Chapter 467 Straightforward
Yamami Maki's outer shell shattered even faster than Matsueda Jun had anticipated.
When the school bell rang the next day, Jun Matsueda remained seated. The girl who always tried to talk to him beside him was unusually absent from the classroom today.
The boy thought to himself, "They are indeed more informed than I am."
The second-year students were very efficient at leaving school, and the crowded corridors quickly became empty again. The shouts and whistles of the sports clubs on the playground could be faintly heard from outside the window, making the classroom exceptionally quiet.
After finishing today's assigned homework, Jun Matsueda pulled out a workbook from his drawer. It was "Ochanomizu Past Questions," which he had bought with Maki Yami at the bookstore. He had promised to be a tutor for his senior, so of course he had to do it himself.
Since he'd already bought it, he figured he might as well finish it; he didn't want to waste it.
The bell rang four more times in the school building, marking the end of the two self-study periods for the third-year students. Jun Matsueda put down his pen, picked up his schoolbag, and entered the corridor a step later than him, amidst the commotion of his seniors.
The boy walked towards Class 4, Grade 3, and stopped a short distance from the door. The first group of students had just walked out of the classroom and were heading towards the other stairwell with their backs to him. The students, who were in a hurry to go home, did not notice him.
Jun Matsue waited for a while, and then a girl came out of the classroom. Although she wasn't the person he was looking for, the girl noticed him.
"Matsueda-kun?" The girl's expression was a mixture of shyness and confusion—shy because she had spoken to Matsueda Jun at last year's cultural festival, and confused because second-year students should have left the school building long ago.
"What's the matter with you?"
The boy smiled and said, "I'm looking for Senior Yamami."
"Yamami," the girl turned around and looked into the classroom, "Do you need me to call her for you?"
"Thank you, senior." Jun Matsue smiled sincerely—it was this senior who had helped him find Yamami-senpai in the first place.
So the girl went back to the classroom, and after a while, Yamami Maki walked out of the classroom door with her head down.
She looked up at Matsueda Jun for a few seconds, seemingly describing something.
"Matsueda-san, do you need something from me?"
The boy nodded. "Are you free now, senior?"
The girl hesitated for a moment, then took out her phone and sent a message, "Please wait for me for a moment, Pine Branch."
A few minutes later, Yamami Maki reappeared in front of Matsueda Jun, carrying her schoolbag.
Her tone was like that of a stray pet dog: "Let's go."
The two turned and left the third-year students' territory, stepping onto the deserted stairs, with the girl silently following behind Matsueda Jun.
"There's no one in the news department right now, is it alright to chat there?"
The boy didn't turn around when he spoke, so he couldn't see Yamami Maki nod. However, since the senior didn't say anything, it meant she agreed.
The two entered the second floor, and this time there was no one in the corridor. Only the footsteps of the third-year students could be heard at the corner of the stairs at the end, like the sound effects of some kind of ghost movie.
After walking through the corridor and down the stairs, Yamami Maki opened the door to the newsroom and took two steps inside before stopping, with only her schoolbag swaying slightly in her hand.
Jun Matsue closed the door and turned on the light in the room—the newsroom contained cameras and other equipment, and the curtains were always drawn when no one was there.
He walked over to the girl and asked, "Senior, won't you sit down?"
Yamami Maki obediently found a seat and placed her schoolbag on the table. Matsueda Jun sat next to her, scrutinizing the girl's profile—she didn't look much different from when she was in summer vacation, except that her skin had a slightly cold, pale color.
However, the gentle spring breeze that had once stirred Jun Matsue's heart had become so faint that it could only linger in the depths of the girl's pupils.
"How did it come to this?" he sighed.
Yamami Maki forced a smile instead, "I wasn't like this before I met Matsueda-san just now—Mitani-san even said today that I've become more and more elegant lately."
“You used to say I wouldn’t lie, but lately, apart from my family, everyone seems to trust me quite a bit. Isn’t that a kind of growth?” As the girl spoke these words with a bittersweet tone, Junmai Matsueda watched her lips move, which were once moist but now dry, revealing her absent-mindedness about life.
Yamami Maki was once a girl who couldn't lie and believed that bowing could really solve problems, but now she has been turned into someone who uses a nonchalant smile to cover up her inner desolation by his "revenge".
In that instant, a sense of guilt swept through Jun Matsuoka's heart, which he clutched tightly in his hand and hid in his sleeve.
"Did you not perform well in this mock exam, senior?"
She must have finally exhausted herself. Yami Maki lay on the table, covering the lower half of her face with her crossed arms, and smiled at him wearily and weakly.
"They really didn't perform well; they even had trouble with the tea ceremony, let alone Waseda and Keio."
"There's no need to force yourself to smile," the boy said gently.
However, the girl's tone was even gentler.
"It's not that I'm forcing myself, it's just that I can't help but smile when I see you."
Even if her feelings for him were ordinary, she genuinely liked him.
"Why is that?" Jun Matsue continued to ask.
"You knew perfectly well." Yami Maki's words were tinged with resentment and a hint of tears.
"Because you're going to be with someone else."
So the boy who was sitting also leaned his upper body on the table, and turned his face to look at the girl.
They were like two kindergarten students who secretly got up during lunch break and whispered to each other.
"What does it feel like to see me and Mochizuki Haruka going to and from school together?"
“I’ve never had such an experience before, I’ve never even been to your house,” she said, her eyes glistening with tears, as if clouds were gathering around them.
"When you met Tomatsu Tomoka and me in the corridor, what happened when we passed by you?"
My heart is breaking.
"You didn't even glance at me, which is one thing, but Yuka greeted me and smiled at me."
Yamami Maki's tone was extremely bitter; her pain turned into water droplets, falling one by one from her eyelashes.
Matsueda Jun made no move this time. He watched as the girl's tears soaked the sleeves of her school uniform, turning the warm brown-yellow color into a deep black.
"You just can't let me go, can you?"
Yamami Maki didn't speak; her eyes blinked rapidly, and large tears fell freely.
"Senior, it's not too late to regret it now."
Upon hearing this, the girl immediately sat up, as if she had lost all her strength, and clung to the boy's upper body, then hugged him tightly.
Matsueda Jun turned around in his senior's arms, the girl's chin close to his ear, her hot, wet breath, tinged with tears, ruffled the fine downy hairs on the boy's temples, and the unique scent of Yamami Maki lingered around his neck.
The girl kissed him hard, the heat flowing up her body and into Jun Matsueda. The senior adjusted her position and sat on the boy's lap. She was still wearing her coat, but the full and soft touch had already filled his chest.
As their hot breaths brushed against each other's cheeks, Jun Matsue could no longer escape the sweet touch on his lips, but he was still pondering a question in his mind.
Did the senior student regret it?
