Chapter 5 The Excuse of Taking the Initiative
Chapter 5 The Excuse of Taking the Initiative
Haneda High School is located on the border of Mitaka City and Suginami Ward. When Jun Matsueda was in China, he only thought of Shibuya and Minato Ward when he mentioned Tokyo. In fact, Tokyo has 23 cities in addition to its 26 special wards. Mitaka City isn't particularly well-known, but in Matsueda's eyes, it's a nice place, home to the Ghibli Museum and the place where Dazai Osamu once lived.
Jun Matsueda's rented house was several kilometers from school, so he usually rode his bike to school. Today was no exception. He rode through two traffic lights, turned left at the intersection ahead, and saw the gates of Yugaoka High School.
Haneda High School is a magical school. It is clearly located in Mitaka City, but if you search its address, it will show [Kugayama 1-chome, Suginami-ku, Tokyo], which means it has already stepped half a foot into Suginami-ku.
Matsueda Jun got off the car at the school gate with a dashing gesture. The discipline committee member who was checking the appearance stopped to look at him. Matsueda Jun said good morning to her and pushed the car inside.
The sophomore disciplinary committee member poked the back of the freshman next to her and said, "Benxia-chan, who's that boy on the bike? I really want to meet him!"
"Are you the type who doesn't read forums? Jun Matsueda from Class 2, Grade 1, but don't even think about it, Senior."
"He was just seen yesterday with first-year students Haruka Mochizuki and Tomoka Tomatsu after school. You don't even have the qualifications to be on the track."
Inami Fumika, a first-year student, speaks like a third-year senior.
"Wow, Wenxia-chan, stop scolding me..."
The two discipline committee members quietly raised the standards for today's inspection.
Before entering the classroom, Jun Matsueda met Haruka Mochizuki in the corridor. Today, her black hair was scattered on her chest, and she looked very ladylike.
"Good morning, Mochizuki-san."
Mochizuki Haruka waited for him to finish greeting her before nodding, calling out "Matsueda", and walking into the classroom next door.
"Wangyue - you already know him? You're so fast!" The girls cheered in the classroom.
Jun Matsueda walked into his class, greeting everyone along the way, and sat down. The seat to his left was still empty. He thought for a moment and asked Mizushima Miya, who was sitting to his right, "Is Tomatsu-san not here yet?"
Mizushima Miya shook her head, her high ponytail swaying.
Jun Matsueda didn't ask any more questions and prepared the textbooks for class.
Instead, Mizushima Miya turned to him and said, "If Matsueda-san is interested in Tomoka, please forgive her immediately. Although she didn't tell me what happened, she asked several girls last night how to calm a boy down."
Matsueda Jun did not deny it, but asked with interest: "How did you answer her?"
The girl's expression remained unchanged. As soon as she opened her mouth, Tomatsu Tomoka hurried into the classroom.
"I'm almost late, sorry."
Tomatsu Tomoka had just sat down when the bell rang. Matsueda Jun and Mizushima Miya stopped talking. The teacher walked into the classroom and began his lecture.
After a few minutes, a note came from the right.
Matsueda Jun opened it and saw the words: "There's nothing I can do against Matsueda-san."
He glanced at Tomatsu Yuka, who was sitting on his left. He could see the faint dark circles under her eyes. The girl noticed his gaze and forced a smile.
The first class was Chinese, taught by a bearded older man, and they were talking about foreign literature. He quickly started writing and drawing in his notebook:
1. How to deal with Tomatsuyouhua?
2. How to solve the system?
3. What are your plans for high school?
The first question stumped Jun Matsueda. He could pretend to forgive her and become friends again, which was easy. But if Tomatsu Tomoka wanted to become an indelible shadow in his heart, or even go further, Jun Matsueda asked himself and found it difficult to forgive her.
The point is, why should I wrong myself to forgive you? It's obvious that not forgiving you is the most satisfying thing to do.
"Matsueda Jun, read the next poem." His absent-mindedness was discovered.
He stood up and looked around secretly. Mizushima Miya was reading a book with his head down and did not react.
Tomatsu Tomoka turned slightly sideways and pointed at a place in the book with a pen.
Jun Matsueda picked up the textbook.
