Warhammer 40: Doom
Chapter 142 The absurd truth
Chapter 142 The absurd truth
Makado's smile was somewhat mocking, and his eyes gleamed with excitement, as if revealing his old friend's shameful secrets brought him immense pleasure.
They were best friends and closest companions—which is why Makado especially enjoyed teasing his old friend about his shortcomings.
There was no chance.
With Doom present, and someone of equal status beside them, they naturally had to give their old friend a good scathing rebuke.
"Before the Great Expedition began," he said slowly, "the Emperor had used existing benchmarks to predict the overall direction, but discovered resistance from the Salz system."
"There exists a conscious world there, coexisting with the planet's creatures, sheltering the lizard's soul, right?"
Makado asked Doom with a smile, while also revealing that the two of them already knew the specifics of the Salz system.
A world of conscious existence, symbiotic souls and the same spiritual power, where dead souls return to the world.
Doom's expression darkened. The two men in front of him clearly knew everything, but were only willing to reveal a few words.
He couldn't help but recall the scene he faced at the time, and the choice he made:
"I initially thought it was a political necessity and didn't think too much about it. Faced with a race that has no orbital defense capabilities, we chose orbital airdrop."
"You almost caused the deaths of a large number of soldiers."
"Don't rush, let me finish before drawing conclusions." Makado nodded in deep agreement, slowly stopping Doom from delving deeper into the matter:
"We already know the outcome of the war, and we have faith in your choice. Please let me finish speaking."
Doom let out a long breath, suppressing his irritation, and listened to Makado explain the reason.
Macado glanced at the Emperor; his old friend was now expressionless, like a prisoner awaiting judgment.
"The Emperor's consciousness crossed the sea of stars, descended upon that world, and spoke with its consciousness."
The elder's words startled Doom, and his gaze naturally turned to the Emperor, who was leaning back in his chair, looking up at the ceiling.
"The Emperor believes that the world of Salz should accept humans, form a soul bond with them, and protect the souls of the dead."
"Heh, what a pity." Makado's tone was meaningful; at first glance it seemed sarcastic, but upon closer inspection it revealed a hint of regret.
"Someone was harshly rejected, and the meeting ended badly."
Doom nodded repeatedly, and after this explanation, he understood the "grudges and affections" between the Emperor and Salz.
He understood the regret in Macardo's tone.
If humans could take over Salzburg and their souls were bound to the world, it would indeed be a wonderful thing.
The people born there, after death, have their souls returned to the world, where they can enjoy peace and are no longer polluted by the subspace.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned; the world's will did not recognize humanity.
"It has the ability to protect the souls of humans in several star sectors, yet it is unwilling to make any changes!"
The emperor straightened his body, a look of regret appearing on his dark brown face.
"I intend to spare its life and have a proper talk someday to strive for harmonious coexistence between the two sides."
His face suddenly darkened, and his usually calm and composed voice abruptly changed, becoming as chilling as a cold wind:
"It incites sand lizards to attack the human world and plunder human resources; it must die!"
"So you sent me to kill it?" Doom tilted his head and asked the Emperor. "Then why didn't you explain it clearly? I won't make excuses."
"Uh..." The emperor fell silent, his lips twitching slightly as he tried to maintain his expressionless and dignified demeanor.
Doom looked at him suspiciously, thinking he had some unspeakable secret, and sat up straight to listen attentively.
"I told him long ago that I would be honest with you."
Makado's lips curled into a smirk, a mocking smile inappropriate for his age: "But he said he wanted to surprise you."
"A surprise?" Doom shook his head at the Emperor's embarrassed face. "This isn't a surprise, it's a shock."
“I understand!” Doom suddenly realized a possibility, then squinted and asked the Emperor, “Is this some kind of interaction? Like Ruth’s?”
The latter nodded weakly, covering his mouth with his hand, trying to hide his embarrassment after his thoughts were exposed.
Doom rose and looked at the silent emperor.
You can definitely sense that the emperor wants to be closer to you; he's trying to build a relationship.
"Frankness and openness are the most genuine emotions between us, and also the bridge for communication."
Doom was helpless; the result was too absurd and difficult for him to accept.
"I'm going back to Nur and conquer the surrounding world. Contact me when you need help."
"Take your offspring and leave," the Emperor nodded to Doom. "With more and more worlds being conquered, the success rate of the test subjects is greatly increased."
