Chapter 89 The Morning After the Rain
Chapter 89 The Morning After the Rain
After speaking with the innkeeper, Haven and his companion went upstairs, opened the door, and found that Serena was indeed still sleeping. They didn't know if she was carefree or just a good sleeper, but Haven could only attribute it to the composure of a strong person. After all, if he were as arrogant as Serena, he wouldn't have taken this matter to heart either.
Why don't you go back to your own room?
Looking at Lori who followed him in, Haven asked, puzzled:
"Um, um, I feel safer if we sleep together."
"Go away, go away, go away! How old are you? Still sleeping together! Go back to your own rooms. Your sleeping habits are absolutely terrible. I'm not sleeping with you."
He then pushed Lori out of the room, closed the door for Serena, and went to his own room.
On the other side, the Heilgen administration building.
Anda led a dozen security guards back into the courtyard. What came into view were the walls blackened by the flames, the doors of several buildings wide open, and the papers on the ground, wet with rain, limp and droopy. A group of people stood at the gate, at a loss, not knowing what to do.
"Look, what's that? The goddess of dawn is above."
The crowd looked in the direction the security guard was pointing, and saw a round object swaying back and forth where the flag had been. By the remaining firelight, they finally saw what it was.
"Hiss~~~~ Lord Oliver, my God."
"Hiss~~~ These bandits killed Lord Oliver."
"It's over, it's over, we're all finished. We're all doomed now, the imperial inspectors will come and execute us all."
As Anda listened to his subordinates' incoherent arguing, his heart sank. Too much had happened today. In the afternoon, he was talking to the casino owner, and in the evening, he received news that his wife's brother had been killed. Then he got into a fight with masked men in black who were suspected to be rebels, and now, Baron Oliver's head was hanging on the railing in front of the administration building.
After a moment of stunned silence, he opened his slightly bitter lips and said in a low voice:
"Go and take Lord Oliver's head off. The rest of you and I will begin patrolling the town. At least before the garrison arrives, we need to know where the town has been damaged."
Having received the order, the group gradually calmed down and began to assign tasks to themselves.
Da da da~ Da da da~
While still asleep, Haven vaguely heard the sound of galloping hooves. As time passed, the sound grew louder and louder. Unable to sleep any longer, Haven got up, opened the window, and looked out. A large number of cavalrymen in dark gray armor were approaching down the street.
Just then, Haven suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder, and instinctively jumped back and turned to look.
"Serena? How did you get in?"
Seeing the girl in a white linen dress floating in mid-air, Haven thought he was seeing a ghost from another world.
The girl rubbed her eyes and looked at Haven.
"Will, it's dawn, it's so noisy outside, and I'm hungry."
"Oh, you're hungry so soon? Didn't you need to go to the bathroom yesterday after eating so much?"
The silver-haired girl tilted her head and thought about Haven's words, then scratched her hair, mimicking the gesture Haven often made.
"No need, Serena can convert everything she eats into magic."
"Wow, impressive. The law of conservation of energy really doesn't hold true in the magical world. Um, although you don't need to go to the toilet, I still do. Why don't you go back to your room and wait for me? Yesterday I asked the shop owner to buy some clothes for the three of us. Pick one you like to wear."
Following Haven's instructions, Serena obediently nodded, then floated towards the wall in front of Haven, passing through it the instant she touched it.
Haven, standing to the side in his underwear, stared blankly at the scene.
"Wow, I can do that now too. Tsk tsk tsk, this is perfect for showing off."
About ten minutes later, Haven, who had finished tidying up, knocked on Serena's door. Serena floated out again after hearing the noise. It has to be said that good-looking people look good in anything. A simple light blue floral dress gave the young girl a unique temperament.
Just as Haven was about to offer some praise, Lori's room door opened, and the little rascal walked out with obvious dark circles under his eyes, looking like he hadn't slept well all night.
"Good morning, Mr. Will; good morning, Miss Serena."
Seeing Lori yawning incessantly, Haven asked in confusion:
"Did you not sleep all night?"
Lori covered her mouth and answered again, her eyes brimming with tears:
Ha~~~~~~~~
I was so afraid those people would suddenly attack, so I didn't dare sleep all night. I only dared to sleep when it was dawn, but I was woken up by a commotion shortly afterward. What happened outside now?
Hearing Lori's words, Haven gave him a sharp rap on the head.
"Why worry so much? Your sister Serena is here. If those people dare to come, we'll take care of them in no time. It must be the garrison from nearby. I saw the insignia on their armor."
