Chapter 53 The Royal Army Has Arrived!
Just as Lou Xiang and his companion were huddled in a corner watching the show, Lü Ming heard a soft, faint sound of something landing not far away.
If Lü Ming hadn't injured his ears today, making them exceptionally sensitive, he wouldn't have been able to hear the sound.
He frowned, nudged Lou Xiang beside him with his elbow, and whispered:
"Hey, did you hear that sound?"
Lou Xiang, who was lying down watching the show, replied impatiently:
"Did you fucking poke your ears? What kind of sound is that?"
"The shouts of battle ahead are deafening, and the city gates are being pounded on. What other sounds can you possibly hear?"
Before they could finish speaking, a cold wind suddenly swept over them from behind. The two felt a chill on the back of their necks and before they could react, they were firmly pressed down by a strong force.
Immediately afterwards, the cold steel blade pressed against his throat, and a deep, threatening voice came from behind his ear:
"Don't move, or you'll die!"
The two men's hair stood on end instantly, and cold sweat poured down their foreheads.
Lou Xiang's Adam's apple bobbed, and he stammered out a sentence:
"Let's talk this out, we're willing to surrender!"
The man behind him was Jiang Han, who held Lou Xiang down tightly, his tone icy:
"Since you are willing to surrender, I may consider sparing your life!"
"Now confess honestly, the composition of the garrison on the city wall, their exact number, and their deployment!"
"If there's any mistake, I'll kill you first!"
Lu Ming was so frightened he almost lost his soul, and he stammered as he spoke:
“Good sir, we are a mixed force, totaling more than 2,100 men. The city garrison has more than 1,800 men, and the Wangzhuang garrison has 300 men.”
"I'm not too sure about the specific deployment, but I know there are at least several hundred people on the city wall, and the rest are probably blocking the city gate right now."
Jiang Han's eyes flashed, and he pointed to the indistinct corner tower ahead, asking:
"How many people are in there? Do they have firearms? Spears? Shields?"
Lu Ming swallowed hard and said in a trembling voice:
"There were about thirty or forty men. Apart from their swords, the rest of them carried longbows and some guns."
"The spears, swords, and shields are all left in the watchtowers at the city gate. Our job here is to keep watch and fire arrows from a distance."
Jiang Han nodded after hearing this, and then ordered his personal guards in the back row to escort the two people to the very back of the line.
He was thinking to himself that he had to clear out the enemies in the corner tower first.
However, the corner tower in front of them was not easy to attack. There were braziers all around for lighting, so it would be impossible to use the cover of night.
Fortunately, the soldiers on the corner tower weren't paying attention to this at all; their attention was completely drawn to the fierce battle in the distance.
Only two sentries remained outside, and those two were slacking off, lying on the city wall watching the battle at the city gate with great interest, as if they were watching a grand show.
Jiang Han and Hei Zi exchanged a glance, understanding each other perfectly. They each led four or five people, crouching low on either side, and stealthily crept over.
Taking advantage of the sentry's momentary lapse in concentration, Jiang Han suddenly leaped out from behind, covering the man's mouth tightly with his left hand, and stabbing him in the throat with his right hand. The strike was swift and ruthless, and the sentry collapsed to the ground without even uttering a sound.
Blackie's side was equally ruthless; with a swift stroke, another sentry met his end in the blink of an eye.
These two men were watching a play when someone sneaked up behind them and slit their throats without them even making a sound.
After taking care of the sentry post, Jiang Han tiptoed down to the bottom of the corner tower steps and peeked inside.
In the main hall on the first floor, about twenty guards were leaning against the window sill, pointing at the battle in the distance and commenting on it, looking quite relaxed.
One of the guards clicked his tongue in amazement:
"I don't know where these bandits came from. They're so resilient, braving the rain of arrows and falling rocks as they rammed the door. They're not like ordinary bandits."
Another guard chimed in:
"You're right. If it were us, we definitely wouldn't be able to withstand it. We'd be riddled with bullets by now."
Strangely, these people neither drew their bows and shot arrows, nor threw stones or fired guns; they just chatted and laughed inside.
Amidst the laughter and conversation, someone timidly asked:
"Hey guys, aren't we going?"
The other person sneered:
"Go to hell! Didn't you see what happened to those two kids, Lü Ming and Lou Xiang, today?"
"If you ask me, we should have killed that bastard surnamed Sun back then, and robbed Wangzhuang while we were at it. What a bully who relies on his master's power..."
Jiang Han was completely confused and wondered to himself:
"Is the job of guarding the city so easy now? With a major battle looming, why are they chatting inside?" But he was too lazy to think too much about it. It was good that they weren't on guard, so he stepped forward, kicked open the wooden door, and led his men inside.
The guards inside were stunned by this sudden turn of events and stood there dumbfounded.
But Jiang Han was not going to be polite; he had to kill all the guards as quickly as possible.
He drew his knife and slashed; the blade flashed, and several people died on the spot in an instant.
Just as the steel blade was about to strike his head, one of the guards fell to his knees with a thud, begging for mercy:
"Hero, spare our lives! We are willing to surrender!"
Jiang Han was stunned, and the goose feather knife in his hand stopped abruptly in mid-air.
Hearing the commotion, the guards upstairs prepared to come down to investigate, but as soon as they poked their heads out, they saw a group of thieves wreaking havoc on the first floor.
He was so frightened that he dropped his longbow and ran to beat the drum.
As a result, Hei Zi, who was quick-witted and agile, spotted him and led his men to rush up to the second floor, where he slashed Hei Zi to the ground with a single blow.
Upon seeing someone being killed, the guards on the second floor panicked, throwing down their weapons and kneeling to beg for mercy.
Jiang Han was puzzled; he had never seen someone surrender so readily. So he removed his helmet and asked in a deep voice:
"Which garrison are you from? Since you're willing to surrender, then take your swords and charge to the front!"
Upon hearing this, one of them immediately retorted:
"Your Majesty, we are border troops, not garrison troops. We must not be confused with them!"
Jiang Han chuckled upon hearing this:
"You dare call yourselves border troops? You've already given up before even fighting?"
The man was about to explain, but Jiang Han quickly waved his hand, interrupting him:
"Alright, alright, I don't care if you're a border soldier or a garrison soldier, now pick up your swords and take Wangzhuang for me!"
"If you capture it, I'll provide you with three meals a day! I'm a border soldier too, and I keep my word!"
Lu Ming, who was at the back of the line, was quick-witted. When he heard the words "border army" and "three meals a day," he was startled. Why did it sound so familiar? Could it be...?
Lu Ming struggled for a moment, then tentatively asked in a loud voice:
"Is the general Jiang Han from Yansui?"
Hearing the question from behind, Jiang Han was somewhat surprised and turned to look at Lü Ming:
"You know me?"
Lu Ming's voice trembled with excitement:
"Is it really you? Who doesn't know your name!"
"Now the border troops in northern Shaanxi are spreading the word that you rebelled on your way to defend the emperor and even killed General Wu, who was leading the army!"
"General! This is a case of the flood washing away the Dragon King's temple!"
"We are from the Jingbian Camp. Last time, someone from your camp even came to persuade us to surrender!"
Lu Ming looked Jiang Han up and down, somewhat surprised:
"But I heard that a dark-skinned man is coming, while the general doesn't look dark at all!"
Upon hearing this, Hei Zi took off his helmet and said in a deep voice:
"It was me! I was the one who went to your Jingbian camp back then!"
Lou Xiang took a closer look at the black piece and was overjoyed:
"Is it really you?"
He turned to look at the other guards, his voice trembling with excitement:
"Brothers, the royal army is here!"
