Conan: I'm a zaibatsu in Tokyo
Chapter 428 Who is the Undercover Agent?
When Vodka pushed open the door, he was carrying steaming rice balls and several bottles of mineral water.
"Brother, I've bought it." Vodka walked up to Gin and respectfully handed him the food.
Bourbon, who was handcuffed, asked uncomfortably, "Could you untie us so we can eat?"
Gin didn't even glance at Bourbon. He took the bag, pulled out a rice ball and a bottle of water, and casually tossed them to Vodka: "Feed them."
Vodka paused for a moment, then realized what he meant and nodded, "Yes, brother."
He walked up to the three of them, opened the packaging of a rice ball, and held it to Bourbon's mouth, gesturing for him to eat quickly.
Bourbon tugged at the metal handcuffs on his wrists and said with dissatisfaction, "Hey, Gin, we're all decent people. Can't you just let us eat ourselves? What kind of talk is this? You don't feed dogs like this!"
Gin, sitting on a wooden crate not far away, sneered upon hearing this: "What? Don't want to eat? Then go hungry."
Vodka crouched down and said, "Bourbon, open your mouth."
Bourbon looked at the rice ball so close to him, then at Gin's uncompromising gaze, and finally opened his mouth.
Vodka picked up the water bottle again, unscrewed the cap, and held it to Bourbon's lips.
Bourbon took a few sips from his hand.
Next up are Kir and Shuichi Akai.
They knew Gin wasn't someone to be trifled with, so they didn't ask for much.
"How long are we going to be locked up?"
Gin didn't answer, he just exhaled a smoke ring.
He cursed Zheng Yi in his heart.
That bastard is definitely trying to do something while Curaçao is suffering from amnesia.
Rum likely mentally controlled Curaçao back then, and now he wants to regain control of her.
“Speak up,” Kiel asked. “You can’t keep us locked up here forever, can you?”
Shuichi Akai said, "Mr. Gin, we all live in Tokyo. We can't just run away. Instead of wasting time here, let us go back first and wait for definite news from Jundo before making any further plans."
"Shut up," Gin said coldly.
……
Zheng Yi squatted down in front of Curaçao, his knees against his chest, toying with a convenience store loyalty card that he had somehow managed to smuggle from the bag of some unlucky passerby.
Of course, after his "modification", a crooked "Outstanding Employee" label has been pasted on it.
The smile on his face made Ai feel uneasy.
Curaçao's signature heterochromatic eyes looked somewhat empty at this moment. She stared blankly at Zheng Yi, her long silver hair falling messily over her shoulders.
"Listen up, Curaçao." Zheng Yi cleared his throat, deliberately lowering his voice to try and make it sound more serious.
Curaçao blinked, her long eyelashes fluttering: "I am... Curaçao?"
“That’s right, Curaçao, you are my most loyal employee, the pillar of the company, my right-hand woman.” Zheng Yi pointed at her and said confidently:
"You love your job and see overtime as the meaning of life. You wish you could work for 48 hours a day and make the most of every minute. Your motto is: 'Work as hard as you can, as long as you don't die.'"
Curaçao nodded as if she understood, her eyes still filled with confusion. Her instincts told her that a man seemed to hold the power of life and death over her.
She looked at Zheng Yi.
"You're the best corporate slave in all of Japan." Shoichi patted her on the shoulder.
“Social…livestock?” Curaçao repeated the unfamiliar word with difficulty.
"It means an outstanding employee," Zheng said without changing his expression.
“Oh.” Curaçao nodded again.
Ai, who was standing to the side, had her arms crossed and was leaning against the sofa.
As she watched this scene, she was still moved by Zheng Yi's words that "forgetting the darkness is a good thing."
At that moment, she truly believed that Zheng Yi had grown up and that he actually had a gentle side.
But soon, reality gave her a resounding slap in the face.
Zheng Yi showed her through his actions that she was thinking too soon.
She couldn't help but step forward, gritting her teeth as she said, "Zhengyi! What nonsense are you spouting? Don't you have any conscience about deceiving someone with amnesia like this?"
"Conscience?" Zheng Yi turned his head, poked her forehead with his finger, and asked, "What is conscience? Can you eat it?"
He leaned closer to Ai: "I don't know why you have this misconception that I have a conscience."