Lori got another smack on the head, but she was used to it. She rubbed her head and acted as if nothing had happened. "Ha~~~"
"So what are we going to do now, Mr. Will?"
"Let's eat, then go to town and see where we can buy a horse-drawn carriage. We didn't have time to buy one yesterday."
After going downstairs, I found the lobby packed with people, all craning their necks to look outside. I found a seat and started calling out:
"Boss, I'd like to order."
Upon hearing the sound, the boss, who had been standing at the door observing the situation outside, quickly came over. Seeing that it was Havente and his group, he immediately gave them a warm smile.
"Oh, it's you, Venerable Master! How did you sleep last night? Is there anything I can help you with?"
"I'd like something to eat. I'm a little hungry, Serena. What would you like to eat?"
Just as Serena picked up the menu, ready to excitedly order everything, the innkeeper pressed his hand down on hers, giving Haven an awkward smile and saying:
"Master, Master, well, the garrison has arrived and placed the town under martial law. We're not allowed to leave the town now, so some ingredients can't be delivered, and we might not be able to cook some dishes for you."
After listening to the boss's words, Haiwen nodded and returned the menu to the boss.
"Okay, then just give me whatever you have, and make sure there's a generous portion."
"Yes, yes, don't worry, I'll arrange it right away and bring it up to you as soon as possible."
Just as the innkeeper bowed and was about to head to the kitchen, Haven seemed to remember something and reached out to stop him.
"Um, where in town can I buy a carriage or horses?"
The innkeeper turned around, thought carefully for a moment, and replied:
"There's usually a horse dealer on East Street, which is the second street east of our hotel. He usually sells horses there, but I don't know if he's still there. Why don't you go and check after the martial law is lifted?"
"Okay, boss, I understand. You can go ahead and get busy."
Heilgen Administration Building
After working through most of the night, Captain Anda finally led his men to figure out which parts of the town had been attacked. First, the government building was looted, then the security team was completely overrun, and after a third of the security team members died, they chose to surrender.
The armory and military supply depot were also looted. Finally, the Goya Baths, where Baron Oliver's body was found, not only had everything taken away, but the baths' guards were also mostly dead. Apart from these few places, the houses in the scattered neighborhoods were burned to ashes, which seemed insignificant in comparison.
Led by Anda, the remaining security team members stood quietly in the courtyard, with Baron Oliver's body pieced together in front of them.
As the sound of hooves grew closer, the remaining security team members, including Captain Anda, held their breath, awaiting their fate.
"Xu~~~~~"
A middle-aged man with brown hair, dressed in full armor, dismounted and walked towards the security team. The clanking of his armor was like a death knell. In the oppressive atmosphere, as the security team members could barely breathe, the brown-haired man lifted the white sheet, glanced at Baron Oliver's corpse, and asked:
"Even in death, they committed such heinous acts. Are there any captains or anything like that still alive? Can anyone explain to me what happened?"
Captain Anda quickly stepped forward and saluted the brown-haired man.
"Greetings, sir. I am Anda Luo. Formerly the captain of the 6th Company of the 9th Light Swordsmen Regiment, I retired and was appointed captain of the Helgen Security Team."
The middle-aged man with brown hair stood up, looked Anda over, and his expression softened when he saw the many wounds on the latter's body.
"Anda Lo? Ah~ I remember now, I know you, you are a brave soldier."
"I am Count Casilla of Moor City, soldier. Now tell me what has happened here."
Seeing that the other party did not arrest him on charges of dereliction of duty, Anda breathed a sigh of relief and began to explain what had happened the night before.
After a long pause, Count Casilla stroked his beard and asked, puzzled:
"So your conclusion is that this group of people came here just to kill Oliver? They went through all that trouble and took all that risk just to kill that idiot."
Anda automatically skipped over some of the words in Count Casilla's speech and continued in his reply:
"Based on the current results, yes, I've spoken with the female clerk who didn't manage to escape, as well as the surviving guests at the Goya Baths. This group had a very clear objective: to come directly to Lord Oliver."
Listening to Anda's words, Count Casillas fell into thought, his gloved fingers lightly tapping the hilt of his sword, producing a series of crisp sounds.
"Is there a loss report?"
Anda quickly handed over the report he had prepared beforehand, which Count Casilla glanced at a few times before putting it into his pouch.
“Captain Anda, I understand the situation. Thank you for your cooperation. I will report to His Majesty and lift the martial law. I will continue to track down that person. Please keep patrols these next few days and await the arrival of the new baron.”
