Chapter 52 Enrollment
As September approaches, the summer heat has not yet completely dissipated, but welcome banners have already been hung up on campus, with large red characters printed on them: "Warmly welcome the Class of 2025 freshmen!"
An Jing, whom the newcomers at the base called the "hidden demon king," finally packed her bags and officially embarked on her new life.
In the past few days, she has not gone to the observation deck again, nor has she responded to the trainees who surrounded her and asked her questions.
She quietly sorted through the small gifts she had received over the past few days. Apart from a few practical ones, she quietly put most of the candies and stickers back on the bench next to the training field.
She didn't sign her name, but everyone knew who she was at a glance.
She even dragged out the film doctor to make a solemn statement.
“Listen up,” she said to the doctor with a serious expression, frowning. “You can’t just show up anywhere, you know? My university life hasn’t even started yet. If you suddenly appear on campus and start someone, I might get called in for a talk.”
The doctor, dressed in a crisp white shirt and vest, with his surgical gloves on, was sitting on the edge of the bed, tidying up his instrument case. Hearing her question, he looked up at her, his voice professional and calm: "I should be different from other mysterious figures; I don't look scary, right?"
An Jing was momentarily speechless at the doctor's words.
That's not the point, bro!
Although the doctor in the film is indeed quite handsome.
"It has nothing to do with appearance! You're a mystery character, you can't just wander around in the real world. Especially since I live in a girls' dormitory, you can't just come out whenever you want, understand?"
The doctor paused for a few seconds: "I also live with you. Aren't you a girl? Why didn't you say it was wrong?"
The doctor wasn't just arguing for the sake of arguing.
He really doesn't understand.
An Jingzhen was speechless. After thinking for a long time, she finally said, "Because I'm too lazy to argue with you."
"Oh, that's okay."
Seeing that he had finally calmed down the argumentative person, An Jing breathed a sigh of relief.
An Jing clapped her hands in satisfaction, her tone relaxed: "That's right. You're an excellent employee. You should know that you should listen to the boss, but you can't ask why."
"So when will I get my salary?"
"..."
On the day she was supposed to go to school, An Jing didn't go immediately. Instead, she took a bus back to the old neighborhood where her parents lived.
She did not go inside.
I only sat on the bench at the entrance of the community for a while before appearing in front of my parents when they came home from get off work.
Wu Jing had just returned from the market, still carrying groceries in her hands.
She immediately spotted her daughter sitting there and froze.
“Jingjing…”
An Jing stood up, gently hugged her, and smiled, "I've come to see you all."
It's only been a short time since I last saw them, but they look much more haggard.
Her father stood silently to the side, looking at her for several seconds before asking in a low voice, "Aren't you going home to live?"
An Jing shook her head: "School starts, Dad."
Wu Jing's eyes were a little red: "It's enough that you could come and see us for a moment."
She didn't mention anything else, nor did she blame her for anything; she simply reached out and gently patted An Jing's shoulder.
Like when she fell down as a child, and someone would squat down and pat her knees.
Before leaving, she called out to An Jing, asking him to wait a moment, and then hurriedly ran upstairs.
Despite her bad legs, she was afraid of walking too slowly and An Jing would leave soon.
So when I ran down, my forehead was covered in sweat and my legs were trembling.
Wu Jing handed the ribs in the thermos to An Jing, her eyes reddening, and whispered, "I stewed these for you. Remember to heat them up when you get to your dorm."
"Okay." An Jing took it, quickly turned around, and didn't look back. She was afraid that if she looked back, she wouldn't be able to leave again.
I'm afraid I won't be able to resist cherishing this warmth and won't want to face reality.
But when she thought of the sweat on her mother's forehead and her trembling legs, An Jing couldn't help but cry softly.
He Lin was waiting for her outside the community gate. When she saw her carrying the thermos, she smiled but didn't say anything.
After An Jing calmed down in the car, he handed her the gift he had prepared for her. It was a custom-made back support backpack, which he said was a gift for An Jing's graduation.
“The Special Service Department might contact you from time to time; I’ve already informed the school about that. Don’t you have a specific connection to the mysterious magnetic field?” He Lin patiently instructed An Jing, “If you accidentally enter the mysterious magnetic field, be sure to contact us immediately via the locator, understand?”
An Jing nodded: "I know."
He Lin continued, "As for the card-drawing, I'll handle it for you next time if there's an opportunity. The researchers at the Special Service are studying how to bring the Mysteries out of the magnetic field under specific conditions. Currently, the places where the Mysteries appear outside the magnetic field are your cards."
"Okay, I will follow your instructions and will not put myself in danger."
They barely spoke on the way, but the atmosphere wasn't awkward. He Lin drove steadily, while An Jing sat in the passenger seat, looking out the window, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the edge of the GPS tracker.
When the car stopped at the school gate, He Lin turned her head and told her, "Tell me if you need anything. If I'm not here, you can tell someone else."
"Know it."
An Jing got off the bus carrying her suitcase.
The registration site for new students was bustling with activity, and volunteers in red vests weaved through the crowd, shouting until their throats were hoarse.
"New students, please line up here to register!"
"All new students are to move into the dormitories!"
"Keep a close eye on your important belongings to avoid losing them."
As soon as she entered the school gate, a friendly senior student greeted her: "Excuse me, let me help you with your luggage!"
An Jing subconsciously picked up the suitcase and said with a smile, "I won't get a card if I move it."
The senior student froze for a moment, her eyes like a cat that had been stepped on, and then vanished from the spot in the next second, not even her back was visible.
An Jing looked at the empty seat: "..."
She looked down at her suitcase and shook her head with amusement.
A boy walked by behind her and overheard the conversation. He was trying so hard not to laugh that his face turned red.
The Department of Mysterious Studies is located in a small building at the northernmost part of the entire college, far away from other departments.
Because it is a newly supported major, its treatment is quite special. The curriculum only overlaps with other majors in some ideological courses, and the rest are unique.
The dormitory building was also partitioned off, with four-person rooms.
Anjing's roommates are already halfway there. One of them is clearly a local. As soon as he entered the room, he started making loud phone calls, hanging up the bed curtains, and looking for a place to plug in his electric kettle to make milk tea. It was as lively as if he had moved his whole house there.
The other one was much quieter. She was a short-haired girl with a capable figure. She sat at the table silently organizing documents and nodded at An Jingdian.
"Hello, my name is Shao Ling."
An Jing.
The two exchanged a glance, then said nothing.
After settling his things, An Jing sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the freshman information booklet.
After the girl who made the call hung up, she smiled and came up to An Jing, introducing herself: "Hello, my name is Xu Xiaoyi."
An Jing.
