meters tall and looked rather delicate and weak. Yet, he actually sent the other flying with a single punch.
At this moment, Li Wei couldn't help but recall the scene in the underground chamber where she confronted the monster transformed from Emilia's corpse.
Now it seems that the monster wasn't actually beaten to a pulp by this young lady; it's really resilient... or rather, this young lady is truly terrifying. The thought flashed through Li Wei's mind, but it didn't prevent him from reacting to the battle before him. Although the bullet had hit its head directly, it hadn't caused it enough damage. It still let out a beast-like roar, then stretched out its arms and pounced!
People in this era would probably be at a loss in the face of such a situation. Officer Fletcher, trembling, pulled out his gun, looking completely panicked and unsure what to do. He had clearly never seen anyone who, after being disemboweled, could still run around defiantly, ignoring bullets.
Fortunately, Li Wei comes from an era where people have nothing better to do than discuss anything. On the internet, there are already countless discussions and suggestions about "what to do if a zombie crisis really breaks out!"
So he decisively moved the gun barrel and aimed it at the other man's knee.
"Boom!"
With two gunshots, blood splattered from the zombie's knees, and it collapsed to the ground. Even so, it continued to roar and crawl towards Li Wei with its outstretched hands. Li Wei then repeated the action, breaking its arms in the process.
The zombie, now missing its arms and legs, finally stopped moving forward. It just writhed like a maggot, staring at them with wide eyes and letting out a low wail.
Only then did everyone calm down and let out a long sigh of relief.
Katie stared at the writhing zombie, then looked at Levi.
"Detective, what do we do now?"
"……There's no other way."
Li Wei thought for a moment, then made a decision.
"Contact Inspector Lestrade immediately."
As he spoke, Levi glanced at Katie.
"It would be best to let some people who need to know about this know."
In many horror movies, the protagonist defeats the monster, and the world escapes its fate of destruction without knowing anything about it. But Levi chose a different way.
That is to let others know about it, so that you don't always be the only one who suffers!
Just like now.
The morgue, which was originally as silent as a graveyard, is now unusually lively—well, not exactly lively, but there are at least a few more people.
One of them was Inspector Lestrade, who stared silently at the zombie whose limbs had been broken by Levi, writhing and howling on the ground.
There was also an elderly man dressed in a black tuxedo, who looked like a nobleman's butler. He stood politely to the side, staring at the zombie, a complex mix of emotions flashing in his eyes—Li Wei didn't know who he was, only that Katie had gone out to make a phone call, and then this man appeared, bringing…
Li Wei silently turned his head and looked at a group of soldiers beside him. They were wearing black coats and masks, and did not look like the kind of troops that were openly present.
Hmm, it's probably some kind of clandestine force?
The old man didn't speak, but silently raised his hand. As he did so, the soldiers simultaneously raised their guns.
Then, the old man waved his right hand.
"Bang bang bang bang!"
A series of gunshots rang out, instantly turning the zombie in front of them into a sieve of shreds. Even so, it continued to writhe and let out a beast-like roar.
Seeing this, even the soldiers who had remained calm seemed to show some unease. Li Wei clearly noticed that several of them tensed up, stiffened, and became flustered. The old man also seemed to notice this; he turned his head and glanced at the soldiers, who quickly straightened up and maintained their stance.
Then, the old man withdrew his gaze and walked to Li Wei's side.
What are your thoughts? How should we deal with this monster?
"My personal suggestion is to use fire."
Li Wei didn't know why he was asking him, but he would answer if he was asked.
"…………………"
The old man nodded, then made a gesture, and Li Wei saw a soldier come out, take a bottle from his waist, and throw it at the monster.
The bottle smashed into the monster's body and then exploded with a "boom," instantly unleashing scorching flames that quickly engulfed its entire body. The monster trembled even more violently, screaming in agony, but having lost its limbs, it was powerless to resist and could only struggle before turning to ashes.
The old man watched quietly as the zombie turned to charcoal, then made a gesture. The soldier, holding a long spear, stepped forward and poked the blackened corpse with his bayonet.
Yes, it's completely charred.
Only then did the old man turn his gaze away and look at Li Wei again.
"Are you investigating this case?"
"Yes."
Li Wei nodded.
"Very good, finish it."
The old man stared at Li Wei.
"Find the culprit who committed this tragedy and make them disappear from this world completely."
Upon hearing this, Li Wei raised an eyebrow.
"Shouldn't they arrest him?"
The old man shook his head, then bowed slightly, like a proper butler bowing to a guest, and gave Li Wei a salute.
"Please take care of the young lady."
After saying this, the old man turned and left.
