Chapter 269 On How Waste Becomes Human

Chapter 269 On How Waste Becomes Human

How long did I sleep?

Matsueda Jun looked at the woman's full lips as they opened and closed. He seemed to have said the same thing when he woke up on the lawn yesterday.

The boy was momentarily at a loss for how to react, but fortunately, Mochizuki Haruka had already pushed him aside and thrown him into the woman's arms.

The woman who had sat up lay back down after being jolted back down by her niece. Wang Yuehua looked down at the girl who was lying on her chest, her shoulders trembling, and then looked up at the boy standing by the hospital bed.

The drowsy look on the woman's face slowly faded. She shook her head, gently patted the girl's back, and felt the torrent of tears soaking her chest.

"Looks like I slept for a long time."

Jun Matsue looked out the window at the not-too-intense sunlight. "To be precise, it's exactly one hundred and eighty days."

From November 4th to May 4th, exactly six months.

"Six months? Did I sleep for that long?!" The woman's eyes widened in surprise. "I made so many promises with Xiaoyao, haven't I broken them all now?!"

"It's alright, it's good that you're awake." Mochizuki Haruka raised her head, the girl's tears still flowing, but the corners of her mouth turned up without any bitterness. "Actually, I didn't sleep for very long."

It just so happens that she slept from winter into spring.

To give his aunt and niece some space in the ward, Jun Matsuoka chose to stand in the corridor and stare blankly. He looked at the beech tree downstairs, which was in bloom in April and May. The tips of its branches and leaves had some small light green flowers, which looked like a green lace trim when viewed from a distance.

Not long after he finished writing his plant observation report, Mochizuki Haruka opened the door to the ward. The girl's tears had been wiped away, and there was no trace of her crying.

"Help me lift my aunt into the wheelchair." Her voice was muffled, indicating that she hadn't fully recovered from her emotions.

"Isn't she awake?" Jun Matsue glanced into the ward. The woman was curled up in the blankets, her fingers frantically swiping across her phone screen, seemingly browsing information from the past six months.

"I'm awake, but after six months of inactivity, my body feels a bit unresponsive."

Wang Yuehua sat up in bed. She had taken off her hospital gown and was wearing a black nightgown, which was thicker than the one her niece wore.

"Look." The woman raised her right hand and held it in the air. Her smooth arm trembled slightly, revealing a sickly pale complexion that seemed to have been hidden from the light.

Jun Matsue went into the room and observed for a while. "Isn't everything fine here?"

"But I want to move my left hand."

When the two people's expressions changed, Aunt blinked and smiled happily.

"Just kidding!"

However, Mochizuki Haruka's expression remained serious. The girl sat on the edge of the bed, holding her phone, preparing to contact the medical team for an examination.

"I was just playing a prank, did it really have to be this complicated?"

“No.” Mochizuki Haruka immediately rejected the idea. “You’ve only just woken up; you need to have a full medical check-up.”

The woman on the hospital bed sighed, "It's a pity I was groggy when I first woke up, otherwise I really wanted to pretend to have amnesia and see how you would react."

Matsueda Jun shook his head. "Mochizuki's heart may not be able to withstand this kind of blow. Aunt, please let her go."

The girl put down her phone, took the woman's hand, and said, "The medical team will be here in five minutes. Auntie, please stay in bed and don't go anywhere."

"But I want to wash up!" Wang Yuehua shook her niece's hand, as if their roles had been reversed. "Look, I just got up, my face is dirty, and my mouth feels weird."

"Then I'll push you there, but it's better to try not to move around too much." Mochizuki Haruka turned around and looked at the boy sitting on the other bed yawning.

"Matsueda, please help Auntie into the wheelchair." Matsueda Jun stood up. "Is that alright? I'll do it then."

The woman on the bed gently lifted the blanket, revealing her slender legs. She sat by the window and obediently opened her arms to him.

Jun Matsue placed his hands on her back and under her legs, lifted his aunt up in his arms, and gently placed her on the wheelchair.

Wang Yuehua twisted her body in the wheelchair, looking quite intrigued. "This is the first time I've ever been carried in a princess carry!"

The woman looked at Mochizuki Haruka, whose expression remained unchanged as she focused on pushing the wheelchair toward the bathroom—she had been carried like this by Matsue countless times when she injured her foot.

The aunt's eyes darted around; it seemed her niece had experienced quite a bit while she was fast asleep.
When the two returned to the ward, the room was already filled with a group of women dressed as nurses, and Jun Matsueda had already slipped out.

After Mochizuki Haruka appeared, the leading women quickly surrounded her. The girl gave instructions in an orderly manner and finally pushed her aunt in a wheelchair to the bedside.

"We'll check here later. They'll bring the equipment over. I'll be right outside the door. Auntie, just call me if you need anything."

Wang Yuehua looked somewhat surprised, staring at the girl in front of her for a while. "So, Xiaoyao already has such a dignified side."

The girl was stunned for a moment, then smiled faintly, a smile much warmer than the sunlight outside the window.

"After all, I'm the one taking care of you now."

Mochizuki Haruka squeezed the woman's hand again. "After the medical check-up, we'll go home."

"Hmm." Wang Yuehua smiled as well, watching the girl walk towards the door. She thought to herself, "Xiao Yao has indeed matured a lot."

Mochizuki Haruka closed the door and stood outside the ward window, making sure the woman inside could see her at any time. Matsueda Jun, with his back to the girl, continued to observe the zelkova tree downstairs.

The girl watched his retreating figure, recalling her aunt's sighs in the room. Looking back over the past six months, she realized that her aunt had become someone she didn't even recognize.

"It's all your fault." She lifted her little leather shoe and gently kicked the boy's shin.

"What did I do again?" Jun Matsue turned to look at the girl.

On the other side of the glass behind her, the woman, with the help of a nurse, took off her pajamas. The moment a large expanse of skin was revealed, the curtains in the room were drawn.

“It’s all your fault.” Mochizuki Haruka didn’t explain why. “You made me cry so many times, made me kneel in front of you, made me get caught in the rain, and made me catch a fever and a cold.”

"It made me learn to be strong, to lick my wounds alone, and to be tormented by hope, gradually trying to accept it."

"It made me live alone, it made me learn to cook, and it made me travel the world."

"It's all your fault that I went from being a piece of trash to a human."

Matsueda Jun looked helpless. "Then can I apologize to you?"

He turned to look out the window again, and the girl walked to his side, and together they gazed at the hazy flower buds on the slender branches.

"An apology isn't enough. Since you've caused me to end up like this, you should at least make amends for the rest of your life."

"It's a dream."

Despite being rejected by Jun Matsueda, Haruka Mochizuki still smiled gently.

Perhaps this smile is proof that the girl has become a better human being.
