Chapter 1 Concubine
In February, the spring chill lingered.

In the afternoon, silver charcoal burned in the bedroom of a three-courtyard house on East Street in Chang'an City.

Inside the red gauze curtain.

On the nanmu bed, a beautiful woman nestled in the man's arms, absorbing the warmth emanating from his body.

Lu Jinshi opened her eyes and looked at the man in front of her. He had sword-like eyebrows and bright eyes, and was as handsome as an immortal.

She thought to herself that he was indeed the man she had carefully chosen to have a child with her. She was already satisfied if their son, Xiao Zhang, would have six or seven parts of Rong Yi's looks.

Rong Yi opened his eyes and saw Lu Jinshi looking at him. He smiled faintly and said, "Awake? You've been traveling for almost two months and only arrived today. Why don't you sleep a little longer? We can go visit your grandfather later."

Lu Jinshi chuckled and shook his head. "I won't visit my grandfather today. I've come all this way, so I'll have to wait until after I take a bath. It won't be too late to visit him tomorrow."

Rong Yi smiled and said, "Didn't you say your grandfather was on his deathbed? You've traveled all the way from Shanyin City to Chang'an. Aren't you afraid that if you don't go today, you won't be able to see your grandfather one last time?"

Lu Jinshi said, “When I was three years old, my parents divorced and I went to Shanyin City with my mother. In the past eighteen years, my father’s family has not sent a single letter. When I received the letter that my grandfather was seriously ill, I brought my five-month-old baby to Chang’an. Even if I can only offer incense in front of the coffin, it is my way of fulfilling my filial duty.”

Rong Yi said, "I will accompany you to visit your grandfather tomorrow."

Lu Jinshi lowered his eyes and said, "No need."

Rong Yi frowned slightly and asked, "Why?"

Lu Jinshi was too embarrassed to say that Rong Yi was just a candidate for a sperm donor because she was burdened with the fate of being a widow and could not get married.

She had no intention of telling Rong Yi that she was the eldest daughter of the Yongxing Marquis's family.

Although they had been lovers for two years and had a child, she still intended to leave the father and keep the child, and there was no need for Rong Yi to know her true identity.

Lu Jinshi said, "In the end, our relationship is still something that can't be revealed to others."

Upon hearing Lu Jinshi's words, Rong Yi frowned slightly and said, "I have already communicated with my parents. I can give you a proper status, after all, you have given birth to Zhang'er for me."

Lu Jinshi chuckled softly. Rong Yi was going to give her a title? But she hadn't decided to give Rong Yi a title.

Although it is certainly better for Zhang'er to have both a father and a mother than to lose her father and keep her son, even Lu Jinshi began to believe in her curse of bringing misfortune to her husband.

Her first fiancé died suddenly just before their wedding. Her second fiancé fell seriously ill shortly after their engagement, but recovered after breaking off the engagement.

Therefore, everyone in Shanyin City said that the stepdaughter of the headmaster of Tianzhang Academy was destined to bring misfortune to her husband.

Lu Jinshi was still unmarried when he turned nineteen, so he decided to find a handsome young scholar from his stepfather's academy to marry.

Lu Jinshi carefully selected Rong Yi, and he did not disappoint her, as they had a well-behaved and adorable son.

Lu Jinshi thought that if he could recover his health, he could have a daughter with Rong Yi, which would make him have both a son and a daughter.

Rong Yi twirled Lu Jinshi's long hair with his fingers: "How about you come with me to see my parents tomorrow? Once you have a proper status, I can openly accompany you to visit your grandfather."

Lu Jinshi was taken aback. "See your parents?"

Rong Yi nodded slightly and said, "Zhang'er is seven months old now, and I should give you a proper status. Tomorrow, you will come with me to see your parents and we can discuss our marriage." Lu Jinshi felt a little embarrassed when she heard Rong Yi's words. Her biological father was the heir of the Marquis of Yongxing, her mother was Princess Mingzhu of the Wang family of different surnames, and her stepfather was also the famous Confucian scholar and the dean of Tianzhang Academy in Jiangnan.

Nearly half of the students from Tianzhang Academy passed the imperial examinations each year, and many ministers in the court were her stepfather's students.

Lu Jinshi considered himself to be of noble birth, and since he was leaving Rong Yi's father and keeping his son, he didn't need to concern himself with Rong Yi's family background. However, if they were to get married, he would have to consider it more carefully.

Lu Jinshi then said, "If you and I are to get married, we need to consider this carefully. After all, I don't know your family background, and I wonder if your parents are easy to get along with?"

Rong Yi stroked Lu Jinshi's head, feeling slightly guilty, and said, "Jin'er, we're not husband and wife."

Lu Jinshi frowned and looked at Rong Yi, "What do you mean by not being husband and wife?"

Rong Yi said with a hint of guilt, "I only received the news a few days ago. While I was away from Chang'an, my father had already arranged a marriage for me..."

Lu Jinshi scoffed, pulled away from Rong Yi's embrace, sat up, and looked at Rong Yi: "Your father has arranged a marriage for you? Then why did you say you would give me a proper status?"

Rong Yi said softly, "Yes, I will get my parents' approval to have you as my concubine."

Lu Jinshi was taken aback when she heard him say this, and for a moment thought she had misheard: "What did you say? You want me to be your concubine?"

Rong Yi nodded and said, "Yes, for Zhang'er's sake, my parents will definitely agree to let you be my concubine."

Lu Jinshi said coldly, "Rong Yi? You actually want me to be your concubine? Do you need your parents' permission to make me your concubine?"

Even if Rong Yi is unaware that she is the daughter of Princess Mingzhu of the Prince An's Mansion and the eldest daughter of the Marquis of Yongxing's Mansion, she should know that she is the eldest daughter of Tianzhang Academy.

She was his mentor's stepdaughter; how dare he belittle and demean her like that?

She actually wants me to be her concubine?
And in such a condescending tone?
Seeing Lu Jinshi's expression change upon seeing it in his arms, Rong Yi said, "Jin'er, although you are a concubine, considering that you have given birth to my eldest son, I can grant you the position of secondary wife after my principal wife enters the household..."

Before Rong Yi could utter the word "concubine"...

Snap.

Lu Jinshi slapped Rong Yi across the face.

Lu Jinshi stood up and looked at Rong Yi, her beautiful face showing a hint of anger. She said, "Make me a concubine? Do I need your permission? How ridiculous!"

Rong Yi couldn't believe that Lu Jinshi would slap him. His starry eyes narrowed slightly: "Lu Jinshi, do you know who I am...?"

Lu Jinshi interrupted Rong Yi, angrily saying, "I don't know. I only know that you actually want me to be your concubine. This slap is too lenient. Caiyun and Fengyun, find a servant to throw him out!"

Upon hearing Lu Jinshi's instructions, the two maids outside hurriedly went to find the servant.

Rong Yi frowned and looked at Lu Jinshi, saying, "Jin'er, when you meet my parents tomorrow, you will know that making you my concubine is not a mistreatment."

Lu Jinshi frowned and said, "Isn't being a concubine treating me badly enough? Should I thank you for being kind to me as a concubine and for making my Zhang'er a son born out of wedlock?"
