Chapter 31 A Visit from the Grey Wizard

Chapter 31 A Visit from the Grey Wizard
The wizard, dressed in a gray robe, holding a rattan staff as tall as his own in one hand and a pipe in the other, arrived at Hobbiton on foot.

The wizard did not go straight to the destination. After entering the town, he first came to the Green Dragon Tavern.

The Hobbit tavern was not very friendly to wizards of different heights, so he could only bend over all the way to the bar and shout to the tavern owner, "Give me a glass of ale, thank you!" Then he sat down on the bench, straightened up and breathed a sigh of relief.

The tavern fell silent for a moment, and all the hobbits looked at him in surprise and curiosity.

The tavern owner was a fat old man. When he saw the wizard, he was stunned for a moment, then shouted in surprise: "Gandalf! When did you come to the Shire?"

The gray-robed wizard smiled and greeted, "Hello, Mr. Barney Ale Barrel. I was traveling and happened to be passing through the Shire, so I came here to rest and catch my breath."

The innkeeper obviously knew Gandalf and handed him a glass of ale. "This one's on me."

"Gandalf, you haven't been to Hobbiton for a long time. It seems like more than ten years ago. Where have you been all these years?"

"Oh, thank you! I've been traveling a lot, and in recent years I've been to the East," Gandalf said simply. He took a sip of wine and then casually asked, "By the way, is there anything new happening in the Shire lately? Can you tell me about it?"

"What's new? That's quite a lot!" The innkeeper was very interested when he mentioned this. "...Gandalf, you don't know that besides you, there is another wizard who came to the Shire recently. But he is much younger than you. He is now in our village, living with Bilbo Baggins!"

Gandalf seemed to be intrigued. "Oh, young wizard? Could you tell me about him?"

The tavern owner seemed to have found the perfect audience, and immediately began to speak nonstop: "The young wizard's name is Duyle. He likes traveling just like you. He traveled once before and made a name for himself. It is said that he helped the residents of Buckland resist the invasion of trees in the old forest, so he also has the title of "Tree Feller"..."

As the innkeeper spoke, the image of Doir gradually took shape in Gandalf's mind. A thought flashed in his deep blue eyes, his expression obscured by the smoke he exhaled.

Meanwhile, back at Bag End, Dewy had been very busy these past few days.

Because the mandrake entered puberty, it began to become moody and taciturn. It even felt uncomfortable living in the pot and once crawled out of the soil and tried to escape.

Fortunately, Dui discovered it in time and used a petrification spell to freeze the mandrake that was almost running out of the yard.

Otherwise, if it really escapes and matures in the wild, it will be fatal!

In order to prevent the two mandrakes from escaping again, Dui simply used Transfiguration to create a small glass greenhouse near Bag End. On the one hand, it was to create a suitable growing environment for them, and on the other hand, it was to prevent them from escaping.

And as the mandrakes mature, their voices become more dangerous.

In order to prevent himself or Bill from getting hurt, he also set up multi-layer glass covers for the two mandrakes to block their sounds as much as possible.

Because of the late spring cold, Dui also had to put socks and scarves on the two pots of mandrake to prevent them from catching cold and getting sick.

The socks and scarf were both knitted from wool by the skillful Bilbo, who spent an entire night knitting them.

It can be said that the mandrake is taken care of as if it were a child.

One afternoon, just as Dewi and Bilbo were having their afternoon tea, there was a knock on the door of Bag End.

The two looked at each other with puzzled expressions. Who would come?

Bilbo put down the biscuits, hurried to the door, and opened it. There stood a tall figure blocking the doorway, his head completely obscured.

Bilbo took a few steps back and tried to look up. Seeing the newcomer, he showed a look of surprise: "Gandalf! Why are you here?"

Dewi, who was drinking tea, heard Bilbo's surprised voice, paused, put down the teacup immediately, turned sideways and looked towards the door.

Standing at the door was the grey-robed wizard Gandalf. He leaned on his cane and bent over, smiling and greeting Bilbo. "Hello, Bilbo. I just happened to be passing through the Shire and thought I'd stop by to rest. Are you welcome?"

"Of course, you're most welcome!" Bilbo said quickly, and then he moved aside to invite him. "Come in, Gandalf, you've arrived just in time. We're having afternoon tea. Welcome to join us!"

"Oh, it seems I have come at the right time," Gandalf said with a happy face.

Bending down and entering Bag End, he handed his hat and cane to Bilbo. He immediately saw Dewy sitting in the living room. His eyes met with Dewy's, and he smiled and said, "It seems that there are guests here besides me."

Dui stood up, took the initiative to walk towards Gandalf, and politely introduced himself: "Hello, Gandalf, it's our first meeting. I am Duiil, and I am very pleased to meet you!"

Gandalf looked up and down at the black-haired, black-eyed young wizard in front of him. His gaze lingered for a moment on his black wizard robes, and he showed a look of surprise. "Are you acquainted with Goldberry, the River Maiden of the Old Forest?"

Dui noticed Gandalf's gaze and realized that he had noticed the blessing of Goldberry on his wizard robe. He smiled and nodded, "Yes, I know Ms. Goldberry and Tom. I was invited to stay at their house for a while before. They are both very friendly and kind people."

After hearing this, Gandalf paid more attention to Dewi.

Although Lady Goldberry and Tom Bombadil do not participate in the disputes in Middle-earth, those who are invited to visit them are generally positive characters.

Not to mention that Dui was wearing a blessed robe woven by Ms. Goldberry with black swan feathers and silver threads. This was not a treatment that ordinary guests could enjoy.

"Okay, come and have afternoon tea together." Bilbo invited the two to sit down together.

The three of them sat in front of the fireplace, enjoying tea and dessert cookies while chatting.

"Gandalf, where have you been all these years?" Bilbo asked curiously.

Gandalf took a biscuit and tasted it before he said slowly, "Oh, I've been traveling in the East for most of these years. I first lived with the elves for a few years, then went to the northern wilderness, and finally stayed in the Misty Mountains for a while before returning to the plains of Eriador."

Hearing Gandalf's words, Bilbo showed a longing look on his face and couldn't help asking: "Gandalf, are the elves as beautiful as the legend says?"

Gandalf looked at Bilbo with a smile in his eyes. He said, "The beauty of the elves cannot be simply summarized in one word. You have to witness it yourself to experience it. If you are curious about them, you can go to the elves' territory. They welcome all friendly people to visit."

Although Bilbo yearned for it, he still shook his head. "I'm just an ordinary hobbit. Going out on adventures is out of my reach. It's too dangerous. Besides, I'll miss breakfast, second meals, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. That's terrible!"

Seeing this, Gandalf stopped trying to persuade him. Instead, he looked at Dui, who hadn't interrupted him, and asked curiously, "Wizard Dui, where are you from? Judging from your hair color and eyes, are you from the Far East?"

Dui shook his head. "No, I haven't been to the East yet. I'm from a very far place. This is my first time in Middle-earth."

Gandalf looked at him deeply when he heard this. His profound wisdom gave him the ability to discern truth from falsehood. He could see that Dewi was not lying, but he was also confused.