Speaking of this, since entering the solar system, Doom has gained dozens of new senses.
He was secretly delighted; every bit of increase in power against the demons would provide an extra boost. Including the original warriors, the legion now numbered 200.
The Emperor has invested heavily, and the results are equally evident; the legion is growing stronger.
"What is the success rate?" Doom asked Makado, the founder of the Imperial Ministry of the Interior and the person in charge of internal affairs.
He had long known that the success rate was low, but he had never asked for the exact figure.
“You don’t need to know.” Makado said seriously, shaking his head to refuse to answer Doom, then noticed a slight change in Doom’s expression.
The aged voice quickly added, "You don't need to worry, it's within your tolerance range."
Doom didn't press further, knowing the difficulties involved: "Hopefully, in the end, the returns on these investments will benefit humanity."
Combating chaos is the foundation of cooperation between the two sides.
Until a better solution is found, these sacrifices and investments are the only way to make a difference.
As long as chaos persists, humanity will never have peace, whether in life or after death.
"You need to go to the underground laboratory to extract new genetic material and cultivate gene seeds."
The Emperor raised his dark eyes and said to Doom, who was about to leave, "After you leave, it is unknown how long it will be before you return. We must ensure a sufficient supply of gene seeds."
“I know.” Doom nodded in agreement, then turned to Macado and said with a touch of respect, “Elder, let’s talk another day.”
Doom held this elder, who appeared very old but was actually an immortal, in relatively high regard.
He was more composed in his actions and words than the emperor.
“Let’s talk another day.” Macardo smiled back and nodded to Doom, showing how much he valued this Primarch.
Doom greeted the Emperor, then left the office and headed to the gene laboratory.
“I’ve said it before: being more honest with him makes it easier to get along.”
Makado watched Doom leave, then turned to face the Emperor, his smile utterly heartless.
"What kind of honesty?" The emperor shook his head helplessly: "Tell him where you're going, who you're killing, and what race you're exterminating."
"This is too direct, even barbaric."
“Perhaps that’s it,” Macardo nodded, his eyes wide, in agreement: “Direct, simple, precise, and brutal.”
"He is the king of warriors, a synonym for violence, and destruction is his innate instinct."
Macardo felt that the Emperor was right; all he needed to do with Doom was tell him what to do.
That is a king with full self-awareness, who knows what to do now and what the future holds.
The purpose is clear, and the understanding is clear.
Once you've identified your goal, use every means and method to move towards it.
Doom's primary goal is Chaos, which is his starting point; his secondary goal is the Great Crusade, to help the Emperor redeem humanity.
Based on these two points, he will not hesitate to offer help.
"I've done too much useless work..." The emperor sighed helplessly, his shoulders slumping somewhat dejectedly.
“Not entirely.” Macado looked at him intently, at his old friend.
"At least you let him know that you care about your relationship with him and are willing to put in the effort to maintain it."
The emperor shook his head, his black hair at his temples swaying as he quickly recovered from his disappointment: "Let's leave him alone for now."
He exhaled a breath of golden spiritual energy, which took shape in the void, creating a magnificent galaxy.
"Our progress is a little slow. We need to speed things up and continue to send out reconnaissance ships to retrieve more Gene Primarchs."
"The Empire must launch a full-scale attack. The troops await their leaders. Only when the Space Marines work together with the Father of Genesis can they unleash their full power."
"I need to leave Terra to continue participating in the Great Crusade and, incidentally, to find the Lost Child."
"Understood." The golden galaxy was reflected in Makado's eyes; it was dazzling, vast, and dangerous, and the Empire's controlled territory comprised only a small portion of it.
"The Ministry of the Interior is fully cooperating to build more warships, urging mechanical trainees to prepare military equipment, and recruiting soldiers to conquer the world."
The Emperor's face was solemn, but when he heard about the Martian Mechanicus, a golden light flashed in his eyes: "Has the Mechanicus behaved itself?"
"They are now in high spirits, and the output of the Mechanicus has increased significantly after they learned that there is a replacement."
"Heh. I should thank Doom? He brought such a big gift upon his return."
"His cooperation in this regard was impeccable, making the Cult of Mechanics feel a sense of crisis, realizing that they are not irreplaceable."
(Brothers, blessings beckon to me! I seem to see the beauty of a garden, a carefree land filled with laughter.)
(That's all for today. If it doesn't work tomorrow, I'll rest and get an injection.)
