I, a cultivator, have ended up in the wizarding world.
Chapter 12 Lesson
Chapter 12 Lesson
Ten days passed in a flash, and it was time for the class that Professor Clark had mentioned.
Jemin got up very early today, and after breakfast, he followed the instructions in the student handbook toward the alchemy workshop.
The alchemy workshop of Norren Academy is located in a relatively remote corner of the academy district. It does not have the eye-catching appearance of a tower, but instead appears low and heavy, like a solid fortress rooted in the earth.
The exterior walls are made of a dark-colored rock covered with basic runes.
Stepping through the workshop's doors, the interior space is spacious, filled with the smells of metal, minerals, plants, and various strange chemical reactions. The smell is somewhat peculiar, but not pungent.
Seeing that there was still plenty of time before the scheduled class time, Jieming decided to wander around inside.
The workshop has a complex internal structure, resembling a giant beehive, composed of countless rooms and corridors of varying sizes.
There are warehouses filled with raw materials, high-temperature furnace areas, potion preparation areas filled with distillation equipment and test tubes, and numerous basic and advanced experimental areas.
Their first lesson took place in a spacious basic alchemy laboratory located on the east side of the workshop.
The entire laboratory is constructed with silver-white metal walls and contains dozens of sturdy workbenches. Each workbench is equipped with an adjustable magical lighting device, a set of fixed metal clamps, and an exhaust chimney.
When Jemin entered the basic alchemy laboratory, he was somewhat surprised to find that there were quite a few people inside.
However, judging from the badges on these people's robes, the only real alchemy apprentices are Jemin, Amy, and another male apprentice who looks somewhat arrogant.
The badges on the others indicated that they were apprentices of other schools of thought. Jemin even saw a genius apprentice who had achieved a level nine purity of soul in the aptitude test and had been directly accepted as a disciple by a soul-type mentor.
The other apprentices seemed surprised by his appearance as well, and a group of people were now surrounding the genius.
Jemin didn't intend to get involved, and instead found a relatively secluded spot against the wall.
To his surprise, Amy was also there.
"You didn't go with those people?" Jemin asked, sounding somewhat surprised.
In the past few days, when he occasionally ran into Amy in the cafeteria, they would chat with each other, and he confirmed that the girl was indeed a social butterfly.
No matter what kind of person the other person is, she can find a suitable way to communicate, which even made Jemin suspect that this girl might have some kind of supernatural power.
Amy greeted Jemin and, upon hearing his question, casually shrugged: "On the contrary, in my opinion, now is not a good time to build relationships. If I went up now, I would only be a background figure at best."
Jemin nodded noncommittally; after all, the other person was the expert in this field, and he certainly wasn't qualified to give unsolicited advice.
"Speaking of which, there are only three of us in this year's alchemy program. So what are the rest of you doing?"
"They are certainly here to learn alchemy, but it's just an elective for them. As far as I know, besides this genius in the soul system, the young lady of the Augusta family with the ninth-level talent and the young master of the Horn family with the eighth-level talent also seem to have chosen other logistics-related schools for electives."
"Wow, you can even take it as an elective..."
Looking at the genius with a soul purity level of nine, Jemin recalled what Wizard Jack had told him. It seemed that the logistics department was indeed the orthodox department of Norn Workshop; even if these geniuses chose the combat department, they would still be assigned to the logistics department for further study.
As for the special care given to these top geniuses, Jemin understood perfectly. Although the wizard Jack said that a wizard's talent was not important, having gone through the introductory meditation method, he knew even better that having a good talent could give one a head start in the early stages.
In cultivation, if you're fast at one step, you'll be fast at every step; only a few can truly turn the tables.
"I'm so envious. I wish I could take courses from other schools of thought too," Jemin said with some emotion.
Alchemy is already a good fit for his needs, but it would be even better if potion-making or runic arts were added.
“If you want to take it as an elective, of course you can.” Amy looked at Jemin: “Our alchemy course is held once every five days, and you can use the rest of the time as you like. So as long as you complete the course assignments given by the teacher, you can go to study in other different schools of thought by handing in some points.”
"Oh? The admissions handbook didn't mention anything like that." Jemin's eyes lit up. "What about the credits for taking other courses?"
"Not many. I heard that the basic knowledge of each school of thought in the Logistics Department only requires five points, but teaching materials and such need to be purchased separately..."
The two stopped talking after a short while, because their mentor, Clark, was already standing in front of the podium.
He still had that same bald, monocle-wearing, and rigid appearance, and wore an alchemical robe that, although it looked old, was washed until it shone.
Upon seeing Clark's arrival, the apprentices surrounding the level nine soul talent fell silent, scurrying like quails to find the nearest experimental table and stand still.
"Welcome to Alchemy, one of the most stable and foundational disciplines at Norren Academy." Instructor Clark paid no attention to the reactions of his students, speaking calmly and unhurriedly.
"Here, you will learn the core of alchemy—understanding, decomposition, and reconstruction."
"Understanding is the cognition of the essence of matter, analyzing its elemental composition and energy properties. Decomposition is breaking matter down into its basic constituent units. Reconstruction is, according to your will, using spiritual power to guide energy and matter, reshaping them into new forms or endowing them with new properties."
Instructor Clark's gaze swept over each apprentice present, his tone becoming serious: "Alchemy demands extremely high levels of mental strength, and your mental strength is your strongest tool. The precision with which you control your mental strength determines the upper limit of your alchemy skills."
He walked to a small workbench next to the podium, on which sat a rather heavy-looking, irregularly shaped block of gold metal.
“You should have already previewed basic alchemy, so let’s not waste time. Today, our first lesson is basic shaping,” Instructor Clark said calmly. “This is one of the most fundamental practices in alchemy, controlling the shape of objects through mental power. We will practice with gold.”
Upon hearing the word "gold," some apprentices showed expressions of surprise or excitement.
In the mortal world, gold is an extremely precious hard currency.
Mentor Clark seemed to see through their thoughts and explained indifferently, "Gold is not rare in the wizarding world. Having controlled several planes, we have countless ways to obtain this metal. Even when your alchemy skills reach a certain level, you can convert other substances into gold."
"Compared to other metals, gold is stable and has a simple composition, making it easier to analyze using alchemy. Although it is more resistant to mental energy and more difficult to control, this resistance also means that even if you fail, it will not trigger a violent energy reaction, nor will it explode or produce toxic gases. At most, the material will be damaged or its shape will be distorted. It is the most suitable and safest practice material for beginners."
