Chapter 11 Anmin is leaving

While everyone in the dormitory was marveling at the sight, no one noticed that a tall figure had stopped in the shadows of the corridor outside the door.

Liang Yi was just passing by when he heard An Min mentioned inside, and he stopped in his tracks without realizing it.

The sounds of conversation inside clearly reached his ears.

"Those women really said some nasty things..."

"Comrade An is tough, well done!"

"Exactly, the regimental commander handled this matter..."

Liang Yi's face remained expressionless, with his usual cold and hard features.

He habitually reached into his pocket, looking for cigarettes, but then remembered he couldn't smoke in the corridor, so his hand stopped.

When Wang Xiaozhu spoke in An Min's tone, Liang Yi couldn't help but think of An Min's little face.

She was naive yet calm; despite being very angry, she retorted with composure.

He frowned almost imperceptibly.

So, not only did she not cry, but she was also ridiculed to her face like this?

It seems it's still because of him.

A completely unfamiliar emotion, like being pricked by a tiny thorn, rose up, extremely slight yet impossible to ignore.

That feeling... was a bit irritating, and a bit... indescribable discomfort.

Is it responsibility? Or something else? Liang Yi himself couldn't tell.

All he knew was that his actions that day had caused a girl to suffer injustice for no reason.

This contradicts his consistent code of conduct.

Liang Yi never implicates the innocent in his actions.

Taking a deep breath, Liang Yi suppressed the strange feeling in his heart, strode forward, and continued walking towards his office with a blank expression, as if he hadn't heard anything.

But his steps seemed a little heavier than usual.

Life went on as usual.

Training, meetings, and reviewing documents.

He was so busy with his daily work that he didn't even think about it anymore.

There was no response from Director Yang, which made him even happier to have some peace and quiet.

He was never one to be sentimental, and he certainly didn't think that such a minor issue as a failed blind date was worth dwelling on.

A few days later, one evening, as darkness fell.

Liang Yi had just returned from the training ground on the back mountain. After checking the sentry posts, he took a shortcut back to the regimental headquarters dormitory.

This path passes over that barren slope on the outskirts, not far from those dilapidated cave dwellings.

He didn't even realize that his steps had taken a different turn, heading towards the row of cave dwellings.

Perhaps subconsciously he wanted to see if the girl he had abandoned and who had stood up for him was truly unaffected, just as Wang Xiaozhu claimed.
Or perhaps, she just wanted to confirm if she was still there?

After all, conditions there are indeed harsh.

He moved quietly, taking advantage of the deepening twilight, like a well-trained scout, and silently approached the dilapidated cave dwelling where Anmin lived.

The dim light from the oil lamp shone through the paper windows.

Liang Yi stood outside the window, his sharp gaze fixed on the inside.

Anmin's figure could be seen swaying on the window paper.

She seems to be... packing something?
Liang Yi's heart sank.

With her back to the window, she was placing a slightly worn wicker trunk on the kang (a heated brick bed) and opening the lid.

Then, she began to put the neatly folded clothes on the kang (a heated brick bed) into the kang one by one.

They moved swiftly and without the slightest hesitation.

There was also a bundle next to it, which seemed to contain some odds and ends.

Is she leaving?
This thought struck Liang Yi like a bullet.

Is she really leaving?
Because of what happened that day?

Because you couldn't stand the hardship here?
Or is it because he couldn't stand the gossip?

Or... is it because of him?
Liang Yi's breath hitched for a moment.

He subconsciously tensed up, and a multitude of thoughts flashed through his mind.

Where is she going? She can't go back to Haicheng, where can a young woman like her go?

In this chaotic situation... if she leaves like this, what if something happens...? He was the one who offended her, and Director Yang kindly introduced her to him.

Now that people have been angered and left, Liang Yi is to blame! What kind of mess is this?
"Someone?"

Just as Liang Yi was struggling with his decision, An Min was the first to notice the commotion outside.

She put down what she was holding, pushed open the door, and went out.

Because she was going to stay here, Anmin asked Qin Shulan to help her find two people to tidy up the place.

With a door installed and paper windows pasted on, it at least looks like a place where people can live.

After seeing clearly who was standing outside, An Min smiled faintly.

Don't tell her that Liang Yi came to apologize for his rude behavior that day.

Anmin stood at the door, the dim light outlining her slender yet straight back.

She looked at Liang Yi standing in the shadows, and there was no grievance or anger in his almond-shaped eyes as she had expected.

Instead, it carried a hint of understanding and... an almost imperceptible sarcasm.

"Commander Liang? What are you doing here?"

Her voice was clear and melodious, like a mountain stream, with a hint of coolness. Yet, the faint smile at the corner of her lips softened this aloofness, making her enigmatic.

Liang Yi's tall figure appeared particularly silent in the twilight.

His Adam's apple bobbed almost imperceptibly.

Those inexplicable emotions, now exposed by the person involved, seemed to have nowhere to hide.

Especially her eyes, which were crystal clear, yet seemed to see right through his momentary loss of composure.

He forced himself to maintain his usual cold and hard expression, only his jawline was more taut than usual.

"Passing by."

The two words were uttered forcefully, like two stones.

"Oh?"

An Min gently drew out the last syllable, her gaze seemingly unintentionally sweeping over his slightly stiff posture.

She turned slightly to the side, letting the light from the doorway pass by, so that he could see more clearly the rattan trunk and clothes spread out on the kang (heated brick bed) inside the room.

"Commander Liang, you've taken a really detour."

These words sound like a statement, yet they clearly carry a barb.

Liang Yi felt that invisible thorn prick him again, this time more clearly than before.

His sharp gaze swept past her and landed directly on the wicker trunk inside the room.

"Pack your things?"

He asked in a low, emotionless voice, but his eyes were fixed on the box like a hawk locked onto its target.

An Min followed his gaze and glanced back. When she turned back, the teasing smile in her eyes seemed to deepen slightly.

Like ripples spreading across a lake after a pebble has been thrown in.

"Yes, pack some things."

Her tone was flat, as if she were talking about something completely ordinary.

Liang Yi's heart sank even further.

He took half a step forward, his tall figure almost completely enveloping An Min in shadow, bringing an invisible sense of oppression.

"Where to go?"

He pressed on, his tone unconsciously taking on a slightly interrogative quality.

An Min tilted her head slightly to meet his scrutinizing gaze, showing no fear.

The dim light shone from behind her, casting a soft, warm glow on her fair profile, which only made the light in her eyes appear even brighter and sharper.

The two stood side by side, one tall and one short, one as hard as iron and the other as flexible as water.

A silent standoff spread across the narrow entrance to the cave dwelling, and the air seemed to freeze.

"Commander Liang."

She spoke softly, her voice low, yet each word was clear.

"You seem quite concerned about where I am?"

She paused deliberately, her almond-shaped eyes staring directly into his deep, pool-like gaze, as if trying to pierce through his cold, hard shell.

Minmin: She has Liang Yi firmly under her control.
