Chapter 40 Bloodbath 2
Chapter 40 Bloodbath 2 (Seeking monthly votes)
With the combined efforts of several lower-ranking members of the Gale Mercenary Group, the group retreated back into the vicinity of the trucks, where the trucks provided a barrier and successfully limited the wind wolf's wind blade attacks.
Seeing that it could not attack humans with its wind blades, the wind wolves wandering on the outskirts raised their necks and howled to the sky.
In an instant, as if receiving a command, all the wolves charged forward fearlessly, even those pierced by spears biting back and holding on tightly to the spear shaft.
"Damn it, do these guys not feel pain?"
Bucky cursed under his breath as he watched the wolf carcasses pile up higher and higher. With the wolf pack's suicidal attacks, the group had no choice but to retreat step by step.
At the front of the camp, there were about two hundred wolves gathered. Under the constant attacks of wild wolves and wind wolves, the truck blocking the front had been turned into a pile of scrap wood, and many mercenaries were seriously injured.
"Wells, this won't work. We'll be finished before dawn."
The leader of the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group shouted as he brandished his two-handed sword.
Wells surveyed the state of the camp. The entire camp looked like it had been ravaged by blood. The wolves seemed to have lost all sense of pain; even after being cut in two, their upper bodies were still moving and their mouths were still reaching out to bite.
"Ada! Batila! We have to fight our way out, we have to kill or drive away the Death Howl, otherwise, with it empowering the wolves, we'll be dragged down to our deaths."
Seeing the giant white wolf howling at the pack in the distance, he raised his hand and used a shield bash to repel the wolf that lunged at him. The two mercenary leaders, who were also fighting fiercely at the front, understood that Wells was right.
"You're right, Wells, but there are too many wolves now, we can't possibly break through!"
Wells, seeing that his side had lost thirty men, gritted his teeth and said to his subordinates beside him.
“Go tell Mr. Dida to send out a few carriages so we can rush over in them.”
After receiving orders from their leader, his men quickly left the battlefield and returned to the center of the camp to find the caravan manager. Soon after, the heavily pregnant Dida arrived at the front line under the protection of two guards.
"Commander Wells, your men say you need carriages. What are you planning to do?"
Seeing Dida approach, Wells raised an eyebrow and waved to the mercenaries who were waiting nearby, signaling them to come and take over.
"No, you've misunderstood, Mr. Dida. It's like this: the current situation is far too passive for us. Do you see that white giant wolf? It's a mid-level magical beast. With it around, it's unlikely that our plan to retreat after depleting a certain number of its members will actually happen."
Dida glanced at the giant white wolf not far away, then at the blood and gore on the defensive line. The pungent smell of blood made him feel nauseous, and his face paled as he continued to ask...
“I understand, Captain Wells. Death Howl is a mid-tier wolf-type magical beast with extremely powerful attack capabilities. However, however, this shipment costs three thousand gold coins. I cannot afford to lose this shipment; I cannot afford to pay for it.”
Wells paused for a moment, not quite understanding what the caravan manager meant, then seemed to realize something after a few seconds.
“Mr. Dida, we will not abandon the caravan and break out. We plan to have the three captains and about ten men launch an attack on Death Howl. Only by killing or driving away that mid-level magical beast can we be safe. Otherwise, if we continue to drag this out, even if we are not completely wiped out, we will suffer heavy casualties.”
Seeing that Dida was still hesitant, the leader of the Blood Wolf Mercenary Group, who was blocking the way, suddenly became furious. He swung his sword energy several times towards the wolf pack, then turned around and walked towards the two of them.
Covered in blood, Aka, wielding a two-handed sword like a warrior from hell, grabbed Dida by the collar and lifted him up. "Prepare the carriage, do as we say. You damned son of a bitch, if we were going to run, we would have run already. If you keep whining, I'll kill you."
Wells quickly stepped forward to separate the two, forcefully pushing Aka aside. Whether he was stunned or something else, the caravan leader's legs went weak, and he sat down on the ground with a thud.
“Mr. Dida, please forgive me, Commander Aka meant no harm.”
As a mercenary group that had cooperated several times, Wells did not want to create a rift between the caravan and the mercenary group in this situation.
After sitting on the ground for a while to catch his breath, Dida stood up with the help of his guards. He took a deep look at the Blood Wolf captain, who had returned to the front to block the attack, then turned to Wells, took his hand, and said humbly...
"I understand, Commander Wells. This cargo is just too important; all my wealth is in it. I'll prepare a carriage for you right away. Please be careful."
After saying that, he left the front line under the protection of his guards. Wells stood there watching the caravan manager's departing figure, sighed helplessly, and turned back to the defensive line to discuss the details of the raid with the two captains.
The other side
As everyone retreated back into the defensive fortifications formed by the carriages, the defensive pressure on the Gale Mercenary Group was significantly reduced. Having finally caught his breath, Haven turned to look for Paimon, only to find him standing there, seemingly lost in thought, as if he had lost his soul.
He glanced at the defensive line, which was holding up fairly well, then quickly walked up to Paimon and patted the young man's cheek.
"Hey! Paimon, what's wrong? Are we fighting? Don't get distracted."
Paimon slowly raised his head upon hearing the voice, his eyes bloodshot and red, his expression a complex mix of fear, apprehension, and anger. His voice trembled with a hint of tears as he spoke to Havent.
"Will, Will, Ah-Dai is dead, Ah-Dai is dead! He was just saying he was going to the capital to buy Lily a present!"
Haven looked at Paimon, who was rambling incoherently, and patted the latter on the shoulder in a gesture of comfort. Just as Haven was about to say something, he heard a scream from behind him.
Haven quickly turned around and saw three wind wolves leap onto the roof of the carriage and launch an attack on the defending mercenaries.
"Gan"
Without bothering to appease Paimon, Haven grabbed the longsword stuck in the ground and charged forward.
After the three-headed wind wolf spat out three wind blades at the defending crowd, it leaped down and charged into the crowd, attacking indiscriminately. Bucky, who was originally at the front, quickly turned around and charged towards the wind wolf.
"Oklo, hold on, I'll take care of these three beasts soon."
Having said that, he swung his two-handed axe and slashed at the wind wolf's lower back. The wind wolf, which was biting the mercenary, seemed to sense the danger and quickly let go and dodged to the side.
Bucky's powerful strike only managed to leave a long gash on the side of the Wind Wolf. The Wind Wolf cried out in pain and turned to look at the person who attacked it.
Bucky swallowed hard as he looked at the wind wolf baring its teeth at him. Then, remembering the tall man's instructions, he gritted his teeth, roared, and raised his two-handed axe to chop at the wind wolf once more.