Besides, Curaçao used to be so boring. Now she's like a blank sheet of paper. Since she's a blank sheet, of course I'm going to draw something interesting on her."
"This isn't funny, this is called mental pollution." Ai rolled her eyes.
Just then, Curaçao stood up from the sofa.
She looked at Zheng Yi and asked seriously, "So, what is my job?"
"a lot of."
Zheng Yi's smile deepened.
He snapped his fingers and, as if by magic, pulled out a neatly folded A4 sheet of paper from behind him.
"This is a customized 'Employee Daily Performance Maximization Execution Table' just for you."
Curaçao took the paper with both hands, her expression solemn. When she saw what it contained, her heterochromatic eyes widened slightly, her pupils trembling.
This is an outrageously detailed schedule, written in a wildly flamboyant handwriting, clearly composed in an extremely short time. Its content is so absurd it seems to challenge the limits of human physiology.
04:00 - 04:30: Get up.
Alarm clocks are prohibited; individuals must wake up naturally using their biological clock to demonstrate their eagerness to work.
04:30 - 05:00: Morning washing up.
Requirement: Recite the "Employee Handbook" while brushing your teeth.
……
23:00 - 04:00 the next day: Rest and free overtime.
It is recommended to use this time to reflect on the shortcomings of the day's work and to preview the work to be done tomorrow.
Note: The boss reserves the right to interpret this form.
If you have any objections, just bear with them.
“This…” Curaçao looked at the paper, her brows furrowing slightly, and a trace of “confusion” finally appeared in her previously empty eyes.
She has amnesia, not that she has become mentally challenged.
The table above is something no human could create; it represents the work schedule of a robot.
"This is the workload you used to have," Zheng Yi said with his hands behind his back and a serious expression. "I hope you can get back into shape as soon as possible."
Curaçao looked at Shoichi and slowly put down the A4 paper in her hand.
She sensed that the man in front of her wasn't a good person. Curaçao turned her head, her gaze passing over Seiichi, and looking at Ai and Momiji standing to the side.
Compared to the man in front of her, the two girls who picked her up had clearer eyes and gentler breaths, and seemed more trustworthy.
Especially that girl with brown hair, although she always had a stern face, she didn't have that exploitative feeling about her.
Ai strode forward, shoved aside Seiichi who was blocking her way, and stood in front of Curaçao.
"Shoichi, that's enough." Ai stared at him coldly: "Just hand Curaçao over to me, and stop causing trouble."
Zheng Yi was pushed back two steps, but he wasn't angry. Instead, he shrugged and spread his hands innocently.
"Oh dear, Ai, how can you be so clueless about humor? I'm helping her with cognitive restructuring. Look how expressive her face is right now!"
"We don't need this kind of vividness," Ai said mercilessly.
Curaçao nodded, agreeing with Ai's words even more.
She looked at Ai and asked, "Then who am I?"
Ai said, "You're Zheng Yi's bodyguard. You're not very proactive at work, you often take leave, and you're a bodyguard who doesn't pay attention to Zheng Yi."
Zheng Yi pinched Ai's head and said with dissatisfaction, "You still say I'm mentally corrupting Curaçao? Isn't this mental corruption? You've corrupted Curaçao, how will she work in the future?"
"Mind your own business," Ai said. "Just leave Curaçao to me; it's better than you polluting it."
……
The dimly lit room reeked of mildew, and the only window was boarded up, letting in only a few dim rays of light.
Bourbon, Shuichi Akai, and Kir were arranged in a triangle, with metal handcuffs on their wrists locked to a radiator pipe in the corner.
Vodka moved a chair and sat outside the door, occasionally hearing the sound of a lighter being turned on and off.
"Hey," Bourbon broke the silence first.
He leaned against the wall: "Why not be honest and admit who the undercover agents are? It'll save me from suffering here with you. Anyway, that list of undercover agents is already in someone's head; it's only a matter of time before they're exposed."
Shuichi Akai's expression remained calm and even: "Mr. Bourbon's words make it sound like you're convinced there's a mole among us. I don't even know what this organization does yet, how could I be a suspected mole?"
Bourbon scoffed; for some reason, he disliked this person intensely.