"May is drawing to a close, and the sun is shining brightly for days on end."
"The trees are shady all the way, and we stay there until dusk"
Jun Matsueda's voice was clear and melodious, carrying with it a wave of memories. The classroom, which had been filled with a little chatter, fell silent, with only the sound of the air conditioner.
"Red-breasted birds chirping on the power lines"
"The sky gradually darkened"
“That was slowly, very slowly.”
He walked in the May evening, his voice soft and slow. "A white house nestled among green leaves, the setting sun illuminating its glass."
"The lawn is soaked and still being sprinkled"
"Blue and purple irises are a dream"
It was still daytime outside the window, but the sunlight in the classroom had dimmed.
"Let's all go down in secret, go down in secret"
“Clear, kind, and tactful”
“I don’t know what to forgive, but I truly feel that everything in the world can be forgiven.”
The classroom was shrouded in a silent atmosphere, with relief, sighs, and a hint of bitterness and sweetness in the heart.
"You read very well. Don't get distracted next time." The middle-aged teacher chose to let him off the hook.
Jun Matsueda sat down and saw Tomatsu Tomoka putting her hands in front of her and clapping silently.
He looked down at the words "Mu Xin" on the book. He didn't need to forgive, but this could be an excuse to take the initiative.
The four classes in the morning were all taught by middle-aged men, leaving no impression on the boys. Soon it was lunch break.
Matsueda Jun returned the lunch box that Tomatsu Yuka had left at his apartment and asked, "Do you want to have lunch with me, Tomatsu-san?"
Mizushima Miya sat at her seat and ate her bento, swallowing her inner surprise along with the rice into her stomach.
Jun Matsueda never invited anyone to dinner.
Tomatsu Tomoka followed Matsueda Jun out the back door and passed by Mizushima Miya's seat. She patted Tomatsu Tomoka's hand and whispered, "Tomoka, keep going."
The girl walked out the door without looking back. When she turned around, she waved to Mizushima Miya to show that she received it.
In the classroom next door, Mochizuki Haruka was surrounded by her friends. She watched the two people pass by the window and put away her smile.
Jun Matsueda asked Tomatsu Tomoka to go to the rooftop first, and he would follow.
Tomatsu Tomoka slowly opened the iron gate, and the hot wind with the chirping of cicadas blew in her face. She found a shady place, put her handkerchief under her and sat down.
Alone, listening to the noisy chirping of cicadas and watching the contrails, the joy of being invited disappeared and uneasiness gradually spread. She put the lunch box on the ground and hugged her knees.
Tomatsu Tomoka hates waiting. For the past 17 years, waiting has never brought good results. On the day her family of three was torn apart, she sat on her bed in the same way, waiting for the quarrels and insults outside the room to die down, and ultimately, she waited for destruction.
There's always something terrible waiting for me... She buried her face in her knees.
"There's a long line at the convenience store." Someone finally showed up. "Sorry, I didn't expect the rooftop to be so hot."
Jun Matsueda held the bag in one hand and fanned himself with the other.
"That's why no one goes to the rooftop, it's very quiet. The summer sky also makes people feel comfortable." Tomatsu Tomoka raised her head, patted the shadow beside her, and motioned Matsueda Jun to sit down.
Without hesitation, Jun Matsueda sat beside her and took out bread and milk from the bag.
"Why didn't Jun-kun bring his lunch box?" Tomatsu Tomoka had wanted to ask this question for a long time.
"Because I don't like cold food, and I don't like stale food."
Tomatsu Tomoka turned her head to the side, and the ends of her long hair fell on Matsueda Jun's right hand, feeling itchy.
If it's you, I'm willing to wait until you feel that everything in the world can be forgiven.
After lunch, Tomatsu Tomoka took a cup of water to the bathroom to rinse her mouth, while Matsueda Jun leaned on the railing and drank milk.
The girl returned to the rooftop, walked over to him, and without saying a word, they looked at the scenery together.
"Tomatsu-san, tell me about the system."
Taking advantage of the girl's sensitive and fragile mind, he wanted to get all the information he wanted to know.
When he heard the word "system", Tomatsu Tomoka's overwhelmed heart trembled again.
