Chapter 6 Family
Lunch consisted of half a coarse rice cake that could break a tooth, and everyone groaned in despair upon seeing the meal.

Xin Nian remained unmoved; such were the living conditions of exiled criminals in ancient times.

According to ancient laws, the imperial court would cover all the food expenses for prisoners on their journey. If they're already facing exile, who needs a Ferrari?
The imperial court would never allow exiled prisoners to be fed enough; they were just guaranteed to be neither starving nor able to escape on the road. That was about right.

The daily food allowance was only half that of ordinary people, and they were only issued one set of clothes and shoes, with virtually no change of clothes or shoes.

If you can do it, you can do it; if you can't, you die. The more you go on the journey, the more frequent the disasters and illnesses become. Those who manage to reach their destination safely will be severely injured, if not dead!
Xin Nian took out some white flour pancakes from the package and gave three to her father, who had squeezed next to her and her mother.

They took out the dried meat, wrapped it in a flatbread, and the family of three, oblivious to everyone else, showed off their full stomachs.

"Dad, put these shoes on, they have thick soles." Xin Nian took out a pair of thick-soled straw sandals from her bag and gave them to Xin Wenyuan.

"And what about you and your daughter?" After walking all morning, many of the pampered gentlemen and ladies had blisters on their heels.

They had never worn straw sandals in their lives. They were so rough and painful that most of them had blisters on their feet.

Convicts were only allowed to wear straw sandals; even if they had extra cloth shoes, the guards wouldn't let them change them.

And this is just the beginning; it will only get more difficult from now on.

Xin Nian secretly told her father, "I'm fine. A little bit of my superpower has returned, which is just enough to heal my foot."

“Mom is right beside me, I can treat her anytime, anywhere. If you go ahead with those men, I won’t be able to take care of you, so take care of yourself.”

Xin Wenyuan nodded, put on thick-soled straw sandals, and tucked the old ones into his pocket. "Give me another flatbread. I'll mix it with water and then force it down your brother's throat."

Even if that kid is unconscious, he still needs to eat something; we can't let him go hungry forever.

The family of three ate and whispered amongst themselves, creating a strange little group atmosphere. They didn't think about anyone else at all, until...

Little Xin Mohan's intermittent sobs reached my ears.

Xie Ninglan slapped her thigh and whispered, "Oh dear, I forgot we have an extra child."

Xin Wenyuan glanced guiltily into the distance, only to be met with an angry glare from his third brother, Xin Wen'an.

Xin Nian touched her nose. It's understandable that her parents couldn't adapt to their new identity after transmigrating.

This family of four has been like this since the apocalypse: when there are good things, who would give them to outsiders? They would definitely make sure their own family members are fed and watered first.

Three sheepskin water bladders, just enough for one person in the family of three. A packet of white flour cakes—to be honest, Xin Nian never thought of sharing them.

Don't blame her for being cold and indifferent; people who have lived through the apocalypse are used to this.

Given these difficult conditions, everything must be prioritized for their family; as for other things, we'll see.

Xin Wenyuan quickly rushed over, picked up his youngest son, whose face was covered in tears, and comforted him.

Little Xin Mohan is really sad.

Just now, just now, he witnessed his parents and sister sitting together intimately, the three of them eating and chatting, completely forgetting about him!

He's an adopted child, he must have been picked up from the trash can by his parents, waaaaah!
The little one was crying and hiccuping at the same time, and his stomach was making a rumbling, hungry noise.

Xie Ninglan's face flushed. While comforting the child, she took the dried meat and white flour cake from her daughter's hand. "Don't cry, don't cry. Han, Han'er, right? Eat first. Auntie... Oh, Mom has some food here. The dried meat tastes alright."

Xin Mohan was heartbroken, his eyes brimming with tears, and he asked his mother in despair, "Mother, was your son adopted?"

Xie Ninglan almost spat out her saliva, "Oh no, how could you be adopted? You were born from your mother's proper ten months of pregnancy!"

"Then why? Why didn't Father say a single word to his son the whole way?"

Xin Wenyuan's lips twitched. He had been diligently cultivating his supernatural abilities like his daughter, and besides... he had indeed forgotten about his youngest son, cough cough cough.

What a miracle! A man nearing sixty suddenly looks twenty years younger, and his wife even gave birth to a son! Wow, this is truly an amazing thing!
Xie Ninglan readily admitted her mistake, "It's my fault, I was wrong. Don't be angry. Fill your tummy first, we still have a long way to go. I'll definitely tell your father to take you with him this afternoon, and I promise I won't ignore you."

Xin Mohan sobbed, "Really?"

"It's definitely real, it couldn't be more real." Xie Ninglan nodded repeatedly.

Little Xin Mohan was really hungry, and he was chewing the white flour jerky in big mouthfuls.

"Slow down, have a drink of water. Nobody's going to take it from you." Xie Ninglan looked at the child, a faint pang of sadness welling up in her heart.

What a tragedy! Such a young child was exiled! The evil feudal system!
Xin Nian suddenly tugged at her parents, and when they looked up, they saw the old escort officer with a beaming smile coming up to them.

"Fourth Madam, is that right? Come with me, someone wants to see you."

Xin Wenyuan immediately became alert and raised his hand to block his wife and daughter. "Who goes there?"

"It's not like I'm seeing you, why are you asking me all this?" Xiao Jia pushed Xin Wenyuan and said impatiently, "Let's go."

Xin Nian quickly grabbed her father's arm and helped Xie Ninglan up, "I'll go with my mother."

The old escort raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over Xin Nian's face before he nodded. "That works too."

Xin Mohan called out "Mother" nervously, and her small body, which rushed forward, was firmly held by Xin Wenyuan.

"What's the panic? It's a good thing!" The old escort grinned from ear to ear.

Xin Wenyuan and Xie Ninglan exchanged a glance, nodded secretly, and watched the mother and daughter leave with the escorts.

The crowd stirred for a moment, and everyone craned their necks to look behind the earthen slope, where they could vaguely see a horse-drawn carriage parked.

Before Xie Ninglan and her daughter even reached the carriage, they saw an elderly woman in plain clothes being helped down from the carriage by a maid.

The two women exchanged a glance, and Xie Ninglan suddenly opened her mouth wide, staring at the woman's face in astonishment.

"Lan'er." The old lady ran forward with tears streaming down her face and hugged Xie Ninglan tightly, sobbing uncontrollably.

“My poor girl, why are you so stubborn? I told you to get a divorce and come home, and you could bring my Niannian with you. Why won’t you listen? You’re really ruining your own life and my granddaughter’s life.”

"Mother?" Xie Ninglan's mind went blank, and she called out in a trembling voice.

Since transmigrating, she has not received any information from the original owner or this era, but now, seeing the original owner's mother, she trembles for no reason.

This mother looks so much like her deceased biological mother! For some reason, it's as if she can immediately empathize with the original owner's feelings.

"My poor daughter, why did you have to be so foolish?"