He said coldly, "Kier and I are veterans of the organization; you, the newcomer, are the most suspicious."
Shuichi Akai said, "Although I don't know which force wants to infiltrate the organization, no one would send a defenseless technician, would they?"
“Who knows?” Bourbon shook his head, then looked at Kiel.
Kiel calmly stated, "I have already proven my loyalty to the organization."
Gin does trust her more than Bourbon and Subaru Okiya.
Otherwise, when she was handcuffed and making those little moves, Gin's gun wouldn't have been pointed at her arm, but at her head.
"To whom has Gin proven himself?" Bourbon sneered. "If Gin could tell right from wrong, we wouldn't be here."
The three looked at each other.
"Heh~"
Kiel looked at Bourbon and said, "Of the three of us, you're the most uneasy one. Could it be that you're the undercover agent?"
“I’m uneasy? I just don’t want to waste time on this kind of boring stuff,” Bourbon said.
“No, your unease isn’t just because you’re imprisoned.” Shuichi Akai adjusted his posture slightly to make his wrists, which were red from the handcuffs, a little more comfortable.
Kiel looked at him and nodded, signaling him to continue.
Shuichi Akai said, "When Vodka was delivering the food just now, you were the one who observed the most carefully among the three of us. You were looking at the position of Vodka's holster and at the blind spot where Gin was standing outside the door."
He looked at Bourbon and said, "If you didn't want to escape, you wouldn't have looked so closely, would you?"
“You’re very observant,” Bourbon said with a smile. “You’re just an ordinary technician, without any training or experience in these things, yet you can observe me so calmly. That’s quite remarkable.”
I bet you were calculating what your chances were of grabbing Vodka's pistol if you suddenly attacked, and then escaping, right?
Kiel listened to their conversation and nodded.
There might be some issues with the identities of these two people.
She began by asking, "So, where did you come from? The Japanese Public Security Bureau? The FBI? Or some other country?"
“I’m not an undercover agent,” Bourbon said.
Shuichi Akai shook his head and said, "I'm just an ordinary technician."
Silence fell in the room again, broken only by the occasional rattling of the chains between the handcuffs.
After they finished arguing, Vodka slowly stopped them.
"Quiet down!" Vodka's voice came from outside the door. "If you keep making noise, I'll gag you!"
The three of them kept their mouths shut and turned their heads away.
Bourbon stared at the crack in the wall, his eyes unreadable. Kir bit his lip, lost in thought. Shuichi Akai lowered his eyes, his fingers unconsciously tracing the edge of his handcuffs.
Time ticked by, and the atmosphere in the room grew increasingly oppressive.
Everyone was calculating their own situation, yet none dared to make a rash move.
But staying here would seem to leave him like a fish on a chopping board, his life or death hanging in the balance, at Gin's whim.
"Hey." Bourbon suddenly spoke again, his voice so low it was almost inaudible: "If... I mean if, there really is a mole among us, who do you think it would be?"
“I don’t know,” Kiel replied immediately, “but it certainly wasn’t me.”
“Neither am I,” Shuichi Akai said. “However, if there really is an undercover agent, he must be very well hidden.”
Bourbon pursed his lips and then each of them uttered a pointless remark.
Outside the door, Vodka sat back down in his chair, lit a cigarette, and listened intently to their conversation.
"When do you think we can get out?" Shuichi Akai asked.
He was even thinking about how he would "teach" himself a lesson for skipping work for so long without telling anyone.
“Who knows?” Bourbon said softly. “We have to wait for Cointreau to help the person with amnesia regain their memory.”
Kiel shook his head.
In her mind, Jundu's image was gradually merging with that of someone else, and they might be locked up for a long time.
Shuichi Akai, looking completely clueless, asked the two, "I don't think Gin and Cointreau have a good relationship. Is there some kind of factional struggle between them?"
"Tell me, which side should I be on? I just want to live."
Neither Bourbon nor Kiel answered him.
They didn't know either.
All I know is that Cointreau and Gin don't get along, but I've never heard of any factional struggles or anything like that.
But seeing Tequila openly siding with Zheng Yi this time made both of them think twice.
Could it be that Jundu knows he/she is an undercover agent, which is why he/she isn't trying to win him/her over during the internal power struggle? (End of Chapter)
