Chapter 22 I Can't Take It Anymore
Theodore skimmed through the report and went to the medical examiner's office, but unfortunately Samuel had left work early (?) today, and the medical examiner's office was already locked.
When he got back, he poured himself a cup of coffee and saw Bernie waving at him from the interrogation room.
The Bucks' manager had circled the head coach's name on the list.
The head coach lives in the affluent East Side neighborhood. The school not only pays him a substantial salary but also provides him with accommodation. The villa in the East Side was provided by the school.
Bernie made a phone call, and a friend from the East District Police Station 'tricked' the head coach into coming over.
They told the head coach that his offensive coach, 'Mr. Bucks,' had been detained by the Western Conference Precinct and asked him to come in to bail him out.
The head coach arrived looking travel-worn, driving an inconspicuous dark blue Ford sedan.
The head coach had a thick beard, was tall and strong, and had arms that could support a horse running on them. After realizing he had been cheated, he just frowned and turned to leave, but was stopped by Bernie and the others.
Theodore observed the head coach's expression and shouted, "You make your players inject testosterone, but you don't get any yourself?"
The head coach turned around and sneered, "They're the ones going on the field, not me!"
Bernie looked over in surprise. Theodore shook his head slightly at him, but Bernie remained surprised, his eyes filled with confusion, and he repeatedly asked him for confirmation.
Theodore changed his expression and said seriously, "Who on the coaching staff is using testosterone?"
The head coach just sneered and didn't say anything at all.
Theodore briefly explained the situation, and the head coach seemed surprised. He frowned and pondered for a moment before saying, "Holt."
Theodore immediately looked at Bernie.
Calvin Holt, the football enthusiast, joined the coaching staff through a community-based process.
The head coach said, "He got the testosterone from him."
The case involved a murder, but the head coach generously overlooked being scammed and patiently explained...
"It was a game where the opposing team was full of big guys. Our defense was being knocked down and we couldn't stop them at all. On offense, our quarterback could only keep retreating... In short, it was a crushing defeat. They completely overwhelmed us in every way."
"After the match, I went to the referee team to appeal because I suspected that the other team had concealed their age. But the appeal failed."
"Later, Holt quietly told me that the opposing coaching staff had been providing testosterone to the players."
“At first I disagreed, but as the competition progressed, our physical disadvantage became more and more obvious. Almost all the teams were using testosterone, so we had to follow suit.”
"He's the one who got the testosterone; he's in charge of distributing it to the players."
The head coach spoke much more logically than Mr. Bucks, and mentioned that Holt had been in a bad mood lately, often snapping at the players. Upon hearing this, Bernie immediately called a friend in the North and had Holt brought over.
A few minutes later the phone rang, and his friend told him that Holt was not home.
Bernie didn't even have time to thank him before hanging up and calling Wenner. As soon as the call connected, he immediately recounted what had happened, concluding with...
“Boss, I’m pretty sure Calvin Holt is the killer we’re looking for.”
There was a brief silence on the phone.
A moment later, "Organize manpower to prepare for a large-scale search. I'll be at the station immediately."
…………
It was already late at night.
The homicide squad's movements alarmed many people.
Kahor arrived at the scene in a hurry to inquire about the situation.
Wenner was very cautious, only saying that he was arresting the murderer of 600528, without mentioning that he might be a serial killer.
Kahle's eyes darted around as he quietly summoned his subordinates and instructed them to interrogate Howard Jr. overnight, ensuring a complete case report was produced before the start of the workday at dawn.
His subordinates were taken aback by this bold decision. They stared at Kahor in surprise, about to speak, but were dismissed by him.
Kahor turned around and saw Wenner standing not far away, looking in his direction. He leaned closer and said with a grin, "Why didn't you notify our patrol unit about the search?"
"Look at how many people are in your homicide squad. How long will this search take? What if the killer gets away?"
"I've already given the order, and the patrol support will be here soon."
Wenner withdrew his gaze and simply gave a faint "hmm," displaying the demeanor of a master.
Kahor asked again, "Any distinguishing features? Height? Appearance? What clothes do you wear? What kind of car do you drive?"
Wenner remained silent, it was unclear whether he didn't want to answer or hadn't heard.
Kahor was a little embarrassed, touched his nose and chuckled awkwardly, "You did a good job this time. It seems the homicide squad is still capable..."
…………
The manhunt for Calvin Holt is proceeding smoothly.
More than an hour after the search began, they found a well-maintained dark blue Ford car in front of an old apartment building in the next block.
The car stood out like a crane among chickens.
The detectives identified the vehicle's owner by examining a sports bag found inside the car.
Wenner and Kahle arrived shortly afterward, and after a brief discussion, they split up to make their own plans.
The homicide squad and the patrol unit were both divided into two groups: one group kept watch outside, and the other group went into the building to search for suspects.
The two groups on guard duty outside were clearly separated, with one group responsible for half of the area.
Those who entered the apartment were equally aggressive, crowding together like sheep released from their pen, while secretly taking turns elbowing or kicking each other.
In short, the scene was chaotic.
Nevertheless, Calvin Holt was quickly brought down.
The homicide squad discovered the person, and then both groups rushed over together, each displaying their skills in the narrow corridor, almost coming to blows.
Fortunately, Calvin Holt escaped, which temporarily put the dispute on hold.
When they caught up to the rooftop, they briefly cooperated with Calvin Holt, a burly man with arms so strong they could run a horse across them, in his attempt to arrest them.
The collaboration broke down after Calvin Holt was pinned to the ground and handcuffed.
The patrol unit, with its superior numbers, blocked the homicide squad outside, while several detectives escorted Calvin Holt downstairs to claim credit.
When he saw that it was one of his men who brought the person out, Deputy Superintendent Kahor grinned so wide his mouth almost reached behind his ears.
Several members of the patrol team immediately gathered around, cheering and screaming, making strange noises and provoking the murder squad.
Although the others felt it was inappropriate, they could only remain silent since Deputy Superintendent Kahor hadn't stopped them. Those with good relationships with the homicide squad could only offer apologetic glances.
When Theodore and Bernie came out, they saw this bizarre scene, especially with the body bags being carried behind them by the forensic doctors, making the scene seem even more absurd.
Kahle said smugly to Wenner, "Without the cooperation of the patrol department, the murderer will probably escape today."
He glanced back at the body bag, stopped the man, opened it a crack, then immediately closed it again, pointing at the body bag.
"Look, if you had sought help from the patrol earlier, you might not be dead."
"The person was caught by the patrol department, so let's hand this case over to the patrol department as well."
Just as he was feeling smug, he suddenly heard a scream behind him. He turned around and saw Holt charging towards him like a gorilla.
The handcuffs were like paper in Holt's hands, easily broken by him. He grabbed Kahler and threw him to the ground, only to be subdued again by a swarm of police officers.
After the police dispersed, Holt, with a bruised and swollen face, was dragged up and spat a mouthful of bloody phlegm at Kahor.
