Chapter 35 She's worried about you

Dongxiang Village... again, Dongxiang Village.

Liang Yi certainly wanted to help, but where would he get the supplies to do so?

The Northwest is inherently poor, and villages like Dongxiang Village are numerous.

If we keep helping them, other villages will hear the news and come over, and they won't need to eat or drink anymore.

The only solution is to ask higher authorities to step in and help alleviate poverty.

After all, this was beyond the capacity of their camp to provide assistance.

Liang Yi waved his hand, signaling Xiao Wang to leave: "I understand, you go and deal with Zheng Tianyou's matter first."

Xiao Wang nodded and jogged away.

The door closed, shutting out the tense atmosphere outside.

Only An Min and Liang Yi remained in the room. Liang Yi turned around, his gaze returning to An Min's face.

She remained standing there, her back ramrod straight, like a blade of grass that refused to bow its head in the fierce wind.

“Anmin, all I can say is that this is not a joke. If you have already made up your mind, then I support you.”

Finally, Liang Yi said those words.

Anmin was even more stubborn than him; what could he do even if he disagreed?

Just like she said, since Dongxiang Village is already like this, why not let her give it a try?

What if it happens?
If it succeeds, Anmin will be the biggest contributor, and the benefits for Anmin will only increase.

An Min's eyes lit up, and she happily went forward to hug Liang Yi.

The girl in his arms was so sweet and soft that it melted Liang Yi's heart.

He really couldn't do anything with her; he couldn't hit her or scold her.

Ironically, he himself chose this ancestor.

"Liang Yi! You are the very best person in the world!"

An Min was genuinely happy; she would do anything with Liang Yi.

Even if he tried to stop her at first, it was because he didn't want her to get hurt.

Liang Yi froze for only a moment before reaching out and wrapping his arms around An Min's waist.

"Alright, alright, but I need to tell you in advance that this is not an easy thing."

"Don't make promises you can't keep, or you'll give your fellow villagers hope only to disappoint them later."

"Also, some people might have opinions about you. Don't take it to heart. If you feel wronged, come back."

He gave earnest instructions, as if he were instructing his own daughter.

Anmin buried her head in his neck and nodded slightly.

She felt sweet and warm inside.

……

The next day, Liang Yi told Director Yang about An Min's plan.

Director Yang was also surprised, but later felt quite gratified.

She also thought that Anmin was used to a good life.

The work in the Education and Culture Department is stable and leisurely, with no hard or tiring tasks.

That's a place everyone longs for; people have argued countless times over a spot.

This was the first time Liang Yi had ever used a favor he hadn't done in years to ask her for help.

Unexpectedly, Anmin refused and insisted on going to Dongxiang Village to farm.

This decision was something Director Yang hadn't expected at all.

"Liang Yi, your wife is no ordinary woman."

"She doesn't want to drag you into this."

Director Yang nodded and said this, while Liang Yi smiled without saying a word.

Anmin was thinking of him and didn't want him to be accused of abusing his power.

And so, the news that Anmin was going to go to Dongxiang Village to farm spread like wildfire.

The sun beat down scorchingly on the tiny open space in the family compound.

Several women sat around in the shade of a tree, sewing shoe soles, while a few others were picking vegetables, their eyes glancing unintentionally toward Anmin's door.

"Have you heard?" The quick-tongued Aunt Li nudged Aunt Wang next to her with her elbow, her voice neither too loud nor too soft, just loud enough for everyone around to hear.

"Commander Liang's wife insists on going to Dongxiang Village to farm!"

"Huh? Farming?"

Aunt Wang almost dropped the green beans in her hand, her mouth agape wide enough to fit an egg.

"Her? That Anmin who can't lift a finger, who's afraid of stepping on ants when she walks? Going to farm in that godforsaken place, Dongxiang Village? She's crazy!"

"you do not say!"

Another woman holding a child curled her lip: "I heard that Commander Liang arranged a job for her in the Department of Culture and Education. That's so respectable, sheltered from the wind and rain. Why isn't she happy? Why does she have to go and eat that yellow sand?"

"Hmph, I think they're just bored and have nothing better to do!"

Zhang Guifen's voice suddenly interrupted.

She slammed the winnowing basket on the ground, scattering many of the dried bean husks inside.

"She should take a piss and look at herself in the mirror to see what she is! The land in that eastern village doesn't even grow grass! Is that land for humans to cultivate? It's land cultivated by the King of Hell! With her abilities? Can she grow gold or flowers?"

"Don't come crawling back crying and begging for your parents, making a fool of yourself!"

One harsh word after another rained down upon them.

Although the other women didn't speak as harshly as Zhang Guifen, the contempt and amusement in their eyes were exactly the same.

Anmin pushed open her door without even glancing at the group of people.

She carried a worn-out cloth bag in her hand, walked steadily, and headed straight for the dirt road leading out of the residential compound.

The sunlight shone directly on her face, and she squinted slightly, but didn't even frown.

Seeing her attitude, Zhang Guifen became even more furious.

She darted to the middle of the road in a few steps, hands on her hips, looking like a gatekeeper blocking the way: "Hey! Miss An, in the middle of the day, carrying a tattered bag, are you really going to 'clear wasteland' in the East Village?"

She deliberately emphasized the word "reclaiming wasteland," making her mockery all too obvious.

Anmin stopped and glanced at her.

"Go and see."

An Min only said three words, her tone calm.

"Look? Ha!"

Zhang Guifen's voice suddenly rose as if she had heard the biggest joke in the world, becoming shrill and piercing.

"Can you see any grain? Can you see any water? Anmin, I'm telling you right now! If you can grow a single seedling in that land in Dongxiang Village, I, Zhang Guifen, will chop off my head and give it to you to sit on!"

She pointed to the ground beneath her feet, which had been trampled so hard that not even grass could grow there.

Even the experts said there was no hope, but Zhang Guifen refused to believe that Anmin could be saved.

If Anmin can't grow it, Liang Yi will definitely lose face, and she'll drive the couple away!

The snickers around them grew louder, filled with undisguised contempt.

An Min ignored Zhang Guifen's clamor.

She bypassed the woman blocking her way and headed straight for Dongcun Village.

Anmin just didn't want to stay in the family compound and listen to them talking nonsense all day long.

However, when Anmin arrived in Dongxiang Village, she discovered that things were more serious than she had imagined.

Anmin stood at the edge of the largest field at the entrance of the village.

It's less a field and more a cracked wound repeatedly lashed by the scorching sun.

The grayish-yellow land is cracked with countless bottomless fissures, meandering menacingly all the way to the foot of the barren hillside in the distance.

There wasn't a trace of moisture in the air, only the dry, pungent smell of dust.

Several emaciated villagers squatted at the foot of an earthen wall not far away, gazing into the distance.

Upon seeing Anmin, he merely raised his eyelids, seemingly lacking even the strength to greet her.

From the east end of the village, the faint sound of a woman's suppressed sobs could be heard, interspersed with a few weak bleats of sheep, adding to the desolate atmosphere.

Zhang Guifen was right; this really was pioneering work.

"Sister...you, did you come to bring us food?"

Minmin is such a good baby, waaaaah!
